This unique architect's desk was designed by Frits Spanjaard in 1932. With its generous proportions, striking asymmetry, contrasting woods and the large knobs in solid Macassar ebony, the desk can be considered as an important example of the Haagse School (The Hague School) style. The desk has four large drawers on the right, which can be simultaneously locked with a single key. The interior on the left features six drawers and additional storage, and can be locked altogether as well. Particularly noteworthy are the four cleverly incorporated pull-out shelves of different dimensions creating additional space: two on the front, one on the right side and one large shelf on the back side. The desktop is executed in dark stained oak and features a dark grey leather insert. in 1932, the prosperous Van Stolk & Reese company commissioned Spanjaard to design the interior and furniture of their offices located on the Ceintuurbaan in Rotterdam. This custom desk was most likely designed for the office of the company’s director, which was designed by Spanjaard in a radically modernist way, combining his own sumptuous designs with the functionalist tubular steel furniture made by W.H. Gispen. Between 1925 and 1935 the work of Spanjaard was strongly connected to the Haagse School movement of which he’d become a main proponent. This style was not so much inspired by the Classic European Art Deco capitals such as Paris and Vienna but more by other national and international architectural developments such as the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The influential magazine Wendingen published a series of articles on Wright still relatively unknown at the time in 1925 and the renowned architect Jan Wils also played an important role in the orientation towards Wrights work in The Netherlands. In its particular application of geometric shapes, primary colours and its sophisticated cubist division of the surface, the Haagse School designers were also aware of De Stijl movement, lead by contemporaries such as Gerrit Rietveld and Piet Mondriaan. At the same time the geometry, the harmonious proportions and the understated decorations were primarily based on the rationalist design principles of H.P. Berlage, who would later become one of Spanjaard’s clients himself. Design had to meet the functional demands of the user but purely utilitarian ideas were certainly not the most important. Due to his frequent travels to Germany, Spanjaard was also familiar with the designs of Marcel Breuer and Mies van der Rohe, especially appreciating the simplicity and purity of their designs. In 1967, Pierre Chapo presented new creations at the Salon des Arts Ménagers, exhibiting the B17 bookshelf for the first time. The B 17 is fixed to the wall, freeing up considerable floor space. The bookshelf, whose presence surprises by its discretion and elegance, comes in several versions of differing lengths and heights. The harmony of the lines between the uprights and the shelves (in 50 mm sections) is accentuated by the originality of the support system. Supports, as their name implies, normally prop up the shelves of a piece of furniture or else the jutting parts of buildings. Marvelous Late 20th Century Modern to Art Deco Revival Entertainment Arbus Armoire 6000 Series by Henredon composed of 2 piece top lower sections with book matched burl wood frames, cast bronze pulls, 2 removeable adjustable wood shelves, and 4 drawers. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if it has been refinished or restored. Specifically, Top removable shelf has some flaws from use so its top was sanded and painted black, but it is above eye level so will never be seen. My, what a HANDSOME HENREDON cabinet!!! Folks, there are plenty of cabinets in this world BUT every now and then (And NOT very often!) you come across an EXTRORDINARY vintage Henredon piece like this and it simply takes your breath away!!!! WOW!!! This is a STUNNING Entertainment Arbus Armoire 6000 Series by Henredon Furniture composed of two pieces, an upper and lower section with each of these sections comprised of beautiful book matched burl wood frames bearing a SPECTACULAR starburst pattern illuminating from behind the lovely cast bronze handles that meet in the upper lower corners of each of the four doors. The doors open to reveal an inside storage space with two removeable adjustable wood shelves in the center of each section and two fixed wood shelves, one created by the cabinet connection and the other in the lower section above four drawers with carved handle pulls. So, technically you have four shelves to use for storage!! The cabinet features upper and lower audio/video ventilated knockouts (that have never been knocked out,) and has two small circular convenient cord cut outs on the lower left corner of each section AND it comes with electrical supply cords. If you use it as an entertainment center or cabinet simply take out the removeable shelves and you have the perfect place for a large television, computer or monitor, gaming components, other electronic supplies. After a lengthy period of research and development, ably assisted by state-of-the-art technology, the company’s designers created a production prototype of the original 1940 piece that architect Franco Albini made as a one-off for his Milan home. Respecting the authentic underlying concept of the design, with its compelling experimental feel, as well as its surprisingly spare, linear looks, today’s model preserves the minimal ideal of the original: a feeling of air and light so that the books and objects seem to float free.
