During the 1950s he became one of the earliest exponents of Color Field painting. While living in Washington, D.C., Louis, along with Kenneth Noland and other Washington painters, formed an art movement that is known today as the Washington Color Schoo Early life and education From 1929 to 1933, he studied at the Maryland Institute of Fine and Applied Arts (now Maryland Institute College of Art) on a scholarship, but left shortly before completing the program. Louis worked at various odd jobs to support himself while painting, and in 1935 was president of the Baltimore Artists' Association. From 1936 to 1940, he lived in New York City and worked in the easel division of the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project. During this period, he knew Arshile Gorky, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Jack Tworkov. He also dropped his last name. Work Color field painting He returned to his native Baltimore in 1940 and taught privately. In 1948, he pioneered the use of Magna paint—a newly developed oil-based acrylic paint made for him by his friends, New York paintmakers Leonard Bocour and Sam Golden. In 1952, Louis moved to Washington, D.C. Living in Washington, D.C., he was somewhat apart from the New York scene and he was working almost in isolation. During the 1950s he and a group of artists that included Kenneth Noland, Gene Davis, Thomas Downing, Howard Mehring, Anne Truitt and Hilda Thorpe...

Contemporary Art Afternoon May 16, 2007 Sotheby s, 1st Ed
Located in valatie, NY
Contemporary Art Afternoon May 16, 2007 Sotheby's. Published by Sotheby's, NY, 2007. 1st Ed softcover auction catalogue. The Rockefeller name worked its magic at Sotheby’s sale of contemporary art, where a mysterious bearded collector in a skybox outbid five other contenders for Rothko’s “White Center (Yellow, Pink and Lavender on Rose).” The $72.8 million he paid, far above the painting’s $40 million estimate, set records for both the artist and for any contemporary work at auction. Sotheby’s declined to say who the buyer was or where he was from. But the seller was David Rockefeller, the retired banker and chairman emeritus of the Museum of Modern Art, who had decided to cash in on the market and invest the money in other philanthropic endeavors. Seasoned auction goers noticed that last night rubles appeared for the first time on the salesroom’s currency board, along with dollars, euros, pounds and Swiss...

Curved Dimensions, Abstract OpArt Geometrical, Mid-Century Cleveland Artist
By Edwin Mieczkowski
Located in Beachwood, OH
Edwin Mieczkowski (American, 1929-2017) Curved Dimensions, 1965 Acrylic on board Signed, dated and titled verso 30 x 29.75 inches Edwin Mieczkowski, born in Pittsburgh, was a leader of geometric and perceptual abstraction during the latter part of the 20th century. Mieczkowski's work first came to prominence in "The Responsive Eye" exhibition, the nation's first major exhibition of perceptual art, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965. Mieczkowski was also featured in the 1964 article in Timemagazine that first used the term "Op Art" to describe paintings that manipulated visual cues in order to reorder and excite viewers' perceptual responses. With a complex aesthetic that over time has transcended mere tricks of optical art, Mieczkowski has spent nearly four decades producing geometrically paintings, drawings and sculptures, a genre of modern art that is known broadly as perceptual abstraction. His output of static and dynamic forms create a body of work, still largely intact, that uses visually disorienting, meticulously arranged lines, dazzling kaleidoscopic colors, and alluring juxtapositions of hue and tone, to playfully and seductively present new challenges for the viewer's eyes. The desired result is an optical effect of perpetual motion, harmonics and rhythm. . . . Along with Frank Hewitt and Ernst Benkert, Mieczkowski was a co-founder in 1959 of the Anonima* group that worked together in Cleveland and New York and declared itself free from the pressures of the art market and the pursuit of personal fame. Members of Anonima often left their works unsigned and vowed to shun the usual art market venues such as commercial galleries, biennials and competitions. Instead, they engaged in a rigorous, self-imposed program of painting exercises to explore the effects of geometry and color on visual perception. Although Mieczkowski's work hung side-by-side in the MOMA "Responsive Eye" exhibition with such colleagues as Josef Albers, Victor Vasarely, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Carlos Cruz...

