The Gap
By Mauricio Sandoval
Located in Mexico City, CDMX
Mauricio Sandoval (Aguascalientes, México, 1960) Lives and works in Mexico City Mauricio Sandoval is an abstract painter, one of the best ever in Mexico; he creates his own pictorial language that expresses a never-ending search and continuous, organic movement. His production is characteristically expansive, sometimes saturating spaces with texture or color, energetic, long, and fluid traces. Sandoval’s work has retained some determining constants throughout his trajectory, during which he has developed a complex relationship between poetic language and image. From an early age, the artist has had an ever-present intense relationship with poetry and literature, mythological and scientific references as we can see in “The Gap...

MEDITERRANEAN SONATA
By Arica Hilton
Located in Chicago, IL
MEDITERRANEAN SONATA Narrative: When it comes to inspiration, I have to say that JMW Turner’s “Burning of the Houses of Parliament” is one of my all-time favorite paintings. When I first began preparation for this exhibition not only was I having artist block, but the California wildfires were overwhelming the news. I had just started this painting and was thinking about a more contemporary way of expression. But I needed a push. I have always subscribed to a Luministic style, emphasizing tranquility, depicting calm, reflective water and hazy skies. I decided to look up my other favorite modern-day artists, Danish/Icelandic, Olafur Eliasson. He had a show at the Tate Modern and coincidentally, it was about JMW Turner’s color process. I knew I was going in the right direction. Maktub – it is written, or the other translation was, it was destiny.... Like Turner, I wanted to shape and frame the light with a sense of infinity, but on my own terms. It is wonderful to be inspired by another artist, but it is important to create your own style. Brush and palette knife, layer upon layer, And this is how Mediterranean Sonata unfolded. ARICA HILTON BIOGRAPHY: Perhaps it was because she was born on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, an important waterway for cross-cultural trade and the birth of great civilizations, that Arica Hilton brings a passion for our earth and its inhabitants to her life as an artist and global advocate. Whether hiking the Himalayas to experience the country’s culture, or cage diving with great white sharks off Guadalupe Island, or participating in scientific expeditions to document threats to the health of our oceans, Hilton is driven to pursue first-hand encounters with people and their living environments. The seeds for Hilton’s dauntless pursuits were sown early. At six-years-old she moved to the United States, not knowing a word of English. Her sense of displacement had a lasting impact, prompting a search to uncover where she belonged in the world. Hilton determined early on that her most illuminating pathway would be the road less taken – a pursuit that continues today. Near and far, Hilton seeks the unique and uncommon. Her adventures have included 22 visits to Asia. She has swum, run and biked her way through triathlons. She has participated in global initiatives for just governance and human security. And she inspires awareness and searches for solutions to improve living conditions for humanity and our earth as a whole. Hilton’s art and global advocacy are informed by the different schools of thought and cultures that she continually encounters. Hilton’s own creative pursuits began with writing poetry and expanded to painting when she began to illustrate her poems. Her artistic evolution sparked an interest in the realm of creation as she discovered mathematics, physics, quantum mechanics and string theory. Her studies solidified her passion for environmentalism when she learned that stars are nothing more than another extension of humanity – that the elements in the bloodstream are the same elements that comprise a star. The interconnection was what Hilton had been searching for her whole life. As Hilton says “We are the same as a star. How beautiful is that?” Today, Hilton is a visual artist, poet and global advocate who travels worldwide to enrich her life and the lives of others. She is based in Chicago, where she is the director and curator of Hilton Asmus...

Laser-cut encaustic red burgundy floral embroidery on paper
By Anila Quayyum Agha
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Anila Quayyum Agha All the Flowers are for Me - Burgundy, 2016 Laser-cut encaustic embroidery on paper 21 x 21 inches 53.3 x 53.3 cm AQA038 Anila Quayyum Agha examines issues of global politics, cultural identity, mass media and gender roles in her multidisciplinary practice. The Pakistani-American artist is best known for her immersive, large-scale light installations in which she laser-cuts elaborate patterns into three-dimensional cubes. Suspended and lit from within, the cubes cast lace-like, floor-to-ceiling shadows that completely transform the surrounding environment, alluding to the richly ornamented public spaces such as mosques that Agha was excluded from as a female growing up in Lahore. In addition to her suspended light installations, Agha also creates wall-mounted sculptural works, including her Flowers series (2018) that explores love and loss inspired by the mixed emotions she experienced following her son’s wedding and mother’s passing, events that happened in the same year. Although these works may appear decorative, they are imbued with meaning, from the floral patterns that express the beauty and femininity of her mother, to the metallic threads commonly used for wedding dresses in Pakistan. The visual elements collectively amplify the interplay between the matrimonial and the funereal, and by extension, the larger cycle of life. To produce these elaborate works, Agha laser-cuts vibrantly hued encaustic paper with intricate patterns and adorns them with light-reflecting embroidery and beads. These exquisitely detailed drawings are framed within shadow boxes, allowing light to pass through the cut-outs and cast patterned shadows in a manner similar to her large-scale light installations. The framing and shadows allow these works to transcend their two-dimensionality. Anila Quayyum Agha has an M.F.A. in fiber arts from the University of North Texas. She has exhibited her work across the globe, including in the 2018 Kansas City Biennale, curated by Dan Cameron; the Peabody Essex Museum, Massachusetts; the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York; the Dallas Contemporary Art Museum, Texas; the National Museum of Sculpture, Valladolid, Spain; and the Cheongju Craft Biennale, Korea. Her work is in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Ohio; the Grand Rapids Art...

