Chelsea 101 (vintage Chelsea Manhattan photograph)
By Fernando Natalici
Located in NEW YORK, NY
'CHELSEA 101' by noted New York downtown art scene photographer, Fernando Natalici Vintage original sepia toned photo taken in Manhattan's historic Chelsea area in 1979. Artist statement: "As I was riding by 101 West 25th Street, north-side of block, closer to 6th Ave., workers were removing a newer sign that was mounted on top of CHELSEA 101, unaware what was under… They didn’t show much surprise and proceeded to mount the new sign… Seeing that, from my bike, I stopped and got the shot before they covered it up with another sign… CHELSEA 101 remained there until the building was renovated; today, a window into a bygone era of family owned sewing machine shops..." Silver gelatin print, 1979 8.5 x 11 inches (full frame printed to the edges) Hand signed from an edition of 2 A/P's on the reverse Obtained directly from artist. Seller is a primary dealer rep of Natalici. Well-preserved; very good to excellent condition New York based photographer Fernando Natalici is best known for his iconographic documentation of the downtown Manhattan art scene of the mid/late 70's and early 80's. Natalici’s portfolio includes sought after images of a young Patti Smith, Blondie, Talking Heads, Keith Haring, The Ramones and more. As an Art Director, Fernando has played a key role in creating memorable visuals for historic NY venues such as CBGB's, The Mudd Club, Area and Danceteria. Related Categories William Klein. West 28th Street (from the series A Story of the New York Subway)
By Kazuo Sumida
Located in New York, NY
14 x 11 inch gelatin silver print. Edition 15. Signed on verso. Kazuo Sumida first visited New York in 1995. He found the city to be one of “both bustle and silence,” particularly the underground world of the subway, where he encountered “a place full of characters.” By 2002, he had produced a large body of work of images taken in this subterranean metropolis – tender scenes of lovers and children; gritty portraits of beggars for whom the subway is home; artists, musicians, commuters, and others who pass through the tunnels on their daily journeys. The resulting monograph, A Story of the New York Subway, was published in 2002, and this image appeared on the cover. Sumida was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan. Although photography was not his formal career, Sumida has pursued the art throughout his life. He graduated from Osaka Photography Graduate School in 1983, and also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, on a fellowship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He lives in Japan, and continues to visit New York frequently. His work has been shown at the Tokyo Ginza Kodak Photo...

Carroll Shelby/Sebring, FL by Al Satterwhite, 1964, Archival Pigment Print
By Al Satterwhite

Edition of 25 Signed, titled, dated and numbered. Paper size: 20 x 16 in. *Framing not included AVAILABLE SIZES: 11 x 14 in., Edition of 25 16 x 20 in., Edition of 25 "The discovery of fast cars and auto racing rocked my world as a high school student in the early 1960s. After graduating I did everything I could to wrangle assignments to cover two of the biggest international endurance races held annually in Florida. The Daytona 24-Hour and Sebring 12-Hour races were the highlight of my early years as a photographer. Covering racing events in the Sixties was a lot different from what it is today. Access to the racers and the cars was much easier and there were far fewer photographers covering any event. As a fan and a photojournalist in search of a great story, I usually hung around Carroll Shelby’s pit. Shelby and his Cobras were always race winning contenders. “Shel” was easy to work with and to be around. He let me do what I wanted and go where I pleased to capture a story. At the 1964 Sebring race, Shel was recovering from surgery, alternating between crutches and a wheelchair. As his good friend and motor racing artist Bill Neale...

Cafe Neruda
By Steve Schlackman
Located in New York, NY
This digital print is part of a limited edition set. Steve Schlackman is a lawyer by profession and a photographer by choice. Fascinated by the magical world of photography since his youth, he honed this skill over time, meticulously pouring over all things photographic, technical and creative alike, with unstoppable enthusiasm. Steve’s passion for taking photographs was ignited early on, during a study-abroad trip to Paris, where he immersed himself in all things art historical. Diligence, a strong trait Schlackman is known for, paid off, and after daily meanderings at the Louvre, a great love for art emerged along with hundreds of photographs. These pictures proved to be early tributes to the urban landscape, and although they didn’t amount to full-on series, a seed was planted. The omnipresent tension between the poor neighborhoods of the Cuban capital, as a result of political dictatorship, and the rich Afro-Cuban cultural roots of their inhabitants, whose wealth is represented by their music and feelings, is physically visible in Steve’s use of high contrast, a metaphoric touch on the subject of the light and darkness of the Afro-Cuban heritage. Although intentionally apolitical, the pictures speak volumes about the Cuban status quo and, appropriately, the eternal joy of living despite socio-political hardship. Play, in and of itself a mode to survive the harsh reality, represents another subject Steve is keen on capturing. Whether it is adults playing dominoes...

Smoke Stacks Variation
By Tom Baril
Located in New York, NY
Photogravure from the Tom Baril 'Manhattan' Portfolio. Edition of 75, signed by the artist on bottom right. Framing: acid free, archival framed, cotton rag mat. Glazing: Optium museum plexi. A graduate of New York’s School of Visual Arts, Tom Baril spent over fifteen years as Robert Mapplethorpe’s master printer. His subjects include urban architecture, seascapes and meticulously detailed botanical and nature photographs. Baril’s work demonstrates a command of technique that results from his extensive experience as a master printer. Baril developed a unique toning process that enriches the color and opulence of his photographs. Tom Baril is inspired by the nature studies of modernist photographers such as Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham and Karl Blossfeldt. A similar attentiveness to the clarity of line, form, pattern and texture characterizes Baril’s still lifes. In composing the seascapes, Baril employs the traditional box camera obscura, better known as the pinhole camera...
