Scandinavian Modern Teak Low Cabinet Sideboard Model #394 by Kai Kristiansen
By IKEA, Kai Kristiansen, Aksel Kjersgaard
Located in Topeka, KS
Incredible 1950-1960’s Scandinavian Modern teak 4 drawer low cabinet sideboard (or bench) Model #394 by Kai Kristiansen for Aksel Kjersgaard Odder. This piece has been attributed based upon its stamped mark, archived research including online sources, vintage documentation and catalogs, designer literature, and other materials. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are a couple of small darker spots on the top. A broken leg has been repaired and we have touched up some nicks & dings. Fresh coat of Danish oil applied. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 1950-1960’s.
My, my… what have we here? A fabulous Danish low cabinet? YES. A stunning Scandinavian Modern sideboard or media/console cabinet? YES. An incredible low bench or dresser? Also… YES!!! Talk about versatility overload!! This is a phenomenal low cabinet model #394 by Kai Kristiansen for Aksel Kjersgaard Odder. It is comprised of a gorgeous teak frame with stunning wood grain, straight square legs, and four drawers featuring 2 double recessed half-moon handles. The top drawers open from the bottom, and the bottom drawers open from the top! It’s a simple but oh-so-stunning detail. This is an INCREDIBLE cabinet and it’s bursting with versatility, impeccable style, and ample storage. It could be used as a wonderful low dresser for lingerie or other delicate items in a bedroom, a fantastic sideboard, credenza, console, or media cabinet in a living or dining area. Maybe a marvelous low bench cabinet in a hall or entry, or in any room that needs a touch of quintessential Scandinavian Modern flair. It’s EXACTLY what the designer ordered!
Kai Kristiansen was born in 1929 in Denmark. His approach to design was, and still is colored by his outlook on life with his constant search of “getting as much as possible out of as little as possible.” A phrase he uses to this day is “Economy, ecology, and common sense.” He was taught and trained as a cabinetmaker by a Danish design role model Kaare Klint. He knew that early in his career how to create furniture with functionality and refined details while keeping the production methods and costs in mind. He designed his first table...

Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert ‘Louisiana’ Dining Chair in Oak and Suede
By Vilhelm Wohlert, Poul Jeppesens Møbelfabrik
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert for P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik, ‘Louisiana’ dining chair, oak, suede, Denmark, 1958.
The ‘Louisiana’ chair was initially created for the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, by the Danish architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. Inside the modern building complex the chairs were supposed to serve as functional chairs for events. Therefore, Bo and Wohlert had a comfortable chair in mind that is easily stackable. The round seat with off-white suede upholstery and a curved backrest provide comfort.
Jørgen Bo (1919-1999) first studied at the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts until 1941 and in 1960 was appointed as a professor. Together with Vilhelm Wohlert, Jørgen Bo designed...

Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen Armchair "Model 1748" for Fritz Hansen
By Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, Peter Hvidt
Located in Utrecht, NL
Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen’s design language operates as a set of relations linking the everyday world - composed of objects, spaces, people - to the cultural ideologies that motivate the persistence of a social democratically infused “way of life.” The design duo’s company was a pioneering force in Danish furniture design thanks to this sentiment.
While the duo solidified their careers with industrial production, more specifically the “AX chair” in the 1950s, this earlier model is perhaps even more stunning in many aspects. “Model 1748” is their most well-known fully upholstered chair, with a design that builds on the traditions of Danish cabinetmaking. The subtle decorative qualities and the simple lines deriving from the early 20th century design movements give this chair its elegance. This armchair shows the homely curviness that defined the design of the mid-century throughout Scandinavia. The back is lightly bent for ergonomic comfort, and have stylish button tufting. The tapered, stained beech legs complement both the shape of the armchair, and the bouclé upholstery.
Quality craftsmanship was of optimum importance for Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen, therefore they collaborated with the best cabinetmakers of the era. This chair was manufactured by Fritz Hansen, Denmark’s most famous company of the time. Founded in Denmark in 1872, and proceeded to manufacture many of the classic icons of Danish Design in the following decades. With a classic look, storied design and solid quality, these chairs are truly soulful and timeless.
Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair has been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.
Dimensions:
27.55 in W x 31.88 in D x 33.07 in H; Seat height 16.53 in
70 cm W x 81 cm D x 84 cm H; Seat height 42 cm
About the designer:
Hvidt & Mølgaard was a Copenhagen-based, Danish design and architectural firm which existed from 1944 until 2009. Founded by Peter Hvidt (1916-1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907-1993), the company was a pioneering force in Danish furniture design and industrialized production in the 1950s, creating furniture that was easy to mass-produce and economic to transport.
Danish architect-designer Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen was born in 1907. His formative years were spent in Copenhagen, studying at the Aalborg Technical School and at the Art and Crafts School of the Design Museum (graduating in 1928). From 1931 until 1934, he continued his studies in furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under the instruction of Danish master Kaare Klint (1888-1954). Peter Hvidt was born in Copenhagen in 1916. He studied architecture and cabinetry at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Subsequently, he worked at various design firms before establishing his own studio in 1942.
In 1944, Hvidt designed the Portex Chair...

Nanna Ditzel, born in 1923. Was a Danish designer graduated from the furniture department of the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. Has been studying under prof. Kaare Klint at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen. Nanna Ditzel is working with experimental and industrial design furniture, textiles, silver, faience and glass. Has experimented with the use of split-level living for indoors and outdoors. The ideas have been carried through in playgrounds, children libraries and showrooms. Freelance designer, she has a design office and showrooms in London. Nanna Ditzel started independent design office in 1946 together with Jorgen Ditzel. The co-operation lasted until the death of Jorge Ditzel in 1961.
Nanna Ditzel created many designs for Georg Jensen, mostly jewelry although she also created some hollowware. The relationship between the couple and the Silversmith began when Nanna decided to start designing jewelry as something she could do at home while her children slept. Soon after, a jewelry competition sponsored by A. Michelsen arose, and her designs had won first prize. Later on, in 1954, Finn Juhl, who was developing the 50th anniversary exhibition, passed the design work off for the exhibition to the Ditzels. Five pieces of jewelry were created for this exhibit, which were very well received. Further jewelry designs were created, and many of these pieces would go on to win various awards and prizes. In 1968, Nanna Ditzel remarried to Kurt Heide and relocated to London where they continued to work in the realm of design, establishing their own company Nanna Ditzel Productions Ltd. In 1986, her second husband passed away, and she moved back to Denmark, continuing her work. In recent years, Ditzel has focused mainly on furniture design, such as the Trinidad chair in 1993, however this design has also led to the further refinement for her jewelry pieces such as the bracelet #389 in 1994.
Ditzel has won many major awards during her long career and has had her work exhibited all over the world. She received the silver and gold medals at the Milan Tirennale (1954 and 1960), the Lunning Prize (with Jorgen Ditzel in 1954) and a gold medal at the International Furniture Design Competition in 1990, and the Thorvald Bindesboll Medal in 1999. She has also taken on the title of Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, Honorable Royal Designer ( 1996). From Georg Jensen Hollowware...
