This oriental rug for sale was woven in Asian Anatolia, Turkey in the historic city of Hereke. In the mid-19th century, Sultan Abdul Majid proclaimed Hereke to be the royal weaving village. The small rugs were woven there were considered the finest in the world. All examples of this woven rug used select Borsa silk which is the finest quality carpet silk. The Sultan required that all of the silk rugs woven in Hereke had to be signed with the name Hereke. These oriental rugs were regularly woven for the aristocracy in Europe, Asia, and The Middle East. The design of this luxury rugs is unique because it is an interpretation of the famous 17th-century Mughal carpet from India. The Mughal carpet was exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum and was illustrated in the book called Flowers Under Foot, published by the Museum. The gold rug has 1200 knots per square inch, and the entire field is woven of silver/metallic thread. The signature of these patterned rugs (see detail photos) is written in Ottoman script and says Use Ipek, which was the premier workshops in Hereke during the 1970s.

These antique Runner rugs are exemplary in their quality and design and are considered amongst the best carpets made in the Caucasus region. These Traditional rugs for sale from this region use a distinctive weave, a double weft which occurs between every two rows of knots. The geography of Karabagh contributes to the rugs falling into multiple design categories: the village type similar to the richly coloured Kazaks, the city type influenced by classical carpet style and the Russian design appealing to Western tastes and sensibility. Karabagh rugs feature medallion like eagle Kazak and Kazak with medallions containing is like forms and pictorial and realistic (French style, Aubusson, and Savonnerie) floral motifs. This one shows horsemen making it a very collectable piece. This runner rug can be a very good idea as a stair runner and bedroom runner rug.

During the early seventeenth century, a weaver named Pierre DuPont travelled to the Levant. Upon his return, he claimed to have discovered the technique of creating Turkish rugs. Oriental rugs were extremely expensive during Bourbon times, and a French manufactory that could create the same type of rug would lower the price significantly. Henri VI of France–the reigning monarch at the time–took advantage of DuPont’s skills and established a workshop for him at the Louvre. In 1627, King Louis XIII founded a manufactory for DuPont and his apprentice, Simon Lourdes, on the site of a defunct soap factory in the sixteenth arrondissement (also known as Quai de Chaillot). The name “Savonnerie” was born from the French word “Savon” meaning “soap.” DuPont and Lourdes worked together, weaving rugs under a royal patent for the king and other nobles until they had a falling out and split up. Lourdes remained at the Chaillot location while DuPont went to his workshops in the Louvre, though both continued to make Savonnerie rugs.
