Wonderful lacquered birch table designed by Herman De Vries for Cushman from their Contemporary Line. Great simple shape and modernist form with nice attention to details.
Herman De Vries was born in Holland and died in the United States. His father was an artisan who created small wooden ships. Herman emigrated to the U.S. as a young adult and worked with furniture makers in the Midwest, including one of the Stickley brothers, most likely Albert, whose company, Stickley Brothers, was located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In the 1930s, DeVries appears in Bennington, Vermont. There he bridged the gap between colonial-styled and modern furniture with the “Colonial Creations” and the “Modern Creations” lines, both manufactured by the H. T. Cushman company. Each DeVries piece was inspired by antique forms, including humble cobbler’s benches and carpenter’s nail boxes...