Untitled RAG-4
By Rick Garcia
Located in Chicago, IL
Acrylic on canvas 30 x 24 inches Rick Garcia's RAG13 Collection is inspired by the observation that there has been a significant and permanent change in our public and private lives. These artworks use symbolism to illustrate how the ubiquitous presence of suspicion and the act of being a suspect have both become a way of life. Adults and children are shown as generic solid shapes with parts missing to indicate loss of identity and the relinquishing of certain rights. The watchful eye of authority is always present as a figure dressed in black with three white stripes. All of the figures have a red dot to symbolize the human heart; how we are all connected. This red dot also represents being a target or a person of interest. Overall, this latest series creates a surreal flow of images, colors, and shapes blending into a beautiful and poignant work of art. About the Artist: "Photography has been part of my creativity throughout my life and more recently has become influential in my abstract work on canvas. The magical shapes of water gracefully floating or scattering in mid-air reveals the true god-like essence of nature. I am fascinated studying these images of bright tiny mercury-like globes, silky trails, dancing droplets and crystal clear languid sheets. " Rick Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba, and very soon after, his parents relocated to Miami, Florida. He was always encouraged to follow his dream of pursuing and developing his talent in art. In later years he found a deep-rooted connection to surrealism, especially the work of Salvador Dali. Garcia had become obsessed with the unique images and amazing technique of the Spanish painter and he eventually traveled to Port Lligat, Spain to visit the home and surroundings of his mentor. After years of attending the Art Institute of Miami, where he refined his artistic vision in drawing and painting, he was soon earning an income from published illustrations. Garcia has enjoyed a rich and diverse career starting with the hit TV show "Miami Vice" commissioning him to create a mural on the side of a three story building, and used his paintings for interior shots. Apart from a growing number of private commissions, his distinctive images were commissioned by The United Nations Postal Administration in 1998 and 2003. His stamps brought awareness to the growing extinction of the rainforest and its inhabitants, and followed with the 50th Anniversary of the World Health Organization, bringing awareness to the vanishing supply of freshwater, where it earned him the prestige of the most beautiful stamp series of 2003. Garcia was chosen as an "Absolut Artist of the 90s" in the popular vodka ad campaign and with his second piece Absolut Electric, this further drew worldwide attention. 1998, 1999, and 2001 garnered him the distinction of official artist to The Grammy Awards where his creations influenced the look of the live broadcast and graced the covers of the official program book, CDs, posters, apparel, and other various items. His work included portraits of stars such as Destiny's Child, Ricky Martin, Coldplay, Santana, Celia Cruz, Black Eyed Peas, Imogen Heap and Kanye West. His life long passion of thoroughbred racing tapped him in 2008 to be the official artist of the 2008 Kentucky Derby Festival. Founder of Benihana, Rocky Aoki, gave Rick complete creative control to design a sushi restaurant on Miami Beach. Along with sculptor Bruce Hanners, they built and installed an 1800 sq. ft octopus designed by Rick to be the massive ceiling...

Underwater
By Erin Rachel Hudak
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Underwater, 2020, 12x9 inches, acrylic on wood panel Reminiscent of an underwater journey, this painting is an exploration of a garden that flows in and out with the tides. The neon yellow fades beautifully into stains of green, then light blue with tuberous biomorphic shapes in the foreground. Born in Stow, Ohio in 1978, Erin Rachel Hudak creates collages, paintings and installations that discuss ideas of freedom, power, perception and transformation. Hudak’s artwork is often inspired by her personal relationship with nature juxtaposed with various histories of "mans" relationship with ‘The Land’. Living in New York City has furthered her interest in the multiple intersections of the natural world within and around the city. Hudak has been awarded with grants for her public sculpture projects: See Thru, Brooklyn NY 2014 , What We See, Brooklyn, NY, 2012; Love You Forever, Sun Valley Idaho...
