By Salimbeni, Giorgio Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Rectangular table box with rounded corners in sterling silver 925/1000 gold plated with a beautiful hand-engraved and fire-enamelled frame and in the center a beautiful hand painted miniature by the painter Beatrice Mellana reproducing the painting by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres "Odalisque with slave". Dimensions cm. 9.5 x 12.3 x 3.3. Weight gr. 671. Designed by Giorgio Salimbeni in 1979 and manufactured in Florence in numerous specimens with various subjects and different colors, in the headquarters of the Salimbeni Company with completely manual execution by artisan artists with thick slab and large reinforcements suitable for withstanding numerous enamelled firings at about 800° C. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. hand painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl. Table Box Enamel on Guilloche Hand Painted Miniature Sterling Silver Salimbeni
By Salimbeni, Franco Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Square box in 925/1000 sterling silver gold plated with translucent fired enamel on guillochè also on the sides. In the center, a beautiful hand painted tempera miniature on a vegetable ivory plate depicting the portrait of a 19th century lady, signed by the painter Anna Maria Manfriani. Dimensions cm. 12 x 12 x 2.5. Weight gr. 618. Designed by Franco Salimbeni in 1976 and manufactured in Florence in some specimens with various subjects and different colors, in the headquarters of the Salimbeni Company with completely manual execution by artisan artists with thick slab and large reinforcements suitable for withstanding numerous enamelled firings at about 800° C. Fire enameled miniatures: On a first layer of enamel generally white or very clear or even transparent suitably liquefied at a temperature of about 750 ° C, the chosen subject is painted using miniature colors which are as many colored crystals, ground and reduced to a very fine, almost impalpable powder washed and purified in distilled water with the addition of small quantities of deoxidizing acids which, diluted with essential oils (usually essential oil of solder), can be mixed to form a palette of colors. With very fine sable hair brushes you draw the subject starting from the perimeter and then gradually adding various layers of color. It is necessary to carry out various firings very often so that the colors harden and are not absorbed by the underlying glaze as, during the subsequent firings at 750 ° C, during liquefaction, it would spread irremediably. Hence the need to form the painting a little at a time, cooking it numerous times. Therefore it is necessary to proceed with numerous retouching, often overlapping different colors that only the painter's experience knows. A beautiful miniature needs from 20 to over 50 firings and is finished when the painter deems he does not have to further intervene. Some colors must have darker tones than others because then, by superimposing the transparent enamel placed at the end of the miniature, they fade. This transparent layer, called “fondant” in jargon, must be smoothed and polished like all other translucent enamel colors. The miniatures with water tempera colors are painted on real ivory...

A Wedgwood Fairyland lustre bowl designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones ca. 1925 and decorated with the 'Blue Willow' pattern. Thomas Minton is credited with creating the standard pattern as we know it today circa 1780; from there, all the major English potteries, and some American ones, began producing ‘Blue Willow’ transferwares...

Sue et Mare for Orfèvrerie Gallia / Maison Christofle, Art Deco Jug c.1925
By Christofle, Sue et Mare
Located in Bath, GB
A highly sought-after silver plated jug designed by the famous French designers (see below) Louis Süe and André Mare for the Orfèvrerie Gallia / Maison Christofle c.1925. Just back from our silversmith's workshop, it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory; any shading are reflections; minor wear to the interior commensurate with age and use. A magnificent piece of history and as relevant for today's interiors as it was nearly 100 years ago. Excellent condition spanning 7 1/2" handle to spout x 4" x 7" tall. Any black marks seen on the body of the jug / pitcher are shadows not marks. Item: 44016 FREE Worldwide Registered Airmail Directly From the UK Sue et Mare The spirit of collaboration was alive in the age of Art Deco. No duo quite exemplified this ideal more than the one known as Süe et Mare. Taking their knowledge of fine art and their shared experiences in the war with them, Louis Süe and André Mare were able to shape trends in the shift from Art Nouveau to Art Deco and beyond. Their designs, inspired by Cubism, excited the Paris Salon of the time and remain relevant even today. Louis Süe was born in Bordeaux in 1875 to a wine merchant and his wife. Drawn to the arts, Süe abandoned a path which would have led him into the École Polytechnique to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in 1893. There he studied painting as well as architecture design, and in 1902 was able to exhibit with a number of his contemporaries in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. After working in various Parisian artists’ workshops and spending time in Vienna (where he was introduced to Cubism), Süe joined L’Atelier Français, an interior design firm made up of a number of his contemporaries, and where he first met André Mare. André Mare was born in the Norman town of Argentan in 1885. Feeling stifled by his conventional upbringing, he left in 1904 to enroll in the École des Arts Decoratifs. In 1906, Mare also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, showing his furniture design and setting himself apart as a leader among his cohort. In 1912, along with Marcel Duchamp and others (and concurrent to his involvement with L’Atelier Français) Mare created La Maison Cubiste, a section at that year’s Salon d’Automne dedicated to radical interior design. The outbreak of the First World War briefly interrupted the two men’s collaboration. Süe was drafted into the French Army and served in the Greek campaign. Mare, meanwhile, developed new camouflage techniques for the French, British, and Italian armies using his knowledge of Cubism. But this function did not keep him from the front. In 1916, he was wounded by shrapnel in Picardy while helping establish a lookout post, and in the same year was awarded the Military Cross by George V of England. In 1919, Süe and Mare resumed their professional relationship by cooperating with Gustave Jaulmes on designing the victory celebrations in Paris for the war’s end. The next year the pair founded the Compagnie des arts français, focusing on creating designs for furnishings and interior accessories. While adhering to the Art Deco style, their designs were more conventional, harking back to the Louis XIV and earlier periods, and less focused on geometric intricacy. Highly decorative, their pieces featured flair such as sculpted floral and fruit motifs, scalloped edges, and inlays of ivory and mother of pearl. Working primarily as decorators and furniture designers, Süe and Mare did find time to continue participating in exhibitions, particularly the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, where they constructed an actual museum of contemporary art. Other projects included the booth for the Ambassade de France and the interiors of the steamship SS Île de France.

