Venice Biennale: XLIV Esposizione Internazionale D arte (Hand signed by Kapoor)
By Anish Kapoor
Located in New York, NY
Rare collectors' item: Anish Kapoor Venice Biennale: XLIV Esposizione Internazionale D'arte Biennale Di Venezia (Hand signed and inscribed by Anish Kapoor), 1990 HISTORIC signed poster published on the occasion of Kapoor representing Great Britain at the Venice Biennale Offset lithograph poster (Hand signed, inscribed to Nadine and dated 2016) Boldly signed, inscribed and dated by Anish Kapoor on the lower right front 33 × 23 inches Unframed Boldly signed and inscribed by Anish Kapoor on the lower right front for the present owner, Nadine, so provenance is direct. Accompanied by gallery issued Certificate of Guarantee This offset lithograph poster was published on the occasion of Anish Kapoor's exhibition "XLIV Esposizione Internazionale D'Arte" at the Biennale Di Venezia from May 27 to September 30, 1990. Hand signed posters by Kapoor are quite elusive. The poster is two sided as it was published on the occasion of the artist's participation in the 1990 Venice Biennale (the verso has his lengthy biography), and it bears the original folds as issued. British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor was chosen to represent Britain at the first Biennale of the 1990s. He had been exhibiting since 1980 but it was this show that brought him widespread recognition on the international stage. Sixteen huge sandstone blocks dominated the Pavilion’s main room; they were so heavy that the floor had to be reinforced with supports. Kapoor had started working in stone in the late 1980s and each block in Void Field (1989) has a hole filled with another motif in his work, the powdered blue pigment used in Indian religious ceremonies. The same vibrant tones, which was also inspired also by Yves Klein’s statement bold blue colour, were used in his low-lying slate sculpture, A Wing at the Heart of Things (1990), in the back gallery of the Pavilion; this work is now part of Tate’s collection. “Venice is an interchange of East and West, reflecting the way Kapoor borrows from both cultures” said Henry Meyric Hughes, British Council. Kapoor’s exhibition also wove together references to spiritualism and eroticism, with the red slit in the Pavilion's wall, entitled The Healing of St. Thomas (1989), alluding to the saint that doubted Jesus’ resurrection...

FLAG SERIES 1980 Signed Lithograph Colorful Flag Collage Madagascar Stamp, Birds
By Chaim Gross
Located in Union City, NJ
FLAG SERIES 1980 is a brightly colored lithograph by the American artist/sculptor Chaim Gross printed in 10 colors on archival Arches printmaking paper. FLAG SERIES 1980 depicts a bold graphic image comprised of colorful flag segments intermixed to form a varied bird-shaped designs. Chaim Gross' FLAG SERIES was specially commissioned by The World Federation of UN Associations (WFUNA) in 1980 as a limited edition lithograph for the UN stamp issue. Lithograph is hand signed in pencil by the artist Chaim Gross and numbered 166/1500. Postal Stamp and First Day cancel on lower left. Print size - 11.0" x 8.5" unframed, fresh, vivid colors, very good condition. Chaim Gross,(1904 - 1991) was a sculptor, artist, and teacher, known for his wood carvings, sculptures of moving human figures, religious imagery, acrobats, mothers and children. Chaim was born on March 17, 1904 to a Jewish family in Austrian Galicia, in the village of Wolowa in the Carpathian Mountains. In 1911, his family moved to Kolomyia. During World War I, Russian forces invaded Austria-Hungary; amidst the turmoil, the Grosses fled Kolomyia. They returned when Austria retook the town in 1915, refugees of the war. When World War I ended, Gross and brother Avrom-Leib went to Budapest, where Gross attended the city's art academy and studied with painter Béla Uitz, though within a year a new regime under Miklos Horthy took over and attempted to expel all Jews and foreigners from the country. After being deported from Hungary, Gross began art studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna shortly before emigrating to New York City in 1921. In the U.S., Gross's studies continued at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, where he studied sculpture with Elie Nadelman and others, and at the Art Students League, with sculptor Robert Laurent. He also attended the Educational Alliance Art School, studying under Abbo Ostrowsky. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Gross exhibited at the Salons of America exhibitions at the Anderson Galleries and, beginning in 1928, at the Whitney Studio Club (the precursor to the Whitney Museum of American Art). In March 1932 Gross had his first solo exhibition at Gallery 144 in New York City. Also in 1932, Gross married Renee Nechin (1909-2005), and they had two children, Yehuda and Mimi (Mimi Gross is a New York-based artist, and was married to the artist Red Grooms from 1963-1976). In 1933, Gross joined the government's PWAP (Public Works of Art Project), which transitioned into the WPA (Works Progress Administration). Under these programs Gross taught and demonstrated art, made sculptures for schools and public colleges, and created works for Federal buildings including the Federal Trade Commission Building, and for the France Overseas and Finnish Buildings at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Gross was also recognized during these years with a silver medal at the 1937 Exposition universelle in Paris. Chaim Gross, Sculptor by Josef Vincent Lombardo, the first major book on Gross, came out in 1949 and included a catalogue raisonne of his sculpture. In the 1950s Gross began to make more...

