John Leroux, London. Twin Fusee Balloon Clock
By John Leroux
Located in Amersham, GB
An 18th century balloon shaped bracket or table clock by John Leroux of Charing Cross, dating from circa 1790. The waisted case surmounted by a brass pineapple finial over a drum housing the movement. The dial is behind a hinged convex glazed cast brass bezel to front and brass carrying handles to sides, over hipped concave-sided section forming the base. The front has an applied mount of a sunburst mask, the rear with keyhole shaped door incorporating fine scroll-pierced sound fret set within the frame of the case, on generous cavetto moulded skirt base incorporating break-arch recess to apron and with ogee bracket feet.
The five knopped pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with rounded angles to the rectangular plates and anchor escapement regulated by a long bob pendulum with an effective length of approximately 11.5 inches, the backplate signed J. Leroux, London to centre, the 7 inch circular single sheet silvered brass Roman numeral dial signed Leroux, Charing Cross to centre, with fine pierced steel hands and Arabic five minutes to outer track.

Pair of Walnut Armchairs, Late 16th Century, French Renaissance, with Ram Mask C
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
"This rare pair of upholstered open armchairs relate to examples in museum collections in France, the USA and the UK. Few pieces of Renaissance furniture featuring ram’s head motif arm terminals survive as the chairs would have been in the ownership of the elite symbolising leadership and authority. The condition of these armchairs reflects their age and use and they have a rich colour and lustrous patina.
The form of these chairs is characteristic of a stereotypical Renaissance model. The upholstered section of the backs are upholstered in wool with applied 17th century floral needlework faced with gilded studs and supported by square section uprights. The channelled tablet and stylised rosette incised curved arms terminate in acanthus capped carved rams' masks and are supported by column turned uprights headed by an entrelac collar. The ram is a symbol of leadership and authority and it also determination, action, initiative, and Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac. The seats are upholstered in wool with applied 17th century needlework faced with gilded studs and supported by tapering column/ring turned front legs and square section back legs. Some of the stretchers with moulded detailing. Standing on front ball feet. Exceptional original colour and patina. Henri II 1550-60.
Condition: The chairs are both sturdy with exceptional colour and patina. One armchair with a splice on the rhs back leg and replaced but period front and lhs stretcher both bearing old nail marks, two other replaced stretchers and the back uprights bearing old nail marks indicating that they were upholstered at some point. The other armchair with an old repair to a break in the right back leg and an old patch near the end of the leg, replaced but period back and lhs stretcher, small patch to bottom of lhs arm where it meets the support. Old worm marks and some losses. Considering the age of the armchairs, these repairs and replacements are not unusual and consistent with the repairs on the related armchairs in museum collections. They suggest that the chairs either fell backwards at some point or someone leant back while sitting in them.
Back Height 107cm, 42in, Seat Height 59.5cm, 23½in
Width 60cm, 23½ in, Seat 59cm, 23¼in
Depth including arm 59cm, 23¼in, Seat 49cm, 19¼in
Provenance: Deaccessioned by The National Galleries of Scotland
Bearing an old transport label from Alain Moatti (French architect) to Mrs Katz, London
Literature: Related to :
There are comparable armchairs in international museum collections dated to the second half of the 16th century. Most share the following characteristics with the above pair, the form, the ram's mask carved to the end of each arm, the curvilinear outline of the arm rests, the ring turned front legs as well as the plain square section back legs and plain stretchers.
1. Two stained glass windows...

The New Antiquarians: At Home with Young Collectors
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
An inspiring collection of idiosyncratic interiors assembled around eclectic collections of objects with life and history
The once-rarefied world of antiques is bursting open thanks to a new generation of collectors. The New Antiquarians features twenty-two young connoisseurs whose spirited interiors exemplify unorthodox approaches to living with history. Hailing from across the United States and Britain, they brazenly blend the old with the new, embrace anachronism and pastiche, employ serious knowledge with humor and wit, and consider vintage and historical objects through the lens of contemporary values. The New Antiquarians is an exuberant entry point into the world of antiques, highlighting one-of-a-kind collections and single-minded collectors whose stories suggest compelling new ways of living with the past.
Collectors whose homes are featured include Jared Austin; Emily Adams Bode Aujla and Aaron Singh Aujla; Pablo Bronstein; Collier Calandruccio; Adam Charlap Hyman; Emily Eerdmans; Jared Frank; Andrew LaMar Hopkins...

