Large Antique Italian School Oil on Canvas Painting Apparition of Mary to James
Located in Lisse, NL
Large size antique Gothic Art painting 'The Apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint James'. We are by no means connoisseurs when it comes to antique paintings, but we have seen enough antique paintings to know when something is special, decorative and truly inspiring and interesting to look at. And the large size of this antique work of art, makes it impressive too. Also, because it must have taken one very skilled painter an awful lot of time (probably weeks, if not months) to hand-paint this famous religious scene. According to ancient local tradition, on January 2nd of the year AD 40, the Virgin Mary appeared to James on the bank of the Ebro River at Caesaraugusta, while he was preaching the Gospel in Iberia. Looking at the perfectly painted ancient landscape and the kneeling figure who is in awe of what he is witnessing (by the river bank) we believe this is in fact the apparition of Mary to James. Following that apparition, by the way, St. James returned to Judea, where he was beheaded by King Herod Agrippa the first (in the year AD 44). Judging from the skillfully painted individuals in the Renaissance Style and the striking and lively colors, we believe, this late 1800s painting is the work of a true artisan. This work of religious art on the back reads 'Sacerdote Salvatore Rosa, Dipinse 1889' which means Priest Salvatore Rosa, Painted 1889. This priest clearly had a god given talent and god bless him for having created this masterpiece. Apart from some minor imperfections this large and nostalgic painting is in very good condition and we believe it will look particularly great in a church, monastery or chapel. At the same time, a one of a kind antique like this will ofcourse also look great atop the stairwell of a mansion or in the entry hall of a French castle etc. We don't know the 'exact' value of this large size antique painting...

Grid of French Renaissance Artistic Designs, Published in 1887
Located in Langweer, NL
Title: Grid of French Renaissance Artistic Designs, 1887 Description: This compilation features nine prints from the French Renaissance, illustrating the intricate typographic decorations, model printing, tapestry, and architectural ornaments that characterized the period. These prints are detailed engravings of various decorative arts, including textiles, stonework, and wood carvings, showcasing elaborate patterns and vibrant colors typical of the era. Maker and Publication: These prints were created by Heinrich Dolmetsch and are part of "Der Ornamentenschatz," a collection published in 1884 by Julius Hoffmann in Stuttgart. This work is an exhaustive encyclopedic compilation that includes a variety of European artistic styles and is highly valued for its precision and attention to historical detail. Attractiveness and Decorative Appeal: - Complexity and Detail: Each print is filled with complex geometric patterns, organic forms, and figurative representations that are meticulously crafted. - Historical Accuracy: The authenticity in the depiction of Renaissance motifs appeals to both historians and art lovers. - Aesthetic Diversity: The collection showcases a wide range of colors and designs, from monochrome engravings to polychrome decorations, making each print visually unique and appealing. - Cultural Significance: These prints not only serve as decorative art but also provide insights into the cultural and artistic practices of the French Renaissance, reflecting the period’s social values and aesthetic preferences. These elements make the prints not only valuable pieces of historical documentation but also highly decorative artworks suited for both scholarly study and aesthetic enjoyment. The prints from Heinrich Dolmetsch's "Der Ornamentenschatz" utilize **chromolithography**, a method for making multi-color prints. This technique became very popular in the 19th century for its ability to produce vivid, detailed, and colorful images. It involves using multiple lithographic stones, one for each color, and was especially prized for its effectiveness in replicating the textures and hues of a wide range of materials, including the lustrous quality of gold. How the Gold Highlights Were Achieved: The gold highlights in these prints likely utilized a technique within chromolithography where a special gold ink or a layer of finely powdered bronzing was applied. This method can mimic the shimmer of real gold: - Gold Ink: Made from various components, including a metallic powder suspended in a medium, gold ink can be used to print directly onto the image areas intended to look gilded. - Bronzing: After printing an adhesive layer, finely powdered bronze is applied, adhering to the sticky areas and producing a gold-like effect when the excess powder is removed. These techniques enabled Dolmetsch to replicate the opulent and intricate designs typical of the French Renaissance with a realistic metallic sheen, adding richness and depth to the prints and enhancing their decorative appeal. When searching for prints like those in Heinrich Dolmetsch's "Der Ornamentenschatz," particularly those with intricate Renaissance designs and metallic highlights, people often use the following keywords: 1. **Chromolithography Prints** 2. **Renaissance Art Reproductions** 3. **Antique Art Prints...