Highly collectible. Makes an excellent gift. Published by the Generali Foundation, Austria on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition. About the exhibition: Hans Haacke (born in 1936 in Cologne, GER, has lived in New York, USA, since 1965) focused on "a single problem area: how the country deals with its history and national identity. More than I care for, these questions stir up emotions both in Austria and Germany." Haacke had been originally concerned with physical and biological systems. Very early on, his artistic practice also included the analysis of and reflection on socio-political phenomena. Haacke's work deals with social and political themes. He considers the debates arising from his works - fierce at times - to be an integral part of them. "Mia san mia" (We Are Who We Are...

Courtesy of Susan Inglett Galery ABOUT CECIL TAYLOR Cecil Taylor (b. 1929) is a towering, sometimes divisive figure within twentieth-century music. In the early 1960s, with fellow maverick artists Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and others, he revolutionized jazz by extending bebop into a radical terrain dubbed the "New Thing" or "free jazz"—the latter a term with political as well as aesthetic connotations given the social changes underway at the time in America. For Taylor, freedom meant a deep synthesis of the modern composers such as Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky that he encountered during his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music with the nuanced and original piano innovations of Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver, Bud Powell...

Alexander Liberman book, hand signed by both Alexander Liberman and Barbara Rose
By Alexander Liberman
Located in New York, NY
Alexander Liberman, hand signed and inscribed by both Alexander Liberman and Barbara Rose, and accompanied by a separate hand signed note, 1981 Hardback monograph (hand signed and inscribed by Alexander Liberman as well as art historian Barbara Rose), plus accompanied by a separate handwritten card signed by Liberman in the original envelope Warmly signed and inscribed on the monograph and card by Alexander Liberman and hand signed by Barbara Rose on the first front end page 13 1/4 × 12 1/4 × 1 3/4 inches A unique and memorable gift for any collector or fan of the sculptor Alexander Liberman! This lavishly illustrated hardback monograph with dust jacket is warmly signed and inscribed on the first front end page by both Alexander Liberman and the author, art historian, Barbara Rose, and it is accompanied by a separate handwritten card, signed by Alexander Liberman and held in the original envelope. (see photos). The book and card was inscribed to Jack Haber, the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine Gentlemen's Quarterly (GQ) from 1969 to 1983. GQ was owned by Conde Nast, and Alexander Liberman, who worked for Conde Nast for 32 years, was the Editorial Director from 1962-1983. Sadly, Jack Haber would die in 1984 at the age of 45 - one of the first casualties of the AIDS crisis, which was devastating to the art and publishing industries. Inscription on the monograph reads: To Jack Haber with warm friendship Alexander Liberman Inscription on the card reads: Dear Jack [Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year] with warm friendship Alex Book information: Publisher: Abbeville Press, 1981. Hardcover. Bound in publisher's original white cloth with spine and front cover stamped in black. Full color illustrations throughout, including several color foldouts. 392 pages. About Alexander Liberman: Considered a revolutionary Minimalist artist, Alexander Liberman produced works that predated the movement by more than a decade. Liberman, not wanting to limit himself to any one form of expression, worked to produce radically minimalist paintings and sculpture in order to illuminate his beliefs about celestial motion, the movement of the eye, as well as human sexuality. The artist’s fascination with American industrialization and modernization ultimately resulted in his widely known red steel sculptures and geometric paintings, which seem to decompose the turbulence of the time period. Alexander Liberman was born in 1912 in Kiev, Russia. He studied first in London and then in Paris. He took courses in philosophy and mathematics at the Sorbonne and architecture at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Liberman has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums such as the Jewish Museum, New York (1966); Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY (1970); and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1970). His sculpture and paintings are included in the museum collections of the Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Tate Gallery, London and many others. Additionally his public sculpture can be seen in over 40 cities around the world including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Haven, New York, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. Alexander Liberman died in November of 1999 at the age of 87. - Courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nass About Barbara Rose: Barbara Ellen Rose (June 11, 1936 – December 25, 2020) was an American art historian, art critic, curator and college professor. Rose's criticism focused on 20th-century American art, particularly minimalism and abstract expressionism, as well as Spanish art. "ABC Art...

Untitled, from the Long Point Gallery Portfolio
Located in New York, NY
Nora Speyer Untitled, from the Long Point Gallery Portfolio, 1988 Lithograph on paper with deckled edges Hand signed, numbered 22/30 and dated on lower front 22 × 15 inches Unframed Hand signed, numbered 22/30 and dated on lower front Publisher: Long Point Gallery, Inc., Provincetown, Massachusetts; Printer: Bruce Porter from Trestle Editions Limited, New York Rarely to market, this stunning 1988 woodcut was created by Nora Speyer as part of a portfolio produced for sale by Long Point Gallery, an artist's cooperative in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Long Point Portfolio. This will be the first time the work will be removed from the portfolio. It is hand signed and numbered from a very small edition of only 30; it is in fine condition, unframed and never framed, and housed in the original portfolio box, with the original colophon page, which also included works by 11 other artists. For reference and provenance we have included an image of the colophon page from the complete portfolio. About Nora Speyer: The most exciting place to me is where I can communicate with the greatest number of artists. I can't live without some artists around. I'm not saying artists are likable. They can be very objectionable, but they are still my world. Nora Speyer Born in Pittsburgh, Speyer enrolled at Temple University's Tyler School of Art when she was sixteen. It was there she became roommates with Lillian Lent...
