The Bridge, Santa Maria
By James Abbott McNeill Whistler
Located in New York, NY
James Whistler (1834-1903), The Bridge, Santa Marta, 1879-80, etching with drypoint, printed in sepia on fine laid paper. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed imp on the tab (also with an exceedingly light butterfly lower right in the plate). Kennedy 204, probably eighth (final) state; Glasgow 201, probably state 9 (of 9) (cf. Margaret F. MacDonald, Grischka Petri, Meg Hausberg, and Joanna Meacock, James McNeill Whistler: The Etchings, a catalogue raisonné, University of Glasgow, 2011), Lochnan 199. Trimmed to the platemark by the artist, h: 11.8 x w: 7.9 in / h: 30 x w: 20.1 cm.
A fine impression, printed with subtle tone.
The bridge theme occurs repeatedly in Whistler’s vistas. It is also the main focus of more than one of the Venetian prints. While some bridges are seen from below, from where one would see it if approaching in a gondola (for example Ponte del Piovan, Kennedy 209), The Bridge depicts the scene from a high perspective, opening up the view into the far distance. The small boat approaching the arch in the foreground is again, as in the earlier Thames prints, a stock motif that is probably ultimately derived from the Japanese woodcuts of Hokusai and Hiroshige. The bridge here is the Ponte de le Terese over the Rio de l’Arzere in the Santa Marta quarter.
The early biography of Whistler by Elizabeth and Joseph Pennell is essential for its “immense quantity of information” but also notorious for “the inherent hyperbole and misinformation” (Eric Denker, Annotated Bibliography, in Fine, p. 184). Still, it is worth quoting from the Pennels’ appraisal of The Bridge: “Simplicity of expression has never been carried further. Probably the finest plate, in its simplicity and directness, is The Bridge. Whistler now obtained the quality of richness by suggesting detail, and also by printing. In The Traghetto...

Tannenbaum
original color silkscreen signed on verso, Christmas tree, winter
By Ruth Grotenrath
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'O'Tannenbaum' (Artist's #30129) is an original color silkscreen print by Ruth Grotenrath, signed by the artist on verso. Influenced by the works of Expressionists like Henri Matisse and the woodblock prints of early modern Japanese artists like Katsushika Hokusai, Ruth Grotenrath's 'O'Tannenbaum' combines the expressive use of color of the former with the precision of the latter to create a Christmas card that is as vibrant as it is subtle. Depicting a pine tree decked with ornaments and stockings, Grotenrath has rendered the tree-topping star as a ball of flames to analogize the warmth and spirit of the holiday season.

"Chittering
Chattering IV" Folk inspired linocut bird series in blue and white
By Lisa Houck
Located in Wellesley, MA
This is one of a series of 6 related bird prints, identical in size and each the same shade of bright blue and white, which are as commanding individually as they are in groupings. Lisa Houck is a very established New England area artist as recognized for her public installations, paintings, watercolors, textiles and mosaics as her work with linocuts and woodblock prints. At times reminiscent of Folk and Aborigine art, inspired as well by James Audubon and Hokusai, Houck is widely known for a gorgeous and elegant sensibility which is both playful and quite serious that is uniquely her own.

Wave Series/Tattooed Woman at Sunset Beach
By Masami Teraoka
Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Wave Series/Tattooed Woman at Sunset Beach" is a unique watercolor utilizing Edo-period imagery by contemporary, Japanese artist, Masami Teraoka. The framed artwork measures 22 1/2 x 17 1/2 x 1 in.
This work is an example of Teraoka's icon of cross-cultural exchange as a submersible yet insuppressible individual, striking out on her own with rented snorkel equipment. Her traditional wave-pattern tattoos and resemblance to a Hokusai pearl diver are time-honored devices recognizable from Edo-era ukiyo-e, but here they are the mark of a very up-to-date woman of the world-and a sign of things to come. "In my mind tattoos were taboo, because we associated tattoos with yakuza gangsters in Japan then," the artist explains. "Those were the only people in Japan who had tattoos, to show off their machismo. So when I saw tattoos in this country, it seemed to me to be a really significant attitude that Americans are not really uptight about having tattoos. Thirty years later, tattoos are invading Japan. Young people have them on their arms, so they can cover them with longsleeved shirts. Perhaps they try to hide them from their parents, but the younger generation is much more open to tattoos and piercings."
Born in Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, Teraoka studied at what is now Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. His works are inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcut prints. However, Teraoaka infuses the style and techniques of the traditional art with American Pop Art. The mass-produced nature of Japanese woodcut prints...

Prosper Alphonse Isaac (France, 1858-1924)
Woodblock Print circa 1910
9 x 7 1/8 (15 1/4 x 17 frame) inches
The excellent book "The Great Wave: The Influence of Japanese Woodcuts on French Prints" which was an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1974, recounts the phenomenal "cult of Japan" in late nineteenth-century France and reveals through direct comparisons its particular impact on the graphic work of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Bonnard, Vuillard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Gauguin. This print directly relates to the discovery of Japanese art most notably through the woodblock prints which found their way to the West oftentimes as stuffing or packing materials from consumer goods that were being imported to the West at the end of the 19th century.
Prosper-Alphonse Isaac was born in a well-to-do family. This gave him the means not only of leaving his native Calais to pursue a career as an artist in Paris, but also the means to acquire art. Isaac was particularly drawn to Japanese arts, which he collected avidly. Many of the objects he bought were eventually given to museums. As a printmaker Isaac started drawing seascapes in dry point, but eventually moved on to become one of only a handful of artists versed in color woodcut techniques in France. His compositions, generally small in scale, are heavily influenced by the arts of Japan. He printed small editions of these works. Aside from this artistic activity, Isaac was also an active textile decorator.
"This mark, which he borrows from Hokusaï and Totoya Hokkeï...