18th-19th Century Oil on Canvas "The Triumph of Venice" After Paolo Veronese

The original of this painting hangs in the Palazzo Ducale, Venice. The 'Ricci' coloration suggests a late 17th-early 18th century date. Frans Franken III 16th Century Oil on Wood, Adoration of the Magi, Painting
By Frans Franken the Younger
Located in IT
Frans Franken III and aid, Adoration of the Magi Good condition The oil painting on wood, with a gold background, depicts an Adoration of the Magi. The Magi are dressed in sumptuous silk and brocade dresses; they wear precious hats and jewelery. The richness of their garments is in contrast with the humility of the Holy Family and of the other characters who, around curious, observe the scene. The hut is simple, made of wood and straw: above it shines the Comet, symbol of the divine event. In the distance, a group of wayfarers walk along a path that is lost on the horizon, blending into the gold of the bottom. The representation proposes a traditional iconography, in which the painter inserts some details that he lends himself to symbolic interpretations. Among these is the appearance of the Magi, who from the XIVth century differs iconographically: the wise astronomers represent the homage to Jesus of the then known parts of the world, namely Africa, Asia and Europe. To the right of the Magi, in the foreground, sits a monkey, considered a demonic creature and a symbol of lies and sin. It is depicted on the sidelines, as a defeat, next to a fragment of a classical column: ruin alludes to the end of paganism, of the old world that collapses with the advent of the new one, marked by the birth of Christ and liberation from the Original Sin. On the ruins he climbs the ivy, symbol of the immortality of the soul. The work is attributable to the workshop of the Flemish painter Frans Francken III...

German Renaissance Landsknecht Costumes 1500s – Set of 6 Antique Prints, 1880
Located in Langweer, NL
Germany 1500–1600, Set of Six Antique Hand-Colored Renaissance Costume Prints This exceptional set of six hand-colored costume plates presents a richly detailed visual history of German dress between 1500 and 1600, a century marked by artistic transformation, political upheaval, and the dramatic rise of the Landsknechts—Europe’s most flamboyant mercenary soldiers. Produced by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G. in Berlin after designs by Max Tilke, the series forms a cohesive and chronologically focused group illustrating both military and civilian fashion at the height of the German Renaissance. Plate 121 (1500–1525) introduces early Renaissance styles through richly dressed townspeople, artisans, and vividly attired Landsknechts in striped hose, puffed sleeves, and slashed fabrics. Their bold silhouettes and vibrant colors reflect an era that embraced display, individuality, and martial confidence. Plate 125 shifts attention to educated and urban society. Nobles, scholars, patricians, and elegantly dressed women appear in fitted gowns, fur-lined robes, tall hats, and structured outer garments typical of pre-Reformation Germany. This plate captures the rising influence of civic authority and intellectual life in cities such as Nuremberg and Augsburg. Plate 128 brings us deeper into mid-16th-century fashion, featuring court musicians, entertainers, and courtiers in short doublets, decorative hose, lightweight cloaks, and feathered caps. A second grouping includes finely dressed nobles and diplomats, highlighting the refinement and ceremony of German court culture. Plates 133, 134, and 135 together form an extraordinary triptych of Landsknecht fashion. These soldiers became famous across Europe for their exuberant and unconventional dress—massive slashed sleeves, multicolored fabrics, puffed shoulders, dagger-cut openings, exaggerated hose, and feathered hats. Represented here in various ranks and roles, the Landsknechts illustrate not only military history but also one of the boldest and most influential costume styles of the Renaissance. Their outfits remain some of the most recognizable in European fashion history. As a complete six-plate group, these prints present a compelling narrative of German Renaissance society—its militarism, its artistic ambition, and its richly diverse clothing traditions. The hand-coloring across the set is bright and consistent, showcasing atmospheric tones, strong contrasts, and careful attention to detail. Few collections display this level of completeness and visual harmony. Ideal for collectors of European history, early modern military culture, historical costume, or decorative antique prints with strong visual presence, this series also suits interior designers seeking classical themes, warm palettes, and refined historical character. Condition report: All six plates are in very good antique condition with gentle age toning and minimal edge wear. Image areas are clean and colors remain vivid. Plate numbers and captions clearly present. No tears, staining, or repairs. Framing suggestion: For a striking installation, frame the six plates in matching dark-stained or walnut frames with warm cream mats. They display beautifully in two rows of three, or as a vertical series of paired prints. Their strong color palette and rhythmic compositions create a dynamic yet elegant wall display. Technique: Hand-colored lithographs Maker: Max Tilke, printed by Ernst Wasmuth A.-G., Berlin, c.1880 Keywords: German Renaissance costumes, 1500s German clothing, Landsknecht soldiers, antique costume print, hand-colored lithograph, Max Tilke, Ernst Wasmuth Berlin, Renaissance fashion Germany, 16th century attire, historical dress Germany, court fashion 1500s, German nobles costumes, artisan clothing Renaissance...
