Impressionist painter A.G. Warshawsky was active in Cleveland, Paris and Monterey, California. Although Warshawsky is known as a classic Impressionist, he is also known for using a realistic style in his portraiture.
Warshawsky was born in 1883 in Sharon, Pennsylvania to Ezekial and Ida Warshawsky, Jewish immigrants from Poland. The family then moved to Cleveland, Ohio. His brother Alexander (Xander) also became an accomplished painter in his own right.

Le Jardin du Luxembourg
By Marie-Anne Nivoulies de Pierrefort
Located in London, GB
'Le Jardin du Luxembourg', oil on canvas, by Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort (circa 1910). Parisians are not equivocal about their park preferences. Some clearly favour the Tuileries, while others stand firmly with feet planted in the Jardin du Luxembourg. Perhaps this is analogous to residents' strongly-held preferences for either the Café Deux Magots or the Café de Flore, just down the Boulevard Saint-Germain. Back to the gardens though, I have always been captivated by the Luxembourg Gardens. It's the lawns, tree-lined promenades, tennis courts, flowerbeds, model sailboats on its octagonal Grand Bassin, as well as the picturesque Medici Fountain...

The collection of Henri Van Kemmel (Lille, 1903-1963) - cousin of Eugenie Prendergast
- Madame Henri Van Kemmel
Maurice Prendergast came with his family to Boston in 1861. Working in a textile store, Maurice Prendergast was at first self-taught in painting, making souvenir cards and shop signs. He went to Britain in 1886, then to Paris in 1891 and registered at the Académie Julian with Jean-Paul Laurens, Benjamin-Constant, and Charles Blanc as teachers, working also with Gustave Courtois at the Académie Colarossi. More importantly he saw the Impressionists’ paintings and the Nabis at the Galerie Durand-Ruel. He returned to the United States in 1895, settling in Winchester (Massachusetts) and went frequently to New York. In 1898 he again went to Europe where he stayed until 1900, visiting Paris, Florence, Siena, Rome, Capri, and Venice, where he spent six months. Between 1907 and the beginning of World War I he went again four times to Europe but never returned there after the war. In New York where he finally settled, with William Glackens, Robert Henri, and John Sloan among others, Prendergast was one of the members ofThe Eight, gathered by Robert Henri to counter the pervading academicism. The group exhibited in 1908 at the Macbeth Galleries and took part in the Armory Show of 1913. After that Prendergast did not exhibit again with the group. In 1914 he left Boston definitively for New York.
Prendergast was in his thirties before he began to devote himself to painting. In his late beginnings he painted in the open air as the Impressionists did, mainly in watercolours with clear brushstrokes and an elegant virtuosity recalling his then admiration for James Whistler and Claude Monet. Between 1892 and 1905 he carried out two hundred monotypes, a technique of which he was the undisputed master in America at that time and which expressed the influence of Japanisme. During his stays in France he painted views of Paris, but also Brittany and Normandy. In this period, in 1896, he was chosen to illustrate My Lady Nicotine by Matthew Barrie. During his third stay in Europe, from 1898 to 1900, he painted in Paris, at Saint-Malo, and mainly in Venice, where, influenced by Vittore Carpaccio he introduced brightly coloured banners into his animated compositions. In oils he painted slowly, touching up his paintings by superimposed brushstrokes, sometimes over several years. He chose to use the divided stroke in an early period, a technique which had similarities with Post-Impressionism. After his travels in Europe and his discovery of Paul Cézanne, he evolved in the direction of the neo-Impressionism of Georges Seurat, placing little dots of colours with a knife, then of the Nabis and even later Fauvism, painting large brushed surfaces in bright colours. After 1899, his Ponte della Paglia in Venice freed itself from strict divisionism, adopting the dense composition in vertically superimposed planes of the Nabis. Like the members of the group of eight, he took his subjects from the daily life of ordinary people, in scenes in the parks or on the beaches of New England, picnics or sometimes circuses. Nevertheless the happy vision that he had of the world separated him strongly from the evolution that led his companions to paint the most miserable and populous milieus, which gave them the name of The Ashcan School. His compositions are arranged in surfaces superimposed vertically, without depth; while the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists were influenced by the layout of Japanese prints, Prendergast was inspired more by Persian miniatures. The decorative elements and the build-up of characters in crowds are placed frontally, like garlands on a tapestry, particularly as he seeks a texture effect, covered entirely by the subject without any empty spaces. His attraction to colours caused him to research all the motifs that he introduced into these compositions: umbrellas, parasols, balloons, draperies. In 1911–1912, he experimented with pastel and treated new subjects, nudes and still-lifes. After 1913, in sympathy with the Symbolists, he put nude figures and everyday characters side by side in the same composition. In his last years, and above all in the watercolours, he discarded the divided stroke and applied larger brushstrokes, similar to the technique of Henri Matisse. Fidelity to the leisurely settings and elegant grooming of the period gave his works, apart from their artistic value, a charming sociological aspect. Singular, almost marginal in his time, his paintings stand out by the density of their composition, in form and colouring, characterised by the accumulation of detail, minutiae of scenery, the serried ranks of people that animate them, the chromatic polyphony of elegance, umbrellas, parasols, and flags. He is a complete painter, particularly generous, who would never be happy to provide only samples of his art. Following Whistler and Mary Cassatt, Maurice Prendergast is one of the most interesting and original Post-Impressionist American painters, and perhaps marks exactly the boundary between the 19th and the 20th centuries.
He was considered to be an ‘old master’ from 1920 on, and his works appeared in very many exhibitions of modern American painting. He had his first solo exhibition in 1897 at the Chase Gallery of Boston, where his works were noticed by Madame Montgomery Sears, who made a collection, taking the advice of Mary Cassatt. In 1915 six paintings and watercolours exhibited at the Carroll Gallery of New York established his success and drew the great collectors to him, among whom were Albert Barnes and John Quinn.

