Hudson Yards High Line
By Roland Kulla
Located in Fairfield, CT
Represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC LA -- For the past dozen years or so I’ve focused on bridge elements by selecting portions of bridge structures and painting segments in a realist style. Previous shows at the Billis Gallery have featured New York area bridges using this approach that I call “abstract realism”. This show, New York City Transit, differs in several ways. First, I’ve expanded my focus to include different aspects of transportation in New York City. There are still plenty of bridges, in fact five different views of the Manhattan Bridge. But I’ve added trains to the mix as well as the MTA. A number of the paintings include the interaction of trains and bridges. Pedestrians are given focus too in scenes from the High Line. Second, not only has the subject matter expanded, many of the works provide a more panoramic treatment. There are still some closely cropped subjects that are typical of my previous style. But in several works my view has widened to place the transit elements in their urban context. Third, the transitory aspects of nature are captured as well. The atmospheric effects of sky and water and light and shade create dynamic contrasts to the fixed structures. The bridges in particular leap across the water against dramatic skies. Taken as a whole, New York City Transit takes you from the details to the big picture. It also captures the dynamism of the man-made structures in their dramatic natural context. Roland Kulla September, 2016 Acrylic on canvas, cityscape, painting, New York City, Manhattan, High Line, Hudson Yards

Keeping the Culture, mixed media signed/N print by top African American artist
By Kerry James Marshall
Located in New York, NY
Kerry James Marshall Keeping the Culture, 2011 Silkscreen and linocut in colors with full margins and deckled edges on Arches paper with full margins and deckled edges 20-1/4 x 30-1/4 inches Hand signed, titled and numbered 79/100 by Kerry James Marshall in graphite pencil on the front Published by Africa House International, Chicago Unframed In September, 2025, "Kerry James Marshall: The Histories" opened at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. This major exhibition was the largest presentation of Marshall's work in the United Kingdom and Europe, and featured more than 70 works by the the artist, including a large number of paintings and a selection of prints, drawings and sculptures. Highlights of the show include a new series of paintings that explore the transatlantic slave trade, along with Knowledge and Wonder, a mural commissioned in 1995 by the Chicago Public Library that is the largest painting Marshall has produced. The exhibition at the Royal Academy will then travel to the Kunsthaus Zurich and the Musee d'Art Modern in Paris. Kerry James Marshall's 2011 "Keeping the Culture" is based upon the artist's eponymous painting done the year earlier, which is featured in the Royal Academy Exhibition. In 2013, an original painting, upon which this work is based, sold at Christie's auction. Below is the Christie's Lot Essay for that painting: ..." Set in a revolutionary apartment in the cosmos, Kerry James Marshall's Keeping the Culture optimistically anticipates a future that pays homage to the past. Ushering in a new stage of the artist's output, Keeping the Culture shifts focus from the failed utopia of urban renewal and the commemoration of civil rights era heroes in favor of a more technically refined meditation on the preservation of the traditional and spiritual values that shaped a culture. Placed in an ultramodern environment, two siblings marvel at a projection of the earth--in which Marshall has aptly positioned the African continent toward the viewer-while their affectionate parents dance in the foreground. Overlooking the milky way, Marshall's space-age flat is decorated with earthly relics-wooden tribal sculptures...

Bananas, Jonas Wood, 2021
By Jonas Wood
Located in Draper, UT
The vividly graphic print, Bananas, is the second installment in a series of plant identification prints by the artist. The prints are formatted to the proportions of a classic Polaroid picture, with each featuring a different plant removed from a distinct background and context, like a scientific extraction. Plants have long been a source of fascination for Wood and often appear in his work. This is the artist’s first print depicting the banana tree, which Wood has spent almost a decade exploring through drawings and paintings based on his personal archive of images. A visit to Hawaii further sparked his curiosity into the many different varieties. Jonas Wood (b. 1977, Boston) makes paintings, drawings, and prints in the genres of portraiture, still life, and landscape. His work reflects a personal approach to subject matter defined by his affinities and experiences. Conjuring depth using flat forms––his process involves collage-based studies in which he sometimes works with photographs to deconstruct and reassemble the images––Wood probes the boundaries between the new and the familiar, integrating emotionally resonant material from everyday life. Jonas Wood has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Dallas Museum of Art (2019); Museum Voorlinden, Wassenaar, Netherlands (with Shio Kusaka...

The Smallest Event Unfolds Like a Fate, surrealist landscape oil painting
By Eileen Murphy
Located in New York, NY
Eileen Murphy’s paintings on panels are a mirage of disparate memories. Lived experience, borrowed art historical footnotes, and imagery drawn from literary references swirl together and coalesce into shimmering sylvan scenes. Allusions to Patinir, Jacob von Ruisdael, Frederick Church, lines pulled from Rilke, and Murphy’s own personal history emerge deftly from the same brushstroke. The result is images that are simultaneously foreign and familiar, deeply intimate yet shared in a common vernacular. Murphy builds these compositions from layers of carefully applied oil paint, her brushstrokes growing increasingly specific and nuanced with each new stratum. Because she works on panel, the pigment is not absorbed into the material, but rather, sits atop the surface, the color remaining fully saturated. Without this anchoring effect, Murphy’s landscapes become lofty and voluminous, further intensifying their surrealist quality. Eileen Murphy has spent her life along the Hudson River and has lived in Brooklyn, NY for the last seventeen years. Her current paintings are based on the landscape of Columbia County...
