Erik Gunnar Asplund, “GA9” Wall Lights for ASEA, Sweden 1940s
By Lisa Johansson-Pape, ASEA, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Hans Bergström
Located in Munster, NRW
With its organically shaped blown glass shade, especially rare in this opaline frosted glass version, the GA9 resembles a floating droplet. Designed by Swedish architect Erik Gunnar Asplund, widely regarded as the godfather of Swedish modernism, this lamp embodies his signature geometric clarity and structural ingenuity. Like his Stockholm City Library, it balances simplicity with innovation. A bent arm holds the glass, while another secures the light source at the luminaire’s center. The black lacquered metal curves organically, contrasting with polygonal backplates—an interplay of geometry and fluidity that defines Asplund’s vision. The large, mushroom-like shades diffuse light in a soft, mesmerizing glow, enhancing the atmosphere beyond mere functionality. Asplund’s influence extended to Scandinavian design icons such as Alvar Aalto, Erik Bryggman...

A Pair of "GA9" Wall Lights by Erik Gunnar Asplund for ASEA, Sweden 1940s
By Erik Gunnar Asplund, ASEA
Located in Utrecht, NL
“GA9” appears to be inspired by a droplet, floating upward the wall. The mouth blown glass with bubbles creates an intricate play between light and shadow, giving the appearance of light travelling through water. Swedish architect and designer, Erik Gunnar Asplund, is celebrated as the godfather of functionalist design in Sweden. Like his celebrated Stockholm City Library, these lamps emphasize geometric simplicity and clarity of form. The construction of this model is ingenious, with a bent arm holding the glass in place, with yet another arm holding the light source in the centre of the luminaire. The black lacquered metal bends organically into sinuous forms, while the backplates have a polygon shape. Pairing the geometric elements with the more organic ones shows Asplund’s great eye for design that was well ahead of his time. The large, mushroom-like mouth blown glass shades have distinctive “drops” on their surfaces, creating a beautiful effect that becomes even more apparent when the light is on. The atmospheric light it creates is not measurable, nor is it functional in the traditional sense. It is easily forgotten, but nevertheless important when creating a space of wellbeing. It is the most basic and fundamental of all lighting principles, one that has been with us since the dawn of time. Asplund’s life and work served as inspiration to a number of Scandinavian design luminaries, such as lifelong friend and mentee Alvar Aalto, as well as Erik Bryggman...

Erik Gunnar Asplund Göteborg 1 Chair For Cassina
By Erik Gunnar Asplund
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Erik Gunnar Asplund Göteborg 1 Chair For Cassina The Göteborg solid wood design chair is the conceptual representation of Rationalism by the Swedish architect who designed the furnishings for the Gothenburg Town Hall. The rounded slightly convex curves are reminiscent of the stylistic features of the Bauhaus school. This chair also echoes a tribute to the legendary Thonet chair No. 14, among the early examples of design furniture on an industrial scale. PADDING Cold processed polyurethane foam. LEGS Solid ash. UPHOLSTERY Fabric or leather. The Göteborg chair is Erik Gunnar Asplund’s poetic interpretation of Rationalist ideas. The chair was commissioned for the extension of the Town Hall in Göteborg, Sweden, whose warm, wood-panelled rooms are evoked in its ashwood frame. The curved and slightly convex profile recalls Bauhaus designs. In this case, though, Asplund keeps the back and legs the same width. We also see an homage to the historic Thonet No. 14 chair, one of the early examples of industrially manufactured furniture. Exceptional Hans Asplund Armchair, Walnut and Leather, Nordiska Kompaniet, 1955
By Hans Asplund, Nordiska Kompaniet
Located in The Hague, NL
This exceptionally rare armchair was designed by Hans Asplund around 1955. Asplund designed the chair for the beauty salon at the Nordiska Kompaniet department store on Hamngatan in Stockholm. The chair was reportedly produced solely for the salon in a few examples, please see the last 2 images of the listing to view the chairs in their original interior. Adding to the historical importance of this particular chair on offer is the fact that it comes from the private collection of Hans Asplund himself. The design is marked by the beautiful, sculptural frame, which has been entirely executed in solid walnut wood. The curved lines of the armrests, the legs and the backrest give the design a refined and elegant appearance. The seat, backrest and armrest are upholstered in brown leather. The chair is in very good, restored condition. Provenance: Architect Hans Asplund (1921-1994). Thence by descent to his son, diplomat and UN ambassador Bo Asplund (1950-2024). Thence by descent to the previous owner. Literature: Ingegerd Henschen & Stig Blomberg, "Svenskt Möbellexikon", Förlagshuset Norden AB 1961, pp. 162-163. Filippo Alison...