William Merritt Chase (1840-2016)
Born in Nineveh, Indiana Died New York, New York
In 1883 Chase was involved in the organization of an exhibition to help raise funds for a pedestal for the Statute of Liberty. The exhibition featured loans of three works by Manet and urban scenes by the Italian Impressionist Giuseppe de Nittis. Both artists influenced Chase's Impressionistic style that gave rise to a series of New York park scenes. It is also thought that he was influenced by John Singer Sargent's In the Luxembourg Gardens (1879) which was exhibited in New York at this time. Indeed, Chase had met Sargent in Europe in 1881, the two men becoming lifelong friends with Sargent painting Chase's portrait in 1902.
On another European trip in 1885, Chase met James McNeill Whistler in London. While Whistler had a reputation for being difficult, the two artists got along famously and agreed to paint one another's portrait. Eventually, however, Whistler's moods began to grate with Chase who wrote home stating "I really begin to feel that I never will get away from here". For his part, Whistler criticized Chase's finished portrait and, according to Hirshler, "complained about Chase for the rest of his life". While no record exists of Whistler's portrait of Chase; Chase's portrait of Whistler remains a well-known piece in his oeuvre.
In 1887 Chase married Alice Gerson, the daughter of the manager of a lithography company. Though some fifteen years his junior (Chase was 37), he had known Alice for some time through her family's devotion to the arts. The pair, who would enjoy a happy marriage with Alice in full support of her husband's career, settled initially in Brooklyn...

Keying Up - The Court Jester
Etching with drypoint, 1879
Signed in the plate lower left corner (see photos)
Proof before engraved title and engraved names
Printed on thin light golden Japanese tissue paper
In the final state, with engraved titled and typeface engraved artist’s signature below the image
Condition: excellent
Plate size: 6-5/8 x 4-1/4"
According to Pisano, this image was very popular during Chase’s life. It is based on his famous painting, Keying Up-The Court Jester, in the collection of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The painting was created in Munich during the artist’s studies there. It was exhibited in the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia where it won a Medal of Honor and helped establish the artist’s reputation as a leading American painter.
Chase, always conscious of self promotion, created the etching and had numerous impressions printed. He sold them for a modest price to increase his fame. The etching was later published in Sylvester R. Koehler, American Art Review, September 1878. It was for this American Art Review printing that the engraved titled and type face signature below the image were added to the plate.
This example was part of a group of impressions that came down in the Chase family via his daughter Dorothy Bremond Chase, his third daughter. They were acquired at auction in a single auction lot, housed in a paper board folder. The consignor was Associated American Artist’s as they were liquidating their stock prior to closing the gallery.
Dorothy was the subject of Chase’s painting, My Little Daughter Dorothy. C. 1894, in the collection of the Detroit Institute of Arts as well as numerous other portraits of her.
Reference: Pisano/Bake, Volume 1, Pr. 3, illustrates the rare 1st state, this being a 2nd state before any other the engraved title and Chase's name in the bottom margin which are found in the third state.

