This work was originally sold by the Stephen Haller Gallery which hosted several critically acclaimed, sell-out shows of New Mexico resident Johniie Winona Ross, whose exquisite Minimalist aesthetic really took hold with collectors. The debt to famous New Mexico resident and Minimalist goddess Agnes Martin is obvious, but Winona Ross has a disctinctive style and technique of his own. The process of creating this work was laborious: Ross typically applies as many as 90-100 layers of paint to each canvas, then scrapes the surface with a straight-edged razor to reveal the many layers (and their chronology), and finally burnishing the surface with a Pueblo pottery stone to achieve a soft gloss.
Maureen Mullarkey of Studio Matters wrote in 2010:
THE LOVELINESS OF JOHNNIE WINONA ROSS' paintings elude translation into either reproduction or verbal description. In 2011, ArtDaily published this announcement from Stephen Haller, publicizing a later exhibition:
"Washington Post critic Stephen Parks characterized Ross’s work in this way: “From a distance his canvases appear to be simple, minimal constructions of horizontal stripes with hints of vertical color in the background. Up close the paintings are seen to be extraordinarily beautiful and complex objects that induce a humming meditative state.”
Ross grounds his work in the inspiration of the desert of the American Southwest, and borrows techniques from ancient Native American sources, melding them with a distinctly sophisticated and utterly contemporary vision. His use of the Native American technique of burnishing pigment and minerals with a potter’s stone to create a hard surface with a visually warm sheen creates an effect reminiscent of the softening of marble steps...

It's quite a dazzling work, combining color field, geometric abstraction with Op Art, as the work changes appearance and color with the reflected and refracted light. - sometimes appearing light; sometimes darker. See the photos -- there's a light one and a darker one - and they both depict the same work. What's so impressive is that this work literally changes color depending on how the light reflects against it. The artist wrote a personal and heartfelt inscription on the verso to "Twig and Laila". (Twig (sic), which the artist deliberately misspells, is Thurston Twigg Smith, former publisher of The Honolulu Advertiser, who was married to New York philanthropist Laila Twigg Smith. Laila had lived in Hawaii since 1970, where she and her husband had put together a substantial collection of contemporary art. Unfortunately, the two divorced in 1996 and soon after she returned to New York. Two years later, in 1998, Laila died of liver failure at the young age of only 53. Laila was a major philanthropist and art collector who moved from Manhattan to Hawaii. Helen Pond and her collaborator-husband Herbert Senn worked together on dozens of set designs. This particular piece was created as a preliminary design for Nancy Leeds' Great Scot! Play of 1965, which focused on Robert Burns' love life.
Pond and Senn were known internationally for their acclaimed set designs for Broadway shows, opera and ballet companies and for the 400 sets the couple designed at The Cape Playhouse in Dennis for 38 seasons.
The pair designed Broadway sets for “What Makes Sammy Run?,” “Roar Like a Dove,” “Oh, Coward,” and the 1982 revival of “Showboat,” and sets for “The Boys from Syracuse,” both for Off-Broadway and the Drury Lane production in London. In addition to the Boston Ballet...
