Nothing short of a masterpiece of craftsmanship, the Cab Lounge armchair is perfectly suited to both residential or contract use. The leather upholstery fits the tubular steel frame like an exquisitely tailored garment, complementing the curves, in a perfect symbiosis between the structural and the organic. The eleven leather sections, hand-stitched and fitted with four zipper closures, undergo fourteen hand-executed processes before they are complete. Fitted with a reclining mechanism, the five-spoke base sets off the entire chair, while the ergonomically correct design renders it extraordinarily comfortable; the care taken in the details is without equal. He received the Golden Compass Award eight times and 25 of his works are in the permanent design collection of the New York MoMA, which dedicated to him a personal retrospective in 1987. He was editor of Domus magazine (1985-1991). He has designed countless art, design and architecture exhibitions over the years, both in Italy and abroad: among the latest those at Palazzo Reale with Giotto's masterpieces (2016) and - at the Milanese Museo del '900 - the one dedicated to Margherita Sarfatti (2018-2019). In 2015 the Milan Triennale awarded him the Gold Medal for his career in architecture and in 2017 dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him. The same exhibition that will be organized again in Moscow in March 2019. Since 1991 he is Royal Honorary Designer of RDI. Since the 1980’s Mario Bellini, dedicating himself almost entirely to architecture, has designed numerous kinds of buildings including the Portello Trade Fair district in Milan, the Villa Erba Exhibition and Convention Centre in Cernobbio (Como), the Tokyo Design Centre in Japan, the Natuzzi America Headquarters in the United States, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Deutsche Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt, the City History Museum of Bologna, the Department of Islamic Art at the Louvre in Paris, the new Milan Convention Centre - the largest in Europe - and in Rome-Fiumicino the new international Airterminal T3 has been completed, while the new Headquarters Generali Group in Trieste has just been inaugurated. This is Esosoft ? the first project by Antonio Citterio for Cassina ? a modular sofa that embodies the timeless elegance and style the Italian designer is known for and, at the same time, is an aspirational tribute to the art of the great masters and to the practice of visualizing furniture by detaching the structural part from its padded interior. In fact, Esosoft consists of an aluminium exoskeleton and a shell with an organic silhouette upon which soft cushions are placed. Past and future coexist in this shape ? reminiscent of the concept of casual comfort typical of the 1960s ? that benefits from cutting-edge production techniques, mindfully chosen to make the system circular and sustainable. Thanks to the work of Cassina LAB, materials like a polyurethane foam that contains a percentage of polyols deriving from biological sources and blown recycled PET fibre in the backrest cushions. The first recognition of his work came in 1948, when he won the Gran Premio at the 8th Triennale. After that came almost forty years of activity with other prizes and awards in recognition of Magistretti’s work in various sectors in different countries. Giving lessons and lectures in various faculties of architecture and schools of design in Italy and abroad, from Milan to New York, from Paris to London, a city to which he is particularly devoted, he has been an “Honorary Fellow” of the Royal College of Art since 1983. Furniture, lamps and other objects that he designed may be found all over the world and the most important design museums have given exhibitions in his honour and kept examples of his work in their permanent collections. Magistretti’s research has been continuous - into design, the culture of the project and innovative experimentation with materials and space solutions, not to mention shapes and functions far from the rigours of fashion that they have passed through during the years.