The pair, who would enjoy a happy marriage with Alice in full support of her husband's career, settled initially in Brooklyn where their first child was born. The couple would parent six daughters and two sons and it was only his family that could rival his devotion to his art. Indeed, Chase often combined his two loves by painting several portraits of his wife and children in Brooklyn parks before the couple relocated to Manhattan.
Later Period
Between 1891 and 1902, Chase and his family spent their summers at a purpose-built home and studio in Shinnecock Hills, a close suburb of the upmarket town of Southampton on the south shore of Long Island (roughly 100 miles east of New York). Chase set up, and taught two days a week, at the nearby Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art which benefitted from the financial backing of local art collectors. It was at Shinnecock that Chase, taken in by the region's striking natural surroundings, painted several Impressionistic landscapes. As Bettis put it, "There, among the dunes, in the bright sunlight and sea air his painterly impulse was given free sway, and he produced some of his freest and loveliest work". His passion for the area was so felt he even gave his daughter Hazel the middle name of Neamaug, in honor of the rich Native American history of Shinnecock. Chase was equally focused on the students that came to the School and who he encouraged to paint in the modern plein air style favored by the French Impressionists.
Although Chase was making a name for himself as an Impressionist, he never abandoned his commitment to the sombre tones and academic tropes he had learned in Munich, though these he reserved for his portraits, and for his series of striking still lifes featuring dead fish. Chase was in fact a successful society portraitist - he painted fashionable women for a fee of $2,000 - and would paint his students as "samples" which he then donated to leading art institutions (such as Lady in Black (1888) which he donated to the Metropolitan Museum in 1891).
In 1896, facing financial difficulties, Chase flirted with the idea of giving up his teaching in New York and traveled with his family to Madrid where he developed a passion for bullfighting. Chase returned however to Shinnecock in June to teach his yearly summer art class, and in the fall of that year, established his own art school in Manhattan: the Chase School which was modelled on the Académie Julian in Paris. Chase lacked business savvy, however, and the Chase School lasted only two years before it was placed under new management. It continued as the New York School of Art (changed to Parsons School of Design starting 1941) with Chase as head the School for eleven more years. Chase also taught during this period at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
In 1902, following the premature death of his friend John Twachtman, Chase was invited to join the Ten American Painters group (who included amongst its members, Frank Weston Benson, Thomas Wilmer Dewing...

Victor Adolphe Thiébaut , born in 1828 and died in 1888 was one of the most illustrious founders of French art. He was the creator of the Art Foundry Thiebaut Brothers ,one of the largest and most prestigious art foundries in France during the 19th and 20th centuries. His achievements are visible throughout the world and especially in Paris. In 1849, after being associated with him, his father Charles Antoine Floréal left him the reins of the family foundry " Thiébaut & Fils ", a company manufacturing loops and medals, cylinders for printing canvas and paper, machine parts steam and other industrial objects made of bronze and copper. Two years later, in 1851, Victor Thiébaut decided to start a new activity of art foundry. He created the "Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry". It is from this time that the house will experience great prosperity and international artistic renown.
Victor Thiébaut was a perfectionist. He believed that the perfection of cast iron was the main point of making a work. This way of thinking earned him the trust, the friendship and the advice of the sculptors of the time. The first works of Victor Thiébaut are exhibited throughout Europe. The London Exhibition in 1862 gave him the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor . That same year, he was elected mayor of the 10th arrondissement of Paris . Over the years, the fame of the Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry enabled the company to produce more and more important works in collaboration with prestigious artists. In 1860, Victor Thiébaut realized his first Parisian work: the fonts of "Agriculture" and the "Work" of Gumery. These works are visible on one of the fountains of the square-Émile Chautemps. In 1861, he produced a monumental work for the city of Paris: the bronze group "Saint Michael slaying the devil" by Duret, installed on the fountain Saint Michel. In 1863, another monumental work installed in the heart of the capital. Victor Thiebaut performs the statue of Napoleon I er , installed at the top of the Vendôme column . The statue was shot down in 1871 and repaired in 1875 by the Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry. Between 1864 and 1899, Victor Thiébaut realized many monumental works, still today, throughout the capital, including " The Triumph of the Republic ", place de la Nation , the "monument to Joan of Arc", place the Pyramids , the "Lioness of the Sahara", the Louvre palace , many works present in the Luxembourg gardens , the Tuileries gardens , the Jardin des Plantes , and in many other places. In 1878, the "Thiébaut Frères Art Foundry" cast the work " Charlemagne and its Leudes ", installed on parvis Notre-Dame . Victor Thiébaut died in 1888, leaving his sons Victor and Jules with orders for the family business. Until his last days, Victor Thiébaut worked on two monumental orders that will be completed and installed after his death. One of the most visible works made by the "Fonderie Thiébaut Frères" was undoubtedly the replica of the "Statue of Liberty", installed on the bridge of Grenelle ( Swan...

The son of a goldsmith, Parisian born Antoine-Louis Bayre was a sculptor of animal subjects and acclaimed, not only for his apparent skill, but as the founder of what became known as the French Animaliers School. Among his patrons were representatives of the state government and royalty including the Duke of Orleans and the Dukes of Luynes, Montpensier and Nemours.
Well compensated financially, he was able to buy the best of materials and hire the country's most skilled foundry craftsmen. The foundry he hired was owned by Ferdinand Barbedienne, and casts from this period were stamped with the letters, FB. However, he did not make a lot of money from his work because he was such a perfectionist that often he would not sell his work because he thought it was not 'quite right'. In 1848, he declared bankruptcy, and his molds and plaster casts were sold along with the copyrights.
Bayre's specialty was aroused, angry seeming wild game such as lions and tigers and elephants, but he also did equestrian groups and mythology figures. In order to do realistic depictions of animal anatomy, he spent much time at the Jardin de Plantes in Paris.
His early training was as an apprentice to a metal engraver, but being drafted in the army in 1812, ended that education. In 1832, he had established his own studio, and unique at that time was his method of cold stamping his bronze casts, so that each one had a special number. He had his first entry, The Milo of Croton...
