Pair of Tole Chargers - From the Collection of Ann Gordon Getty
Located in Scottsdale, AZ
Fabulous pair of late 18th century English-Tole, Japanned chinoiserie, Charger Plates owned by Ann and Gordon Getty. Hand-painted, stenciled, and gilded floral motifs in brown, gold, and black hues. Part of the personal collection of Ann and Gordon Getty, purchased at Christie's South Kensington Auction on June 25, 1997; Lot 687. A treasured find for collectors and enthusiasts of unique and one-of-a-kind pieces with a story to tell! Ann Getty was a paleoanthropologist, arts patron, interior designer, author, and one of America’s most legendary tastemakers. She married Gordon Getty, the 4th son of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, billionaire philanthropist and classical music composer. They were chic, intellectual, San Francisco socialites, who spent a lifetime supporting and advocating for the arts, music, science, and education. The J. Paul Getty Museum, Getty Center, and Getty Villa exhibit J. Paul Getty’s private art and antiquity collections, the J. Paul Getty Trust fund is the world’s wealthiest art institution. Anne was raised on a farm in northern California, then graduated from UC Berkeley with dual degrees in biology and anthropology. She worked on and passionately supported archaeological digs in Ethiopia and Turkey, searching for human fossils and artifacts, studying genetics and DNA structures. She was unpretentious, hands on, physically and intellectually in synch with scholarly scientists, craftsmen, and artists. There’s a photo of her restoring an ancient buffalo’s fossilized horns at the National Museum of Ethiopia. These very same personality traits and mannerisms, her curiosity, keen eye, and great attention to detail are apparent in her approach to collecting furniture, art, textiles, pottery, etc. She spent decades fully immersing herself, studying international art and antiques, first a student, then connoisseur. She knew the provenance and story behind every piece she bought. She taught herself by observing, experimenting, and absorbing everything. She employed artists that became her greatest teachers. Before launching her interior design firm, she hired legendary designers, Albert Hadley and Sister Parish, and John Stefanidis to design her San Francisco estate in Pacific Heights, an early 1900’s sprawling Italianate mansion with views of the golden gate bridge, designed by architect Willis Polk. The estate was nicknamed the “San Francisco Embassy” for its lavish political and cultural parties. Shortly after opening her interior firm, she launched The Ann Getty House Collection, offering original and authentic furniture reproductions from her own collections and inspiration, produced by Luis Rossi, of L. Rossi Antiques...

Brunschwig and Fils Boscobel Restoration Medford Inn 1804 Hand-Printed Wallpaper
By Brunschwig Fils
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Brunschwig and Fils Boscobel Restoration Medford Inn 1804 hand-printed wallpaper. Very unusual paper - it is marked as custom hand-printed for the Boscobel Restoration, Inc. with a copyright date of 1977. The Boscobel Restoration is a rebuilt historic mansion (see images 9 and 10) in Garrison, NY using salvaged parts of an original Federal-period home that was demolished in the 1950s. This is a historic pattern, marked on the paper as "Medford Inn, 1804" and a registered design of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. The Medford Inn (see image 11) was built in 1804 and became known as a well-known hotel located on Main Street in Medford, Massachusetts. The design of the paper hearkens back to Roman tradition of wall decoration, with a trompe l’oleil effect that mimics ornate panelling and stone inlay. As per the this paper was also produced in a brown colorway and is part of the Digital Public Library of America and Historic New England...

Eugène Berman (1899-1972) - Oil on canvas "Paludia"
By Eugene Berman
Located in NEUILLY-SUR-SEINE, FR
------------ Eugène Berman - "Paludia" (1967-1968) Type: Oil on canvas Signature: Monogrammed at the bottom center, countersigned on the back Creation Date: 1967-Rome-1968 Dimensions: 67 cm x 54 cm Frame: Rare Troubadour-style papier-mâché frame, circa 1840 Exhibitions and Provenance: Exhibition label from Galerie Lucie Weill on the back Annotations from Forni Gallery in Bologna Bibliography: Galerie Lucie Weill, The Neo-Romantics: Christian Bérard, Léonid and Eugène Berman, Pavel Tchelitchew, Paris, 1971. "Paludia" is an oil on canvas created by Eugène Berman between 1967 and 1968 in Rome. Representative of his neo-romantic style, the piece exudes melancholy and poetic introspection, with a dreamlike quality reflecting his theatrical approach to composition. The rare papier-mâché Troubadour frame, dating from circa 1840, enhances the historical aura of the work, aligning with the artist’s deep appreciation for curiosities and antiquities. Biography of Eugène Berman (1899-1972): Born on November 4, 1899, in Saint Petersburg, Eugène Berman was a Russian-born American painter and theater designer. He was the brother of Léonide Berman. He received his early artistic education in Western Europe, training in Germany, Switzerland, and France, with studies under Pavel Naumov and Sergey Gruzenberg between 1914 and 1918. Leaving Russia in 1918, he studied at Académie Ranson in Paris, under the guidance of Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard. Influenced by Giorgio de Chirico and Picasso, he exhibited his works (portraits and landscapes) at the Salons d’Automne and des Tuileries between 1923 and 1927. Alongside his brother, he championed a poetic and symbolic form of painting. In 1935, he emigrated to the United States, working as a theater designer while continuing to produce allegorical works. He became an American citizen in 1937. He passed away on December 14, 1972, in Rome or New York. Cabinet of Curiosities and Personal Collection: Eugène Berman owned a significant collection of antique artifacts, including: Ceramics, statuettes, sculptures, glassware, textiles, and rugs from Pre-Columbian, African, New Guinea, British Columbia, Egyptian, Coptic, Greek, Etruscan, and Roman civilizations. Italian and Latin American furniture...

19th Century, Irish Marine Botany Specimens Made for the Niagara Falls Museum
Located in Hamilton, Ontario
19th century Irish Marine Botany Specimens made for Thomas Barnett of the Niagara Falls Museum. Seaweed samples were collected off the West Coast of Ireland in 1871 by Mrs. Maria J.W. Kirkwood and presented to Thomas Barnett Esquire, proprietor of the Niagara Falls Museum. These come as two separately framed pieces with hand embroidered lettering surrounded by seaweed and a poem written by Victoria Hall. Free shipping within the United States and Canada. The Niagara Falls Museum was a museum most notable for being the oldest Canadian museum (1827), as well as for having housed the mummy of Ramesses I for 140 years before its return to Egypt in 2003. It was founded by Thomas Barnett of Birmingham, England and underwent a few vocational changes in its history. More on Thomas Barnett and the Niagara Falls Museum. Thomas Barnett was born on December the 4th, 1799 near Birmingham, England. He moved to Canada in the early 1820s and opened the Niagara Falls Museum in 1827 at the base of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Barnett had a passion for collecting oddities. He retrofitted a former brewery house to exhibit his private collection. Although Barnett was aware of the collection patterns of his North American contemporaries, his own approach bore an uncanny similarity to the British tradition, such as the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the first traditional museum in Britain. The Niagara Falls Museum had humble beginnings. In 1827, the first museum contained Thomas Barnett's own cabinet of taxidermic curiosities.
