Heath was born in Burma in 1920 and arrived in England aged five. In 1938 he studied art under Stanhope Forbes at Newlyn and later at the Slade School of Art. While serving in WWII, he was captured and placed in a prisoner-of-war camp in Bavaria. Heath attempted to escape from the camp but was recaptured and placed in solitary confinement; this isolation proved crucial to the development of his artistic style, as he spent much of his time there experimenting with abstract forms.
When released from confinement, Heath befriended a fellow prisoner of war: Terry Frost. Together they explored the methods of painting which they had developed during their time in the camps, and following the war both became celebrated artists. We have several Terry Frost pieces available too.

My paintings explore the relationship between elements such as the skies, the oceans, the natural environment
such as the formation of rocks, cliffs, and weathered material. In my work, I aim to bring together certain
properties of each of these elements to create an experience and understanding of the world and the contrasting
relationships between each of these ideas.
The use of texture in my work is formed using material which has been subjected to the forces of the weather, and
I love to use ‘untouched’ and ‘natural’ material in my work to form the basis of all my paintings. It is the idea of
bringing together a number of natural materials in my work that inspires me. The contrast between elements such
as the roughness of the texture, the smoothness of the ink or paint. and the reflection of the metallics brings about
a composition and structure that is unique. The impact of the weather, space, and seasons has been important in
determining the structure of each of the paintings and the way the different elements and materials react to one
another.
The use of ink in my work has been a work in progress that I have been experimenting with over the past year.
The use of this new medium has proved to be invaluable to the message and direction that I would like my work
to take. On each of the works, I manipulate the Ink using air from my mouth as I want to form a stronger
relationship with the canvas and the way that the ink Is manipulated. I have particularly enjoyed the added contrast
which has been created between the variety of mediums being used.

Tathagata - a Pali or Sanscrit word used primarily by Siddartha Gautama Buddha to refer to himself. However it also the term for one who has reached enlightenment through Buddhist principles & has as many as eight different meanings. Generally accepted is the translation one who has thus arrived. And this vivid painting from Berlin has arrived! Drawing on his knowledge of the faith & his research into the theme this is a beautiful & informed rendition of Buddha. The colours are vibrant but enable one to look deep and take the essence of tranquility from the image. This Buddha would sit happily on an altar or a home corner of peace and tranquility, giving an essence of calm & preparedness to those who stand before it.
