Description: This lyrical watercolor by Pierre Neveu captures a peaceful French village scene framed by a sunlit garden path, steps, and a cluster of traditional houses set against rolling hills. Neveu’s fluid brushwork and instinctive sense of colour bring instant warmth to the composition. Golden ochres, deep greens, and soft sky blues harmonise to create a vibrant yet intimate view of rural life in France.
At the centre of the composition, a set of gently descending steps leads toward a small white house with a sharply peaked roof—one of the characteristic architectural forms found in many historic French villages. Surrounding it, Neveu uses expressive, loosely applied washes to depict dense foliage, casting natural shadows across the walkway. The vegetation, built from layered greens, ochres, and deep blue-greys, frames the scene beautifully and adds depth to the composition.

Biography
Robert Henri was born Robert Henry Cozad in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 24, 1865, the son of a professional gambler and real estate developer. The family lived in Nebraska and Colorado, but fled east when the father shot and killed a rancher over a land dispute and was indicted for manslaughter. They changed their last name because of the ensuing scandal and eventually settled in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the early 1880s.

Signed and dated on the lower right recto.
Executed on thick cream wove paper, not laid down and taped to the mount along the upper edge. The upper, right and lower edges are slightly unevenly cut. There are two pinholes towards the upper right and upper left corners. The sheet is time stained and there is a spot of foxing beneath the lower edge of the drawing. There are some remnants from previous mounting at the upper two corners not visible when framed. There are handling marks to the perimeter of the sheet. The ink is strong and well preserved.
The artwork is accompanied by authentication of Robert P. Descharnes, Paris 2003, reference archive: D-3461.
