Condition: Very good This exceptional gelatin silver print is by the noted American photographer Jack Welpott (1923-2007) The artwork is initialed and dated in pencil on the mount; signed, titled and dated in ink, his copyright credit stamp on mount verso It is in good condition aside from some uneven toning and a few creases/scuffs on mount. Jack Welpott’s photographs are in the permanent collections of the Getty Museum, Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum, New York; International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, Tucson; University of New Mexico, Albuquerque; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris and the Australian National Gallery among others. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Jack Welpott (1923-2007) was educated at primary and secondary schools in Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana. He learned about photography as a boy by watching his uncle in the darkroom, and began taking pictures by the time he was twelve. After high school he enrolled in college, but was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. He served in the South Pacific as a radio intercept operator until 1946. In 1949, he earned his BS in Economics from the University of Indiana, Bloomington on the G.I. Bill. He then studied photography under Henry Homes Smith, painting under Leon Golub and Harry Engle, and design with George Rickey receiving his MS in Visual Communication in 1955. Welpott then completed his MFA in photography and painting in 1959, getting to know classmates Jerry Uelsmann and Van Deren Coke in the process. During these years, he also became acquainted with Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind, and Minor White. Upon graduation, Welpott was hired by John Gutmann to teach photography in the Art Department at San Francisco State College, now San Francisco State University, where he made extensive contributions to the field of photographic education over the next thirty-three years. In the early 1960s there were few photography courses or graduate programs offered so Welpott pioneered individual courses and a graduate program, and taught one of the first history of photography courses at the college level. Don Worth joined the faculty in 1962, adding color photography to the program, long before color photography was widely accepted as an art medium. Welpott was a beloved instructor and was deeply dedicated to the success of his students. His educational goal was to determine the needs of the student, provide constructive criticism, and most importantly, help them develop their own vision. A number of his students have had successful photographic careers including Judy Dater, Leland Rice, John Spence Weir, Michael Bishop, Harvey Himelfarb, and Catherine Wagner. This will bring the over all condition to excellent. About the artist: Born in 1951 in Dernbach, West Germany, Jurgen Gorg has established himself as a master craftsman and consummate artist. His etchings and lithographs reflect his innate talent and imagination. He studied visual arts first, in Koblenz, Germany and later, at the Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. Gorg began his professional career in 1977 as an artist and printmaker and by 1980, was awarded a special painting prize by the district of Rheinland-Pfalz. In 1985, a catalog raisonne was published of Gorg's creations. Gorg's work follows a strong tradition of figurative art with erotic overtones. He interprets his subject matter loosely, keeping his figures open and emphasizing motion through line and contour. A foreword in a book on Gorg's work captures his artistic sensibility: "The predominant subject is the human body: it is the body of a young, slim, beautiful person. In 1935, at the age of ten, he began to study painting under the instruction of Felice Carena. He was accepted into the Brera Academy (Accademia di Brera) in 1951, and there studied as a draughtsman until 1954 in the studio of Achille Funi. In 1955 he went to Paris, where he met and was influenced by Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam. His first solo exhibition came in 1959 in Milan. In his early career, Adami's works were expressionistic, but by the time of his second exhibition in 1964 at Kassel, he had developed a style of painting reminiscent of French cloisonnism, featuring regions of flat color bordered by black lines. Unlike Gauguin, however, Adami's subjects were highly stylized and often presented in fragments, as seen in Telescoping Rooms (1965). In the 1970s, Adami began to address politics in his art, and incorporated subject matter such as modern European history, literature, philosophy, and mythology. In 1971, he and his brother Gioncarlo created the film Vacances dans le désert. In 1974 he illustrated a Helmut Heissenbuttel poem, Occasional Poem No. 27. It is in very good, never-framed condition with no flaws to note. Jean Marie Haessle was born in Buhl, Haut-Rhin, France. After living for a few years in Paris, he moved to New York City in 1967 where he still works and lives in his studio on Spring Street in Soho. Over the years, he had numerous shows in the US, New York, Miami, Texas and California, France and Italy (see the resume). In the mid-80’s he worked for a period in France (Paris, Lyon, and Cannes). In the late 90’s he worked in Mexico (San Miguel de Allende) where he had a one person show in 1997 in the Museo de Art in Queretaro. He had a survey exhibition of the last 30 years of his work at the Korean University Museum, Seoul, Korea in spring 2014 and a major one person show in the Namu Modern &Contemporary gallery in Seoul in September of the same year. Roland Topor (January 7, 1938 – April 16, 1997), was a French illustrator, painter, writer, filmmaker and actor, known for the surreal nature of his work. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Paris (1955-1964). He publishes his first drawings in the review « Bizarre », his first short stories appear in the review « Fiction » in 1958. His corrosive humor leads him to collaborate with the satirical newspaper « Hari-Kiri » (1961-1965). « Masochists » his first book is edited by Losfeld in 1961. Totally tragic, absurd and grotesque , the humor he disseminates evokes more the one of Central Europe. All his creations from the beginning till the end remain provocative and bizarre. He is mainly known as an illustrator and graphic artist and famous for combining surrealism with black humor. Abram Topor, father of the artist came to settle in Paris in 1930 thanks to a grant from the Warsow Arts Academy. In his young age during the war, he and his family will stay for a while in Savoie trying to escape Nazis. In 1962 he created the Panic Movement (mouvement panique), together with Alejandro Jodorowsky and Fernando Arrabal.