Tim Nordin "VIII.1 Study" Signed Acrylic on Canvas Panel, Frameless Presentation
By Tim Nordin
Located in Miami, FL
"VIII.1 Study" BY TIM NORDIN (B. 1945) Acrylic on Canvas over Panel ⚜ Signed ⚜ Frameless Display A VIBRANT STUDY OF COLOR, TRANSPARENCY & STRUCTURE A rare and original acrylic on canvas over panel, Tim Nordin’s "VIII.1 Study" (1976) is a striking example from his renowned Transparent Sumi Brush Mark series. This work is defined by layered organic strokes of deep blues, vibrant greens, and subtle earth tones, forming a rhythmic interplay of color and light. Nordin’s distinctive brushwork creates a composition that shifts dynamically depending on light and perspective, a hallmark of his innovative approach. His technique results in an immersive, pulsating visual field—where each mark remains distinct yet seamlessly integrates into the whole. This meticulous layering and structured spontaneity connect his work to Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, and Color Field painting. This highly collectible piece was exhibited in Nordin’s 1982 Palm Springs Desert Museum exhibition and remains an essential work for collectors seeking dynamic gestural abstraction and structured color play. His work draws inspiration from a wide range of influences, including Mark Rothko, Sam Francis, Josef Albers, Kazimir Malevich, and the Optical Art movement pioneered by Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. While elements of his work reflect the gestural expressiveness of Abstract Expressionism, his approach to composition and structure aligns with Color Field painters such as Morris Louis and Helen Frankenthaler. Born in 1945, Nordin traveled extensively before settling in California, where he studied fine arts at Cerritos College and later earned his MFA at Claremont Graduate School, concentrating on printmaking and experimental painting techniques. Early in his career, he experimented with plexiglass, vinyl, and alternative surfaces, seeking ways to push the boundaries of traditional painting. By the 1970s and 1980s, Nordin became known for his Transparent Sumi Brush Mark series, in which he developed a meticulous method of layering individual brushstrokes to form structured, organic compositions. These works, featuring veils of fluid color and precise gestural marks, evoke the optical depth and rhythmic movement found in Bridget Riley’s Op Art...

"Wildflower" - nature inspired abstract painting, bright colors
By Marina Dunbar
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Wildflower" features hues of pink, yellow, orange, blue, green and purple. Marina Dunbar is inspired by the work of Paul Jenkins and Morris Louis. “I often think about painting in three dimensions, rather than two,” says Marina. “When engaging with the surface, I am considering how the arrangement and folds of the canvas will influence the composition.” Her process is as rooted in the physical construction of form as it is propelled by the medium’s inherent fluidity. The title of her exhibition – Fluent Form – refers to the practice of exploring opposing concepts, such as density and fragility, continuity and impermanence, within the same material. As one progression leads to the next, Marina studies the medium without premeditation, remaining sensitive to nuances within her process. Marina has introduced natural elements such as dry pigments and sand into these paintings. Sand is a physical object, yet its existence is a representation of the passage of time. It is the result of rock erosion, and it is a material that continually assembles into new patterns. In the Buddhist tradition, sand is used to convey beauty and ephemerality through the construction and subsequent destruction of mandalas...

Abstract Color Field Red Purple Gradient Aquatint Etching California Minimalism
By Joe Novak
Located in Surfside, FL
"Voices IX" Aquatint Etching • Image: 12”x 14” • Paper: 30”x 22” • 2001 Hand signed and numbered 2/2 on BFK Rives paper. Joe Novak (1930-2019) California Contemporary Minimalist. His work is about the exploration of color and light through abstraction, with tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. His artistic background and work link him closely with the first generation abstract expressionists of the New York School. Major influences include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, and his mentors, Peter Busa and Esteban Vicente, whom he met and befriended during the eighties while living and painting in East Hampton. During the nineties, while living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Novak initiated a project called "Light Emanations", in which he created digital computerized programs of changing light levels and configurations on a selection of his large paintings, dramatically illustrating the effect of light changes on color perception. Novak's body of work is extensive and include painting on canvas, panel and paper as well as monotypes, drawings, assemblages, mixed media and prints. He has often worked in series, focusing on a particular medium for years. Among these are "Meditations" (color pencil drawings), "Voices" and "Voices 2" (color aquatint etchings), "Echoes" (painting assemblage with minerals) and "Colors" (350 miniature panel paintings). In recent years his paintings have become more gestural, often with musical allusions. Color Gradient, Abstract Art, Land Art. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. Critic Christopher Knight wrote, Novak is an unabashed Color Field painter. His paintings and aquatints at Bert Green Fine Arts — the Santa Fe artist's third show there — feature works that will call to mind abstractions as diverse as those by Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko and Morris Louis and the landscape abstractions of Joe Goode. Novak's work is in many public and private collections, including numerous museum collections. He spent his last years living in Palm Springs. Jack Knox RSA (1936-2015) was one of the most influential artists to work in Scotland in the second half of the twentieth century. Born John Knox to a family of tailors in Kirkintilloch, Knox studied at the Glasgow School of Art (1953-57) where his drawings were noted for their mature draughtsmanship. After graduating, Knox went to Paris to attend the atelier of Cubist artist, André L’Hȏte. During his time in Europe Knox digested the various art movements of the moment, including Surrealism, Tachisme, Colour Field and Pop Art. Visiting the great museums, he was particularly interested in Analytic Cubism and Georges Braque’s intimation, rather than description, of object. He also went to Brussels to visit the first major show of American Abstract Expressionism in Europe. He returned to Scotland eager to establish his own style, drawing on everything he had seen in Europe. In 1960 the Glasgow Herald presented an exhibition during the Edinburgh Festival of young artists from the west of Scotland. Knox was selected to show alongside George Devlin, Carole Gibbons, Anda Patterson, Douglas Abercrombie and Duncan...
