On offer here is an elegant English mahogany writing box dating back to the late 19th century, around 1880. The box, with gently rounded upper corners, was crafted from solid pine wood and then veneered with rich mahogany. At the center of the lid, there is an inlaid oval piece of mother-of-pearl, complemented by a matching mother-of-pearl escutcheon surrounding the keyhole. The box retains its original hinges, locks, and key, all in excellent working condition.
When opened, this sophisticated writing box reveals a sloped leather writing surface, crafted from green-dyed sheepskin leather and adorned with a decorative gold-leaf border. The writing surface folds open on both sides, offering hidden storage space beneath for letters and documents.
This writing box has been gently cleaned in our workshop, ensuring it is pristine, complete, and fully functional—a timeless piece of craftsmanship ready to be admired and used.

The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The pelican in Christian art is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity. Many early painters and carvers mistakenly represented it more similar to an eagle (much like in this antique church relic), and not as a natural pelican which is why most people today still are a bit confused at first when this stunning hand carved, symbolic bird is called a pelican.

Lavishly hand decorated in Imari palette with colours of Iron Red and Cobalt Blue with gilt on an off-white ground, each rim with four projecting Lion's heads ending on four paw feet on a shaped base.
Condition: Superb condition for such early items, light wear to gilding at high points and some staining inside, evidence of gilt overpainting on one cover, see image. Both bases with iron red mark for circa 1815.

Made in Paris, France, circa 1910, exceptionally executed, exquisitely detailed throughout and displaying brilliant hand painted rich coloring, with a unique pierced beak, realistically modeled with wings slightly open perched atop a naturalistic tree stump base, Signed, underglaze blue crossed arrows mark to lower tree trunk.
What truly stands out and is absolutely remarkable is how the maker/artist manged to make this work appear like a completely different sculpture depending on the angle it's viewed from.
History:
Paris Porcelain (Porcelain de Paris), a term that conjures images of grandeur, elegance, and sophistication; is to France what Dresden Porcelain is to Germany. Porcelain by a variety of makers from a region rather than one maker, it's the collective name given to the various porcelain studios and decorating workshops within and around Paris, France. In this case and many others Porcelain de Paris is also as good if not sometimes better than Dresden, Meissen or Sevres porcelain and is certainly a collectible to look out for.
The Bourdoir and Bloch factory was originally founded around 1820 and specialized in producing fine quality porcelain in the style of the famous 18th century factories. This most distinctive figural bird was made by the Paris porcelain factory of Bourdoir and Bloch around 1910.
This example bears the August 8, 1887 registered trademark of two blue crossed arrows, used around the time that Eugene Marx Clauss had joined forces with Achille Bloch and Leon Bourdois (who were both collaborators of Samson) and were operating under the name Clauss Co from 1887-1890 in the small factory started by Eugene's grandfather Jean-Marx Clauss in 1788 on rue de la Pierre-Levee in Paris.

This is a very interesting old copper vase, believed to have been made in Japan or China. Its distinctive shape and high level of decoration make it a gem that stands out among the many copper vessels I have seen.
The body is cylindrical, with a tightened shape at the top and bottom. The legs are slender and tapered, giving the overall design a beautiful sense of tension. This “tapered hem” design lends a special elegance to the vase's appearance.
In terms of decoration, the intricate patterns encircling the upper and lower bands are particularly striking. These patterns are geometric abstractions of clouds and dragons. On both sides, small designs resembling animal or dragon faces are attached, adding to the elegant decorative beauty of the design.
The copper surface has a deep amber luster from years of use, and the patina from aging captivates the viewer's heart. There are some dents and signs of use on the surface, but these are also charming elements that testify to the fact that this vase has been cherished and used for a long time.
When half-filled with water and left for 24 hours, no leaks were detected. It is practical and can be used as a flower vase. Whether filled with fresh flowers, branches, or dried flowers, it will add a sense of sophistication to any space and make a statement wherever it is placed.
