A fantastic rural farmyard scene featuring horses, pigs, goats, chickens, ducks and cattle by John Frederick Herring Jnr. In the foreground, pigs, goats and chickens are shown foraging for food whilst horses watch on. To the right, a bay horse drinks from a pond next to some ducks as cattle graze outside a barn. In the distance two figures can be seen walking along a country path towards a church.
John Frederick Herring was born in Doncaster c1820 to the artist John Frederick Herring (1795-1865) and his wife Anna Catharina (nee Harris) and was baptised on 2 May, 1821. There is some confusion about the date of his birth due to an earlier birth record existing for 21 June, 1815. To complicate matters further, all of the census records indicate he was born in 1816. Some sources suggest this was an earlier child who died and that Herring was the child born in 1820.
Herring’s brothers Charles Herring (1828-1856) and Benjamin Herring (1830-1871) also became artists. He and his brothers were exposed to art at an early age and were all tutored by their father whose subject matter influenced their work. The family moved to Newmarket during the early 1830’s and Herring would visit the racecourse to study the horses. The brothers would often collaborate with their father on paintings, however, Herring Jnr soon developed his own style and began painting farmyard and rustic scenes featuring horses and other farm animals. His emerging success caused some discord with his father, who from around 1836 began adding ‘SR’ or ‘Senr’ to his signature to avoid confusion between the two artists. Herring did not join his father when he later moved to London but at some point moved to Cambridgeshire where he met and married Emma Jane Dawson on 29 August, 1836. Together, they lived at Great Wilbraham with their 5 children.
By 1861, he had moved to nearby Fulbourn and continuing his successful career made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863. He began exhibiting at the British Institution from 1864 and also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street.
After the death of his first wife, Herring married the artist Catherine Augusta Rolfe on 5 December 1865 at St Pauls Church, Hammersmith in London. Catherine (or Kate) was the sister of the artists Alexander Frederick Rolfe (1814-1875) and Henry Leonides Rolfe (1823-1881) and the daughter of William E Rolfe, a friend of his father. They lived at Wilbraham Road in Fulbourn, later moving to The Poplars in Fulbourn where Herring spent the rest of his life. He died at Fulbourn on 6 March 1907.
Examples of his work are held by a number of museums and public collections including the Bradford Museum, Hawarth Art Gallery, Government Art Collection, Grundy Art Gallery, the Tate, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC and the Watford Museum & Witt Library.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Born in Lyon in 1918, Henri-André Martin spent his youth in Saint-Étienne. Following his father into the medical profession, he spent his first years studying medicine in Lyon, but also enrolled in the École de Beaux Arts during this time. Upon returning from captivity in 1942, Martin soon became director of the otolaryngology clinic at Édouard-Herriot hospital. Painting, however, remained his true calling in life - it was, to him, an invaluable form of self-expression. Reserved and extremely modest, and frequently regarded as somewhat aloof, art was a means of articulating his anxieties and apprehensions, as well as giving a voice to his inner child. Martin had a brush in hand at all times, wherever he went, and painted countless gouaches of varying sizes. His beach paintings in particular have been compared to those of Boudin. Until the 1970s, Martin had a tendency to paint ‘on the ground’, yet in all of his paintings, there is a distinct sense of distance and removal from the subject-matter. In the years that followed, we see a development in this simplification and abstraction of the subject-matter, as seen, for example, in his images of almond trees standing alone against the stark winter sky of Provence. The palette begins to darken, his work acquires a feeling of gravity, as his paintings of Hamburg Port evidently reflect. His collection entitled ‘Trunks’, six lithographic plates, draws on visual and written material in the book, L’Olivier. His interest in the symbolism of the olive tree subsequently grew, and he turned to literature, painting and historical traditions to develop and nuance his understanding of its allegorical value. This fascination with the olive tree, and more broadly, with the nature of symbolism, came to profoundly inform his later work. What he learnt to represent was not merely the physical reality of his subjects, but their implicit interconnection with abstract ideas. As René Déroudille writes, the lithographic plates are ‘especially devoted to and embrace renewal’, revealing an artist who is in ‘full mutation’. In the 1980s, Martin’s work took a more explicit turn towards abstraction. It was during this time that he produced a series of large nudes, which he entered into the major exhibition at L’Atrium in Lyon, in 1992. Golden Age Sheep and Goat in a Landscape - Dutch 17thC Old Master oil painting

Abraham Begeyn, Dutch Golden Age painter and Prussian court painter painted this wonderful 17th century Old Master oil painting. Painted circa 1690 and signed lower right, the subject matter is sheep and a goat under a tree in the foreground, amongst beautiful flora and fauna. Through the trees one can see some classical ruins to the left and to the right some buildings with a shepherd and his flock in front of the buildings and mountains beyond. Above is a beautiful sky tinged with pink, suggestive of dawn. There is tremendous detail in the flora and fauna and also the sheep's woolly coat. Begeyn particularly favoured painting this sort of scene with the elements of landscape, ruins or buildings and animals and was a master at it and highly prized in the Netherlands. This is an excellent example of Begeyn's work and is good condition given its age as a 17th century Old Master oil painting.

Abraham Begeyn (c. 1637 Leiden - 11 June 1697 Berlin), was a Dutch Golden Age painter. Begeyn was born in Leiden. Though perhaps known mostly for his Italianate landscapes and cattle in the manner of Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem, Begyn was a highly skilled painter active in many genres, who travelled widely. According to the RKD, Begeyn's earliest known work is from 1653, though he was first accepted into the Guild of St. Luke in Leiden in 1655. He stopped paying dues in 1667, because he set off for a trip to Italy. He is registered in Rome and Naples from 1659–1660. In the rampjaar or disaster year, of 1672, he is registered in Amsterdam, and after that he lived in London, where he painted at Ham House, Surrey, together with Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633–1707) and Dirck van Bergen...
