This richly detailed hand-colored lithograph is Plate IX from the 1932 folio The National Costumes of Holland by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt, with historical notes by Alma Oakes. Issued in a limited edition of only 500 copies for commercial use, the series documents the vanishing traditional dress of the Netherlands in full color. This plate features ceremonial attire from Staphorst, worn at major life events such as baptisms, weddings, funerals, and military conscription.
The central seated figure is the conscripted son, honored in a traditional ritual that involved drawing lots. He wears the distinctive Staphorst beaver-cloth waistcoat and trousers, with silver buttons in double rows down the chest.
