Antique Hand Carved Gothic Church Panel of Feeding Pelican as Symbol of Christ
Located in Lisse, NL
Stunning religious wall panel in thick relief with strong hook for easy mounting. For the collectors of stunning antique church relics we are also offering this marvelously hand carved pelican sculpture for wall mounting. The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The pelican in Christian art is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity. Many early painters and carvers mistakenly represented it more similar to an eagle (much like in this antique church relic), and not as a natural pelican which is why most people today still are a bit confused at first when this stunning hand carved, symbolic bird is called a pelican. This striking and all hand carved, symbolic panel was originally part of a church or monastery communion rail...

Pair 19th Century Spanish Colonial Brass Slipper Stirrups
Located in Stamford, CT
Pair of 19th century, or earlier, Spanish Colonial brass slipper stirrups. These slipper stirrups, cast in bronze, mimic in metal the shape and decoration of a traditional leather boot. The rope design on the edge copies the sewing of the inside leather lining found on some other examples. The high quality of the metal casting is a direct inheritance of the metalworking skills displayed by Peruvian native populations before Spanish conquest. Introduced to South America by the Spanish in the 16th century, horses soon became an important element in the lives of many local populations, of both colonial and native origin. Because horses were highly valued, owners would dress them with beautiful and elaborate tack, especially during festivals or other celebrations. Closed stirrups, or regular stirrups covered with a leather hood...

Grand Tour Bronze of the Luxor Obelisk, Place de la Concorde, Paris, 1836
Located in Stamford, CT
A Grand Tour bronze model of the Luxor Obelsik, the shaft decorated with hieroglyphics on all four sides. On the pedestal are drawn diagrams explaining the complex machinery that was used for the transportation, and inscribed dedications. Mounted on a polished black and white marble base. Nice size at 16 inches high. The Luxor Obelisk is over 3,000 years old and was originally situated outside of Luxor Temple, where its twin remains to this day. It first arrived in Paris on 21 December 1833, having been shipped from Luxor via Alexandria and Cherbourg, and three years later, on 25 October 1836, was moved to the center of Place de la Concorde by King Louis-Phillipe. It was given to France by Muhammad Ali...
