1980s Vintage American Street Scene Painting, Landscape with Taxi Cabs
By Val Lewton
Located in Surfside, FL
Val Edwin Lewton (May 23, 1937 – April 24, 2015) was a painter and museum exhibition designer. As an artist, he created Realist acrylic paintings and watercolors of urban and suburban scenes, predominantly in the Washington, D.C., area, where he lived and exhibited. Val Lewton was born May 23, 1937, in Santa Monica, California. His father, also named Val Lewton, produced a string of successful and influential B movies for RKO Pictures, including Cat People (1942) and I Walked with a Zombie (1943). His mother, Ruth Knapp, was a painter and teacher of autistic children. He graduated in 1959 from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and earned a master's degree in fine arts from Claremont University in 1962. After moving to Washington, D.C., he served on the staff of the Smithsonian American Art Museum for 32 years, simultaneously maintaining a career as a painter in his own right. Lewton died in 2015s oon afterwards, exhibitions of his paintings were planned for the Katzen Arts Center (June 17 – August 13, 2017) and Addison/Ripley Fine Art (June 3 – July 8, 2017). Chiefly known for his landscapes, Lewton generally depicted cities and suburbs with a detached, impersonal sensibility. Writing about his watercolors in Arts magazine in 1980, Harry Rand observed, “Either by implication or statement, personalities are absent from Lewton’s work; there is hardly a sense of the lives that move through those spaces he describes.” The critic compared the artist to Fairfield Porter, Edward Hopper, and Charles Sheeler. Lewton painted from a young age. On a family trip to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, he discovered the work of Henri Matisse, an encounter that permanently influenced his artistic vision. In the early 1960s, Lewton lived in southern California and taught art classes at the University of California Riverside. During this period, he was inspired by the paintings of Roger Kuntz...

Apples and Glass, super real, illustionistic, colorful contemporary still life
By Douglas Newton
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil paint on canvas Doug Newton’s hyper-real paintings observe reality, explore translucency, reflections and luminosity, and dazzle the viewer with all the ways light can transform our perceptions. His subject matter concentrates on still lives of food, toys, candy and household objects. In addition to many group shows across the country, Mr. Newton’s show, “HARD CANDY and other confections” represents his fifth solo exhibition. His paintings have been collected in numerous private collections. Mr. Newton resides in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Sonia Coman writes in her essay, Doug Newton’s hard candy: the confection of painting Doug Newton’s paintings are about… painting. The hyperrealist technique of trompe l’oeil or “trick the eye” is knowingly playful. It simultaneously calls attention to the illusion of a different material—for example, translucent candy wrappers—and the reality of the layers of paint, masterfully applied to the canvas. In that, Newton’s paintings pay homage to an esteemed series of trompe l’oeil masters, from Inquisition-era Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán to Gilded-Age American painter William Michael Harnett...

“The Kindly ones ”, Triple Portrait World Map Doves Symbolist Oil Painting
By Andrée Bars
Located in Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Titled "The kindly ones" and by Andrée Bars, this oil painting on canvas captures a striking combination of realism and fantasy, depicting three female faces gracefully positioned against a serene background. Each face is distinct, offering a different perspective and expression, perhaps symbolizing various facets of human emotion or thought. Behind them, a beautifully detailed world map stretches across a globe, emphasizing themes of global connection and exploration. The atmosphere is further enriched by the ethereal presence of white doves, which are universally recognized symbols of peace. These elements coalesce into a surreal yet harmonious composition that invites viewers to ponder the deeper connections between humanity and the world at large. The overall effect is both captivating and thought-provoking, showcasing the artist's skill in blending the real with the symbolic to evoke introspection and wonder. Andrée Bars is a French painter. Having been strictly trained for 4 years by the American hyper-realist painter Mr. Ted Seth Jacobs, who himself inherited 19th century masters’ skills from his own professor, Andrée Bars learned the profession of painting in its purest tradition. "Each Has Its Destiny", Snails in Nature Symboliste Oil Painting
By Andrée Bars
Located in Clermont-Ferrand, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Titled "Each Has Its Destiny," this charming symbolist oil painting on canvas by Andrée Bars offers a serene and contemplative view of nature's delicate balance. The composition features three snails navigating their way across a barbed wire fence, set against a backdrop of a lush meadow under a clear blue sky. The snails, each with distinctively colored shells – one brown, one dark, and one golden – symbolize individuality and the unique paths each creature takes in life. The barbed wire, often associated with barriers and challenges, contrasts with the gentle and slow movement of the snails, suggesting a journey filled with obstacles yet approached with patience and determination. The bamboo stalks and various wildflowers in the background add a touch of whimsy and natural beauty, emphasizing the coexistence of fragility and resilience in the natural world. The delicate rendering of the leaves and flowers, along with the meticulous depiction of the snails, showcases the artist's attention to detail and mastery of texture. The painting's soft lighting and subtle color palette evoke a sense of calm and introspection, inviting the viewer to reflect on the theme of destiny and the slow but steady progress each individual makes despite life's challenges. "Each Has Its Destiny" is a poignant reminder of perseverance and the unique journey every being undertakes, rendered with elegance and sensitivity. Andrée Bars is a French painter. Having been strictly trained for 4 years by the American hyper-realist painter Mr. Ted Seth Jacobs, who himself inherited 19th century masters’ skills from his own professor, Andrée Bars learned the profession of painting in its purest tradition.
