This romantic and lovely Alabaster marble is classic Jose De Creeft who was a world recognized stone sculptor carver. He has a remarkable career and story. And this work is what he is best known to do. Female form that has face and form emerging from rougher hewn areas of the stone. The established collection is known for exceptional Postwar works including pieces by Johns, Rothko, and Twombly, to name a few. As Hannelore Schulhof stated in 2011, “Art is almost like a religion. It is what I believe in… it is what gives my life dimension beyond the material world.” Signed: J. De Creeft in the rear The stylized, placid face of Ecstasy, as well as the contrast between smooth and rough-hewn stone, are typical of de Creeft’s hand and instantly recognizable. Its natural alabaster inclusions and the generally fragmentized feel of the piece are both essential to its aesthetic and classic de Creeft. The Guadalajara-born sculptor studied alongside Rodin at the Académie Julian starting in 1905 and would eventually become Alexander Calder’s tutor in direct carving. Ecstasy was undoubtedly inspired by a wide variety of influences that had a profound effect on his work, including his early employment at the young age of six earning pennies by carrying stones to aid the construction of Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia, and an inspiring encounter with Inuit sculptors in Madrid’s El Retiro Park during the nascency of his career. Towards the mid-20th century, de Creeft was working within a group of Spanish expatriate artists in New York, including Vicente and Dalí. 1956, the year he carved Ecstasy—using the method of direct carving of which he was a firm proponent—marked the year he gained representation at the Contemporary Galleries in New York City. He would exhibit biannually there until 1966. In the 1950s de Creeft received numerous public commissions, including an eight-foot granite Poetess for the city of Philadelphia in 1951 and his famous 16-foot Alice in Wonderland climbing sculpture...

This piece is unsigned. Irving Lehman (1900-1983) was an American Jewish painter, sculptor, engraver, and designer. Born in Kiev in then Russia, Lehman studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union and the National Academy of Art and spent much of his working life in New York City. Part of the Abstract Expressionist school, he worked in oil and watercolor as a painter and in metal and steel as a sculptor; his works have been shown in galleries in England, France, Italy, Israel and Japan, and were included in an international traveling exhibition in Europe in 1951. Like many other artists of his generation, he painted for the WPA and then adopted a more abstract style after WWII. Lehman spent much of his career in NYC. He had his first exhibition at ACA Gallery in 1934. He also exhibited at the Whitney, National Academy, PAFA, Brooklyn Museum, Chicago Art Institute, and others. Olaf Wieghorst (1899 - 1988) California, New York, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas Artist Image Size: 20 x 24 Frame Size: 29.5 x 33 Medium: oil "Home Corral" Dated 1946 Biography Olaf Wieghorst (1899 - 1988) Born in Viborg, Denmark, Olaf Wieghorst was a child acrobatic performer from the age of nine when he began appearances at Tivoli Theater in Copenhagen and later toured Europe. He also learned horseback riding working on a stock farm, and horses became a major focus of his admiration and later his painting. In 1918, he arrived in the United States, having worked as a cabin boy on a steamer. He served in the 5th U.S. Cavalry on the Mexican border in the days of Pancho Villa. He later recalled a favorite horse from that period and said that riding through El Paso in 1921, the horse fell on his ankle and broke it. The outfit was heading to Douglas, Arizona, and not wanting to be left behind with his injury, he stayed on the horse which carried him all the way through the New Mexico desert on one of the hottest days of the year. The horse died during the night, having expended all his energy on saving Wieghorst. He later wrote that when the Cavalry discarded the use of horses, "they took the soul out of that great branch of the service" ("Widening Horizons"). He wandered extensively through the West sometimes on horseback, finding work in Arizona and New Mexico as a cowboy. Then he went to New York and served as a mounted policeman until 1944, spending most of his time on a horse named Rhombo patrolling the Central Park bridle paths and saving many people injury from runaway horses. He began painting in his spare time, and he was successful enough that his work was represented by the Grand Central Art Galleries of the Biltmore Hotel. In 1944, he settled in El Cajon, California. His paintings include cowboys, horses, and Indians in landscape, but there is little if any collectible art of his done during his early days in the West. His primary output came after his return to California when he began painting cowboys and horses extensively. He did numerous horse portraits, spending time on ranches studying their unique personalities. He painted celebrity horses including Roy Rogers' Trigger, Gene Autry's Champion and Tom Morgan's stallion. He was a large, powerful, handsome, and very personable man. Living in California by the end of WWII, he began a career that spiraled to success, in part due to his engaging personality. Charles Green Shaw Happening, 1964 Signed and dated on verso Oil on board 8.75 x 6 inches Charles Green Shaw, born into a wealthy New York family, began painting when he was in his mid-thirties. A 1914 graduate of Yale, Shaw also completed a year of architectural studies at Columbia University. During the 1920s Shaw enjoyed a successful career as a freelance writer for The New Yorker, Smart Set and Vanity Fair, chronicling the life of the theater and café society. In addition to penning insightful articles, Shaw was a poet, novelist and journalist. In 1927 he began to take a serious interest in art and attended Thomas Hart Benton's class at the Art Students League briefly in New York. He also studied privately with George Luks, who became a good friend. Once he had dedicated himself to non-traditional painting, Shaw's writing ability made him a potent defender of abstract art. After initial study with Benton and Luks, Shaw continued his artistic education in Paris by visiting numerous museums and galleries. From 1930 to 1932 Shaw's paintings evolved from a style imitative of Cubism to one directly inspired by it, though simplified and more purely geometric. Returning to the United States in 1933, Shaw began a series of abstracted cityscapes of skyscrapers he called Manhattan Motifs which evolved into his most famous works, the shaped canvases he called Plastic Polygons. The 1930s were productive years for Shaw. He showed his paintings in numerous group exhibitions, both in New York and abroad, and was also given several one-man exhibitions. Shaw had his first one-man exhibition at the Valentine Dudensing Gallery in New York in 1934, which included 25 Manhattan Motif paintings and 8 abstract works. Best known for his industrial, waterfront scenes of New York between 1930-1970, Berger effortlessly captures a period when the technology and landscape of the city was rapidly changing. Although he paints scenes of a bygone era, Berger draws inspiration from the waterfronts near his home in New York’s Hudson River Highlands as well as historical sources in museums. Berger holds BFA and MFA degrees from Alfred University.
