In 1969 he set up his own studio and by 1971, he was the official photographer for the British music magazine Disc & Music Echo. His first assignment for them that year was to photograph Mick Jagger in London. From the editorial work for Disc and Music Echo, Sounds and later Smash Hits & Q magazine amongst others, to the 1973 tour with The Rolling Stones that led to a long-standing relationship working with the band, Michael has shot prodigiously including for major record labels including CBS, Warner, Elektra, Polydor, Columbia Records and EMI. Relocating to New York in 1977, it was here that Michael founded the photo agency, Retna. It has been said that Michael photographed everyone from Abba to Zappa … when looking at his archive this is actually true. Now living in East Sussex, recent 2016 exhibitions include “Off The Record” at The Lucy Bell Gallery in Hastings showing images both on and off stage including previously unseen contact sheets; whilst Ono Arte in Bologna, Italy is hosting a David Bowie show. Autumn 2014 saw Michael’s 50 year retrospective at the Getty Gallery in London: “A life in Music, 50 Years On The Road”. Snap Gallery in London’s Piccadilly Arcade regularly have a selection of Michael’s work on show. Michael continues to shoot the artists he most admires – likely to be jazz, classical and world musicians, who have always provided an alternative narrative to his rock music portfolio. “It has been a fantastic ride through an incredible period of music history, which combined my two great loves … music and photography. Little did I appreciate, when my Uncle Alan encouraged my photography back in the 1950s, that this would lead me to photographing nearly all of my heroes … and thrilled to be still finding new ones. A great never ending journey.” Michael Putland About The Who : Few rock & roll bands were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notorious live performances demonstrated: Keith Moon fell over his drum kit while Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey prowled the stage as bassist John...

Naomi Campbell and Viv Westwood colour 35 x 24 limited edition print
Located in Norwich, GB
David Koppel served his photographic apprenticeship in the rough-and-tumble world of the Fleet Street paparazzi in 1980’s London when his skills captured the very essence of the Me Decade that gave birth to the celebrity culture of today. Koppel’s classic photographs of Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton & the Royal Family appeared in every major newspaper and magazine and marked him out as that rarity amongst press photographers: the artist with a camera. Building on the reputation gained through the photographs for the book Still Waters, his black-and-white portraits of ordinary people now rank among the many famous names in his portfolio. Koppel also went one better and in 2002 bought the St Giles St Gallery , bringing the best of local and international contemporary art and photography to Norwich, including the works of Sir Peter Blake, Terry O’Neill, David Bailey, Maggie Hambling, Storm Thorgersson, Tim Woolcock...

"Untitled", Inked Profile, Museum Glass, Custom Frame, Mixed Media, India Ink
By Lester Johnson
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Untitled” painted in India Ink of two heads was done during what has been call Lester Johnson’s Dark Paintings of the 1960s. In 2013 John Yau wrote with much insight about that period of Johnson’s work - “Lester Johnson (1919-2010) was an innovative figurative painter who has never quite fit into any of the accepted narratives of postwar American art, and that alone makes his work worthy of a longer look. The 1960s was an explosively turbulent era marked by assassinations, race riots, space flights, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Beatles’ and Rolling Stones’ first American tours, and the rapidly escalating Vietnam War. Everyone was wary and on edge. Meanwhile, in the New York art world, all eyes were fixated on the rise and triumph of Pop Art, Minimalism and Color Field painting. Johnson was one of the few artists that attuned to the dismay that everyone was feeling during the violent and schizophrenic time, the sense that it could all come crashing down. However, his work was never overtly political or didactic. While his dark, brooding, monochromatic paintings of anonymous men gained a small and loyal following, they also became part of that largely invisible history of a time when New York was a tough scary and exciting place to be. More than fifty years after they were made, Johnson’s Dark Paintings continue to retain a coarseness that we associate with gestural Abstract Expressionism and Jean Dubuffet’s anti-psychological, anti-personal portraits incorporating sand and gravel. One sees in them the antecedents of Joyce Pensato’s gestural exaggerations of Groucho Marx, Homer Simpson and Minnie Mouse. While Pensato brings an infectious humor to her work, Johnson was more somber. I cannot help but think that both these artists chose their bedraggled subjects out of empathy and a trace of identification.” Lester Johnson, was born in 1919 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended Minneapolis School of Art, where he studied under Alexander Masley who was a former student of Hans Hofmann. Johnson continued his artistic career in New York City where he opened his first studio on 6th and Avenue A. His neighbor there was fellow painter Wolf Kahn. During his time there he would share a loft with Larry Rivers and married the art historian Josephine Valenti. In 1961 he briefly taught at Ohio State University before returning to New York City to share a studio with Philip Pearlstein. Jack Tworkov would invite Johnson to teach at Yale, an offer that Lester Johnson would accept and spend the rest of his life in Connecticut. Johnson passed away in 2010. Johnson's work has been exhibited in the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, The Walker Art Center, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This work has been framed inside of a custom frame with museum glass...

Unique Peter Blake AA Road sign on sheet metal - signed
By Peter Blake
Located in Norwich, GB
This is a metallic AA road sign used to direct traffic to parking. In keeping with Blake's idea of 'Found Art', in which he uses art found in streets, rubbish dumps, antique shops and discarded items, turning them into works of art, this was an original road sign used for Blake's 2008 exhibition at The Saint Giles Gallery in Norwich and found by a customer and returned to the gallery during the show. Blake came to the closing of the show rather than the opening where he signed the sign. This is a unique item. One off. Heralded as the ‘Godfather of Pop Art’, Sir Peter Blake was knighted in 2002 for his invaluable contribution to contemporary art. Blake began his career creating collages from photographs, cigarette packets and matchboxes. This new approach to the creation of visual art – taking found imagery from Pop culture – was spearheaded in Britain by Blake and continues to inspire contemporary artists today. Best known for creating the iconic cover to the Beatles’ 1967...

Steven Wolfe Original Bronze Bookends, Ed. 2/3
Located in New York, NY
Steven Wolfe (American, 1955-2016) Untitled (Book Bookends), 1990 Bronze 6 1/4 x 7 x 4 inches Stamped: SW 1990 2/3 For more than two decades, Steve Wolfe (1955–2016) created sculptures and drawings of astounding craft and visual presence. Wolfe re-created worn books and used records, primarily from the 1960s and 1970s, that influenced his own personal and artistic sensibilities. Working in the tradition of trompe l’oeil, Wolfe created pieces that quite literally “fool the eye” on first inspection. Using a variety of materials and processes, including oil, acrylic, screen printing, lithography, modeling paste, canvas, wood and aluminum, Wolfe sculpted and painted precise and exacting three-dimensional replicas of books and records that possess a personal significance. Iconic titles include Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Dostoyevsky’s Notes From Underground, Alfred Barr’s Cubism and Abstract Art and The Beatles’ Revolver...

Where There Is Love There Is Life Offset Print, Pop Art, Signed, 2010
By Mr. Brainwash
Located in Draper, UT
Controversial L.A. “street artist”, Mr. Brainwash takes to the New York City art scene with the opening of his “Icons” show in the meat packing district on Sunday February 14th. First brought to the public eye when LA Weekly profiled the artist in a cover story, Mr. Brainwash continues to be a much-discussed figure as the star of infamous street artist Banksy’s documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop”, which premiered last month at the Sundance Film Festival. Thierry Guetta or “Mr. Brainwash” jam packed his massive art Icons show into two floors of a 15,000 square foot space. The show features portraits of pop culture icons; Madonna, Obama, Michael Jackson, James Brown and the Beatles, among many others, all interpreted through old broken records placed on canvas and silk screens with touches of spray paint.
