The present work - Takiguchi's own piece, a lenticular double portrait - combines Rrose Sélavy's signature with Man Ray's 1930 profile of Duchamp. Its subject, Marcel Duchamp, then signed this work in pencil. Its title, "Rrose Sélavy in the Wilson-Lincoln System", refers to Duchamp's Green Box note describing a two-way, changeable portrait of presidents Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson. Rrose Selavy is, famously, Marcel Duchamp's pseudonym and alter ego. Duchamp died before Takiguchi's book was completed, so this print is one of the very last graphic works that has been hand signed by Marcel Duchamp. It was published in Japan, and is a very elusive work stateside. Another edition of this work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. In 1904, he joined his artist brothers, Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp-Villon, in Paris, where he studied painting at the Académie Julian until 1905. Duchamp’s early works were Post-Impressionist in style. He exhibited for the first time in 1909 at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in Paris. His paintings of 1911 were directly related to Cubism but emphasized successive images of a single body in motion. In 1912, he painted the definitive version of Nude Descending a Staircase; this was shown at the Salon de la Section d’Or of that same year and subsequently created great controversy at the Armory Show in New York in 1913. Duchamp’s radical and iconoclastic ideas predated the founding of the Dada movement in Zurich in 1916. By 1913, he had abandoned traditional painting and drawing for various experimental forms, including mechanical drawings, studies, and notations that would be incorporated in a major work, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915–23; also known as The Large Glass). In 1914, Duchamp introduced his readymades—common objects, sometimes altered, presented as works of art—which had a revolutionary impact upon many painters and sculptors. In 1915, Duchamp traveled to New York, where his circle included Katherine Dreier and Man Ray, with whom he founded the Société Anonyme in 1920, as well as Louise and Walter Arensberg, Francis Picabia, and other avant-garde figures. After playing chess avidly for nine months in Buenos Aires, Duchamp returned to France in the summer of 1919 and associated with the Dada group in Paris. Sonia Delaunay - Composition Original Lithograph 1972 Dimensions: 32 x 25 cm Revue XXe Siècle Cahiers d'art published under the direction of G. di San Lazzaro. Sonia Delaunay was known for her vivid use of color and her bold, abstract patterns, breaking down traditional distinctions between the fine and applied arts as an artist, designer and printmaker. Born Sarah Stern on November 14, 1885 in Gradizhsk, Ukraine, she was adopted in 1890 by her maternal uncle, Henri Terk, a lawyer in St. Petersburg, where she grew up, exposed to music and art, and learning several foreign languages. In 1903, she moved to Germany to study drawing with Ludwig Schmidt-Reutler (1863–1909) at the Karlsruhe academy of fine arts; Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951), composer-to-be, was among her classmates there. In 1905, she traveled to Paris where she attended art classes at the Académie de la Palette, learned printmaking from Rudolf Grossman (1889–1941), and met Amédée Ozenfant (1886–1966), André Dunoyer de Segonzac (1884–1974), and Jean-Louis Boussingault (1883–1943). Sonia spent much of her time at exhibitions and galleries in Paris, which showed works by Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, and Edouard Vuillard, as well as Les Fauves, Henri Matisse and André Derain. She did, however, maintain contact with Germany, exhibiting at the Galerie Der Sturm, Berlin, in 1913, 1920 and 1921. During her first year in Paris, Sonia met the German collector and art-dealer, Wilhelm Uhde (1874–1947), whom she married on December 5, 1908, and whose Montparnasse gallery, the Galerie Notre-Dame des Champs, showed her first solo exhibition. Through Uhde, Sonia encountered many painters, including Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Maurice de Vlaminck, and Robert Delaunay (1885–1941). In 1910, Sonia divorced Uhde by mutual agreement, married Delaunay that same year, and gave birth to their son, Charles, in January 1911. Together Sonia and Robert Delaunay pursued the study of color, influenced by theories of Michel-Eugène Chevreul (1786–1889). He grew up in New York where he completed his studies. Here he works in 1908 as a draftsman and graphic designer. In 1912 he began to sign his works with the pseudonym "Man Ray", which means ray man. He buys his first camera in 1914, to photograph his works of art. In 1915 the collector Walter Conrad Arensberg presented it to Marcel Duchamp, with whom he would become a great friend. The three founded the Society of Independent Artists. In 1919 he painted his first airbrushes, images produced with an airbrush, a commonly used retouching tool for a graphic designer. In New York, with Marcel Duchamp he formed the American branch of the Dada movement which began in Europe as a radical rejection of traditional art, but was not very successful. In 1921 Duchamp returned to Paris and Man Ray followed him. In Paris Duchamp introduced him to the most influential artists of France, including André Breton and Philippe Soupault. Soupault hosted the first exhibition of Man Ray in his library, where the famous work Cadeau was exhibited. Man Ray's Parisian success is due to his skill as a photographer, especially as a portraitist. Famous artists of the time, such as James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau and many others, posed in front of his camera.