Easy chair designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden 1955
By Hans Asplund
Located in Stockholm, SE
Easy chair designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden, 1955. Walnut and leather. This rare easy chair, designed by Hans Asplund for Nordiska Kompaniet in 1955, exemplifies Swedish mid-century modern design. Custom-made for the beauty salon at NK’s flagship department store in Stockholm, only six chairs were made and never offered for retail sale. Asplund’s collaboration with NK often involved site-specific furniture, tailored to complement the interiors of the store or other commissioned spaces. This particular chair highlights Asplund’s focus on functionality and elegance, featuring the walnut frame with elegant, flowing curves that define its sophisticated design paired with cognac leather upholstery. Hans Asplund (1921–1994) was a prominent Swedish architect and designer, belonging to the renowned Asplund family of architects, which included his father, Gunnar Asplund, one of Sweden’s most celebrated architectural figures. Hans Asplund is best known for his contributions to Swedish modernism, blending functionality with elegance in both architecture and furniture design. Provenance Architect Hans Asplund (1921-1994). Thence by descent to his son, diplomat and UN ambassador Bo Asplund (1950-2024). Thence by descent to the present owner. 1960s Pendant of opaline glass by Erik Gunnar Asplund for Atelje Lyktan, Sweden
By Erik Gunnar Asplund, Ateljé Lyktan
Located in København K, 84
The "Parachute" pendant, designed by the eminent architect Erik Gunnar Asplund for Atelje Lyktan in Sweden during the vibrant 1960s, is a captivating embodiment of mid-century modern design ethos. Crafted from frosted opaline glass adorned with chains of matte green metal, this luminaire stands as a testament to Asplund's ingenuity in merging industrial materials with innovative forms. At first glance, the pendant's name, "Parachute," evokes notions of weightlessness and suspension, echoing the graceful descent of a parachute in mid-air. This choice of nomenclature subtly hints at the design's intention to evoke a sense of airy elegance and fluidity. The pendant's material composition is crucial to its aesthetic appeal and functionality. The frosted opaline glass diffuses light...

"GA9" Wall Lights by Erik Gunnar Asplund for ASEA, Sweden 1940s
By ASEA, Erik Gunnar Asplund
Pairing the geometric elements with the more organic one shows Asplund’s great eye for design that was ahead of his time. The large, mushroom-like mouth blown glass shades have distinctive “drops” on their surface, creating a beautiful effect that becomes even more apparent when the light is on. The atmospheric light it creates is not measurable, nor is it functional in the traditional sense. It is easily forgotten, but nevertheless important when creating a space of wellbeing. It is the most basic and fundamental of all lighting principles, one that has been with us since the dawn of time. Asplund’s life and work served as inspiration to a number of Scandinavian design luminaries, such as lifelong friend and mentee Alvar Aalto, as well as Erik Bryggman and Arne Jacobsen. An acronym for Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget (“General Swedish Electrical Limited Company”), ASEA was a Swedish manufacturer of electrical products and industrial infrastructure. The company endures in the hearts of design lovers for their mid-century interior lighting collections produced in collaboration with venerated designers like Gunnar Asplund. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The metal structure has some marks and scratches. Dimensions: 10.23 in W x 15.74 in D x 10.62 in H 26 cm W x 40 cm D x 27 cm H About the designer: Erik Gunnar Asplund, born in Stockholm in 1885, was a Swedish architect, mostly known as a key representative of the Nordic classicism...
