"Sid Vicious Arrest" black and white photograph by Allan Tannenbaum. Image size: 9 x 13 inches. The text to the right of the photo reads: "Sid Vicious New York City 1978. At about 11 a.m. on October 12, 1978, the desk clerk at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City received a call from outside the hotel. A man, who did not identify himself, told the clerk, 'There's trouble in room 100.' The desk clerk called for an ambulance which arrived with a police escort. After the paramedics confirmed the woman was dead, police checked the room and found drugs and drug paraphernalia as well as a blood-stained Jaguar K-11 folding knife with a five-inch blade and a black jaguar carved into the handle. The couple had registered as Mr. and Mrs. John Ritchie, though they were not married. Simon John Ritchie was the man's real name, better known as Sid Vicious, punk superstar and former bass player for the infamous British band, The Sex Pistols. The minimalist image features a pyramid form oscillating in an enclosed space outlined by a square. A dramatic dimensional work with layered “screens” of color in light blue and black colors.
Patrick Berran’s practice relies on the transformation of visual materials though a process of constant experimentation and recycling. The artist employs various transfer techniques to evolve his original source material into abstract forms, revealing the subtle textures embedded within their surfaces. The resulting patterns have become Berran’s signature form, which he transcribes, layer upon layer, into his painted compositions. Throughout his work, frames and deconstructed grids punctuate his dense patterning to create a frenetic rhythmic quality aligned with the fast-paced and stripped-down audio experience of punk rock music.
Patrick Berran lives and works in New York, NY. He received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 and his MFA from Hunter College, New York in 2006. He has had solo exhibitions at HUNTER / WHITFIELD, London; White Columns, New York; and Chapter NY. Artist Biography: Mark Flood is a contemporary American artist. Working in an irreverent interdisciplinary practice, Flood’s work strives to critique society, specifically targeting the art market and its institutions. Among his best-known works is his Lace Paintings series, consisting of technically inventive and delicate compositions. For these works, Flood lays down several overlapping layers of paint onto canvas, creating the illusion of intricately detailed lace. Born in 1957 in Houston, TX, he went on to attend Rice University in Houston and do work throughout the 1970s while playing in the punk band Culturcide in his native Houston. Getting his start designing concert posters and flyers, Flood credits Joseph Cornell as an inspiration for his approach to collage and appropriation. He has exhibited with Zach Feuer gallery in New York, and his work can be found in the collections of the Modern Art Museum of Forth Worth, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Menil Collection...