12 Important John Gee 1779-1824 Original Regency Hardwood
Brass Dining Chairs
By John Gee
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer for sale this rare and important suite of twelve original John Gee 1779-1824 Regency bergère Rosewood with brass inlay dining chairs
Where to start, these are as rare as they come, an original suite of John Gee chairs and twelve no less! They have rosewood frames, brass inlaid and period bergère seats with later mate removable cushions. I have included a brief history on John Gee below along with some of is later sales and so on
Most likely if you are a collector and follower of fine furniture, you would have seen this design many times before, these are the originals, where it all began, the first edition period pieces by one of the great cabinet makers of the late 18th to early 19th century. The craftsmanship is as fine as they come
In terms of the condition, they are all structurally sound, the finish is original and they haven’t been professionally restored so far as I can see. There are some small losses which is quite normal to the brass work and some punches to the bergère again consistent with age and use, they are after all, over 200 years old. We have deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished them from top to bottom, I can have them fully, professionally restored for the cost price should the new owner wish, they can be made as gallery perfect as possible

Gee, John 49, Wardour Street, Soho, London; chair maker and turner (fl.1779–c.1824)
Also listed as Gee & Sons (1809) and Gee, Thomas Ayliffe (1804– 09)
In about 1779 John Gee replaced Thomas Ayliffe as partner to Benjamin Crompton, who had been Turner in Ordinary to George III since 1762. On 14 October 1787 Gee was sworn in as turner ‘jointly with Thos. Ayliffe his partner’, but his name, unlike Ayliffe's, does not appear in the Court and City Register until 1799. Ayliffe was the fourth member of his family to be a turner to the King, so Gee was probably the junior partner.
In 1790 Lord Wilton bought chairs for the Music Room at Heaton Hall, Lancs. ‘2 June 1790 Aycliffe & Gees Bill for chairs etc. £49 8s.’. From 1799, when he is described as ‘Chair-maker, 49 Wardour Street, Soho’, Gee is listed in London directories.
In 1803 he is called ‘Chairmaker & Turner to His Majesty’ and this title occurs regularly in entries up to 1823; in most directories, however, this appointment is omitted. Gee is also included in the list of master cabinet makers attached to Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803. The last directory listing for Gee is 1823–24.
On 8 November 1804 Thomas Ayliffe Gee was appointed Turner in Ordinary to the King jointly with his father and briefly, in one directory of 1809 the firm is listed as ‘Gee & Sons, Turners & chair makers’. John Gee's name is shown in the Court and City Register until 1831, well after his apparent retirement.
Charles Holme Bridges, who succeeded Gee at 49 Wardour St in 1824 received a royal warrant in 1822 but is first entered as a turner in the 1832 Register. Gee's productions have been identified through stamped marks: ‘J GEE’, ‘GEE’, l GEE’, ‘Jn. G’ and a crown, J within G, and ‘GEE WARDOUR ST’ have been noted. Certain chairs are stamped with initials: ‘RR’, ‘GL’, ‘GH’, ‘IT’ and ‘WG’ have been noted. These are probably the marks of individual chairmakers in Gee's employ.
His seems to have been a substantial undertaking. The following summary list records chairs by Gee in the order of their emergence:
Pride's of London, 1962, 6 chairs, painted trophies on green and brown background, stamped ‘J GEE’. Bearne's Sale Rooms, 1964, settee, 2 armchairs, 7 chairs, stamped ‘J GEE’; 8 chairs, brass inlay, stamped ‘J GEE’. Sotheby's, London, 19 June 1970, lot 80, 4 chairs, simulated rosewood, gilt, stamped ‘GEE’ and ‘RR’; Sotheby's, London, 23 October 1970, lot 170, 6 chairs, simulated rosewood and brass inlay, stamped ‘GEE’ and ‘GL’ (some only); Sotheby's, London, 11 June 1971, lot 192, 2 armchairs, ebonised and gilt, stamped ‘GEE’; Christie's, London, 20 January 1972, lot 64, 8 chairs, ebonised, stamped ‘I GEE’ and ‘GH’; Bearnes & Waycotts, 1974(?), armchair, painted. Christie's, London, 31 October 1974, lot 98, 3 chairs, gilt, one branded ‘Jn. G’ twice with crown, the other two branded with crown, and with trade label of Copworth Bros. & Harrison, 22 Old Bond Street, Carpet & Cabinet Manufacturer to Her Majesty; Pride's of London, 1975, 6 chairs, simulated rosewood and brass inlay.