Lalique, "St-Hubert" Decanter, France 1980s
By Lalique
Located in PARIS, FR
Beautiful St-Hubert decanter by the Lalique Maison. Stopper with decorations of oak tree leaf. Signed Lalique France. In very good condition. Secure shipping. The Lalique Maison was created by René Lalique who was one of the greatest artists of his time, whether as a jeweler or master glassmaker. He marked the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods with his unique style. Lalique is recognized as one of the most important jewelry designers and glass maker of the French Art Nouveau period, creating innovative pieces for Samuel Bing's new store in Paris, Maison de l'Art Nouveau. He began exhibiting his work under his own name as early as 1894, notably at the Salon des artistes français, 1897 and 1898. The great glassmaker Émile Gallé discovered him at the first one and praised him highly. His Stand at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris was a great success. While keeping sources of inspiration from the Art Nouveau woman, fauna and flora - including the peacock, various insects and sometimes a fantastic bestiary - he innovated by using materials barely used for jewelry at the time: glass, enamel, leather, Horn, mother of pearl, often preferring semi-precious stones to precious stones. The introduction of volume in jewelry is facilitated by his knowledge in modeling. He designed his models, having them made by a team of chisellers, sculptors and enamellers that he carefully recruited. Many women from the nobility, the bourgeoisie and the entertainment world began to wear his extraordinary jewelry, such as the Marquise Arconati-Visconti, the Countess of Béarn, Madame Waldeck-Rousseau, and Sarah Bernhardt, for whom he created a stage costume in 1902 for the revival of the play Théodora at the Sarah-Bernhardt Theater. Lalique was the only modern artist whose client and friend Calouste Gulbenkian became. Gulbenkian acquired the famous Pectoral à la libellule (circa 1897-1898), a masterpiece much admired at the 1900 World's Fair, which he lent to the tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt. After the end of the First World War, Lalique's colorful and fantastic jewelry were no longer in fashion. The creator sensed this and decided to convert to the Art Deco style through glassware in 1920. Thus, the neo-classical and geometric Art Deco replaces Art Nouveau. According to Olivier Mauny, former CEO of Lalique, his creations paved the way for an industrialization of art objects, because one of the best ways to include luxury and aesthetics in everyday life is to make everyday objects. He will create many objects such as vases, cups, candlesticks, perfume bottles, radiator caps for the Citroën 5CV (1925), decorations for the restaurant cars of the Côte d'Azur Pullman Express (1929), decorations for the dining room of the first class of the Normandie liner...

Cigarette Case Fired Enamel with Still Life Miniature Sterling Silver Salimbeni
By Franco Salimbeni, Salimbeni
Located in Firenze, FI
Rectangular table cigarette case with rounded corners in sterling silver 925/1000 gold plated with beautiful miniature fire enamelled and hand painted by the painter Beatrice Mellana reproducing a "still life" by the Flemish painter Willem Claes Heda. Dimensions cm. 5.7 x 9 x 1.7. Weight gr. 174. Designed by Franco Salimbeni in 1969 and manufactured in Florence in numerous specimens with various subjects and different colors, in the headquarters of the Salimbeni Company with completely manual execution by artisan artists with thick slab and large reinforcements suitable for withstanding numerous enamelled firings at about 800° C. Miniature is a very ancient technique which consists of painting works in small proportions. It was born for the decoration of the first letter of the paragraph of the books. Over the years, however, this technique is refined and enriched, then moving on to precious personal items. Hand-painted miniatures can be done with multiple different techniques. The most important that we use on our articles are of three kinds: 1) Fire enamel. 2) Water tempera on an ivory plate. 3) Painted on mother-of-pearl.
