Antique Necklace hand made in 18K yellow gold with a serpent and heart motif, the heart and serpent have fancy cut red garnets and the serpent's eyes and nose are rose cut diamonds.
This necklace is in fine condition, 16.25 inches long with the hanging section of the serpent and heart is 1.5 inches. The weight is 30.6 grams. Please note: Our model in the photographs has a medium to large necklace size and hand size. This antique necklace bears no marks. We have performed an acid test to confirm its gold purity as being 18K (.750).
When in the late 1830's Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (in Germany) proposed to his cousin Queen Victoria with a ring in the form of a snake, he soon became Prince Consort and Victorians soon came to consider serpent motif jewels to be symbols of eternal love.
And, when Albert died in 1860, Victoria, as if to demonstrate her eternal commitment, entered a period of mourning and formal remembrance that lasted for the rest of her life, thereby publicly showing her love decades after Albert's death.

This model is recorded as the first sculpture exhibited by Pasquale Romanelli, it met with such success that it was subsequently given a prize at the New York Exhibition of 1854 and also at the 1861 first Great Italian exhibition which followed the Unification of Italy in 1860. The statue was bought by Italian king S.M. Vittorio Emanuele II.

Pasquale Romanelli was born in Florence on May 28 1812. When he was 15 years old he entered the studio runned by Master Sculptor Luigi Pampaloni and later moved to Lorenzo Bartolini’s studio in Borgo San Frediano. Lorenzo Bartolini was a teacher at Accademia in 1837 and suggested the young pupil to attend proper sculpture training at the Accademia of Belle Arti. Soon he learned to sculpt in marble at such a high level that Bartolini himself did not need to finish his pieces if they have been carved by Pasquale.
In 1840 he got his studio at the San Barnaba Monastry (nearby San Lorenzo church) and in this years he already took part in the political life, sure enough his subjects were connected to his political IDEA of freedom and independence of Italy. In 1850 Lorenzo Bartolini died his heirs had to deal with several sculptures uncompleted and sort out how to finish them without distorting either the original project and the Master’s style. As Bartolini was very jealous of his “last touch”, the heirs chose Pasquale Romanelli to complete most of his works, as he was the only assistant that could match the ability of the master. Just to mention some of this works, according to the tradition, the famous sculpture ”La fiducia in Dio” now housed at Hermitage Museum was sculpted by Pasquale Romanelli from an original model by Bartolini, as well as the “Monumento Demidoff” placed in Piazza Demidoff in Florence. Till the end of his life he worked on several commissions, either public monuments as the sculpture Francesco Ferrucci (Portico degli Uffizi) and private ones, mostly sold abroad. This monumental and highly unusual large-scale decoupage tableau—measuring 44.25 inches wide by 35 inches high—is an extraordinary and densely composed visual compendium of 18th- and 19th-century figures of global significance. Executed in a monochrome palette with light hand-tinting, the work comprises hundreds of individual portrait engravings and narrative vignettes intricately collaged together to form a panoramic composition of historical, cultural, scientific, literary, and military figures, interspersed with allegorical and architectural elements.
This form of assemblage is rooted in the 19th-century practice of *papiers collés* and popular scrapbooking traditions, but this work surpasses decorative craft in both ambition and intellectual scope, bordering on the encyclopedic. The hand-cut images appear to have been culled from period illustrated books and engraved portrait sources—most notably from publications such as *The Illustrated London News*, *Harper’s Weekly*, and *The Eclectic Magazine*—as well as engraved frontispieces and serialized pictorial histories. The result is a vast visual lexicon of Enlightenment and Romantic thought, likely intended as a celebration of moral, intellectual, and national achievement.
At the composition’s apex, presiding over the assembled figures, is a classically draped winged allegory—possibly *Fame* or *Liberty*—holding a trumpet and laurel branch. The mountainous background, waterfalls, architectural ruins, and pastoral settings lend the piece a theatrical and didactic ambiance, evoking 19th-century didascalic panoramas.
A partial identification of historical figures visible in the composition includes:
* **George Washington** – Posed centrally, gesturing outward with one hand; he appears multiple times in the scene and is shown in both military uniform and formal dress.
* **Napoleon Bonaparte** – Recognizable by his uniform, bicorne hat, and stern gaze; appears in profile and frontal portraits.
* **Benjamin Franklin** – Seen holding a scroll; a common figure in Enlightenment iconography.

This is a fabulous and rare antique festoon Bohemian necklace created in England during the late Victorian era, back in the 1880's. The outstanding necklace is pretty impressive in size and was masterfully crafted in gilt metal. It is composed by nineteen links and five dangle drops elements, which are embellished with a fabulous assortment of three hundred-ninety-eight natural intense red garnets. These rose and cabochons cut garnet stones were a Victorian favorite, often used in late-era jewelry designs. The necklace length is little over the sixteen inches and is fitted with a concealed security push box. This is an amazing iconic piece from the period in tremendous grade of preservation with absolutely no gemstones replacements. Surely an eye-catcher and a great conversation piece.

A festoon necklace, is a design motif of a garland or string of flowers, leaves or ribbons. A festoon is a type of necklace that contains several drapes or swags of beads, chains, metal extensions, or other parts as the core elements of the design. Was very popular in the 18th and 19th century and even today.
The Victorian Jewelry
This era is one of the most influenced and influential periods of antique jewelry. This period is defined by the British monarch, in this case, Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the Empress of India, years 1837-1901. There are 3 sub-periods within this era. First, the early, Romantic period, which is soaked in traditions, natural motifs in gold and silver, clear stones only being worn during the day and colored gems by night. The second being the Grand or mourning period, which coincides with the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert the consort, who died in December of 1861. This period included large, dark, somber, dramatic jewelry, with a lot of black onyx, jet wood, amethyst, garnet and gold. This lasted until 1880's, when the aesthetic period of jewelry began. The Late or third stage of the Victorian period, use more complex and feminine motifs, returning to the natural, including many floral and celestial designs, with more decadent gemstones, lasting until the turn of the century. The Victorian era of jewelry includes many movements found in other countries, including revivals such as the Etruscan the Roman and the Egyptian as well as the Art Nouveau, Liberty style and Arts and Crafts design movements which lead into the beginning of the twentieth century.

Biography: Poupaert Lionel was born on September 27, 1900 in Bruges. His father was a goldsmith. In 1931 he got married and went to live in the Biezenstraat. He died on February 12, 1989.
He was a painter, restorer of paintings and copyist of Flemish Primitives.
In 1912 he entered the Bruges Academy of Fine Arts with director Flori Van Acker as his teacher and famed artist. In 1926 the Municipal Council of Bruges appointed him as a teacher at the Bruges Academy. He would remain in this position until 1966, the year he retired. Poupaert turned out to be a solid painter with high qualities. He painted numerous Bruges townscapes and also made portraits of important Bruges figures.
In the period 1952-1956, he painted two portraits of guardians and superiors of the convent of Our Lady of the Pottery. In 1955 he collaborated with Jules Fonteyne on the murals of the Church of Christ the King.
In 1961 he copied for the second time Memling’s triptych “The Adoration of the Magi” by order of Bruges Naval College who gave it as a gift to the King and Queen of Belgium...

This is a classic 9k gold snake ring that has two beautiful rhodolite garnets in the head of each snake. The snake heads interlock and the garnets are bead set into a mount that are carved to look like tulips. The oval rhodolite garnets are a deep purple pink and have a beautiful fire to their rich, reddish purple hue.
