The present work - Takiguchi's own piece, a lenticular double portrait - combines Rrose Sélavy's signature with Man Ray's 1930 profile of Duchamp. Its subject, Marcel Duchamp, then signed this work in pencil. Its title, "Rrose Sélavy in the Wilson-Lincoln System", refers to Duchamp's Green Box note describing a two-way, changeable portrait of presidents Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson. Rrose Selavy is, famously, Marcel Duchamp's pseudonym and alter ego. Duchamp died before Takiguchi's book was completed, so this print is one of the very last graphic works that has been hand signed by Marcel Duchamp. It was published in Japan, and is a very elusive work stateside. Another edition of this work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. ABOUT THE ARTIST Lynd Ward is acknowledged as one of America’s foremost wood engravers and book illustrators of the first half of the twentieth century. The son of a Methodist preacher, Lynd Ward, moved from Chicago to Massachusetts at an early age. After four months, they settled in Leipzig, where Ward studied at the National Academy of Graphic Arts and Bookmaking. Yamato-e originated from interest in reproducing early Tang dynasty paintings, and was later reinvented and further refined to fit Japanese cultural perceptions in the late Heian period. Yamato, sometimes referred to as wa or kazu had become synonymous with the Tosa-ha by the Muromachi period as a way for Japanese artist to distinguish their works from those of mainland Chinese paintings, kara-e. Yamato-e incorporated various visual and literary techniques for establishing narrative. Works were not always accompanied with text and may rely on heavily on period specific visual motifs, icons, and symbols to relay a story or theme. Mitsuoki's style incorporated the depth and calligraphy techniques of ink wash brushwork similar to Song dynasty and Yuan dynasty Chinese court paintings...
