The first bottled bourbon

Entrepreneurial spirit

Old Forester bourbon was first created by George Garvin Brown in 1870 in Louisville. He was the first to sell his bourbon in sealed glass bottles, as opposed to straight from the barrel to customers. It is this entrepreneurial commitment to quality that has led to Old Forester's respected reputation around the world today.

The Prohibition bourbon

Prohibition lasted from 1920-1933, during which time alcohol was only allowed to be sold for medicinal purposes. Old Forester held one of just six government licenses to bottle bourbon during this period. Because of this, Old Forester is the only bourbon to be continuously sold by the same family company before, during and after Prohibition.

Crafted from start to finish

Old Forester owns the entire bourbon making process through distilling, barrelling, ageing and bottling. They even produce their own barrels, charring and toasting them to specifications that are unique to Old Forester.

An award winning bourbon

Old Forester has won a number of awards across the range, including Gold Medal from the American Whiskey Masters for the 86 Proof (2017) and 95 Points "Tried and True Award" from the Ultimate Spirits Challenge (2016).

Old Forester cocktails

Old Forester Horses Neck

- 50ml Old Forester

- Orange zest for garnish

- Top with ginger ale

- 2 dashes of angostura bitters (optional)

Fill a highball glass with ice. Carefully pour over your Old Forester and add Angostura Bitters. Top with delicious ginger ale and stir briefly. Make the longest orange zest you can for the garnish and place into the drink in a spiral shape, with some draped over the edge, to resemble a horses neck hanging down over the glass.

Old Forester Mint Julep

- 50ml Old Forester

- 10 mint leaves and a couple of sprigs

- 10ml gomme or sugar syrup

- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters (optional)

Take your glass or julep tin. Add the Old Forester, sugar syrup, mint leaves and Angostura bitters. Add crushed ice to the rim of the glass and using along bar spoon, churn the ice mixture into the ice for 30 seconds. Top up with a touch more ice, making a nice peak and then garnish with the mint sprigs.

Old Forester Old Fashioned

- 50ml Old Forester

- 10ml gomme or sugar syrup

- 2 dashes Angostura bitters

- Orange sest garnish

Take a rocks glass, adding in the Old Forester, sugar syrup and Angostura bitters. Top with ice and stir until diluted to taste preference. Rolling an orange peel into a tight spiral in your finger tips, express the oils over the ice and then place into the drink.

    I bought 2x bottles on the fly when the Amazon price was exceptional and, having not had this before, I have to say it s definitely a premium bourbon. I usually drink Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, and Jack Daniels and Old Forrester is one I will buy again. It s not one you commonly see in the UK, and the flavour is excellent and distinctly different to other brands.. The bottle design and label stand out immediately when you see it in your hand, or on the shelf, so it creates a great overall impression. I d say this is perfect if you are a fan of American whiskey and want to expand your collection with a bottle that is reasonably priced and high end on quality.
