Like a shiny satin lapel against a tuxedo’s matte grain de poudre fabric, the bright bite of black pepper and the fresh flash of coriander shed light on the dark material. A magnetic ambergris accord hints at the nude skin beneath the suit.

THE INSPIRATION

Of all Monsieur Saint Laurent’s pieces, it is the most iconic. Introduced in his Autumn-Winter 1966 collection, the tuxedo reimagined a highly symbolic outfit of the masculine wardrobe: the smoking jacket, once worn to preserve gentlemen’s suits from the scent of cigars.

Adapting its sharp tailoring to female silhouettes, Mr. Saint Laurent created the first evening pantsuit for women. Launched in the ready-to-wear SAINT LAURENT rive gauche line, it was a success.
