Impressionist Figurative Drawings and Watercolors
IMPRESSIONIST STYLE
Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionist art embraced loose brushwork and plein-air painting to respond to the movement of daily life. Although the pioneers of the Impressionist movement — Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir — are now household names, their work was a radical break with an art scene led and shaped by academic traditions for around two centuries. These academies had oversight of a curriculum that emphasized formal drawing, painting and sculpting techniques and historical themes.
The French Impressionists were influenced by a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who painted what they witnessed in nature. The rejection of pieces by these artists and the later Impressionists from the salons culminated in a watershed 1874 exhibition in Paris that was staged outside of the juried systems. After a work of Monet’s was derided by a critic as an unfinished “impression,” the term was taken as a celebration of their shared interest in capturing fleeting moments as subject matter, whether the shifting weather on rural landscapes or the frenzy of an urban crowd. Rather than the exacting realism of the academic tradition, Impressionist paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings represented how an artist saw a world in motion.
Many Impressionist painters were inspired by the perspectives in imported Japanese prints alongside these shifts in European painting — Édouard Manet drew on ukiyo-e woodblock prints and depicted Japanese design in his Portrait of Émile Zola, for example. American artists such as Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase, who studied abroad, were impacted by the work of the French artists, and by the late 19th century American Impressionism had its own distinct aesthetics with painters responding to the rapid modernization of cities through quickly created works that were vivid with color and light.

The artist:
Born in Warwick in 1901, Duffield came to Bristol at the age of 23 as an artist at the studio of Mardon Son and Hall. He worked as an illustrator producing designs for cigarette cards, remaining with the company for 37 years until his retirement. He was elected an Artist Member of the Bristol Savages in 1946. He was an extremely keen and regular attender not only in the studio but at all other Savage functions. He was noted for his friendly demeanour and seldom seen without a pipe in his mouth. He was a good pianist and would play popular tunes after the Wednesday evenings’ entertainment for members to join in singing and always with his pipe in his mouth. In 1965 he was commissioned by the Gloucester Regiment to paint a portrait of Brigadier Manley Angell James, VC, DSO, MBE, MC, a Bristol man who won his VC during the first World War. The painting is now in the Imperial War Museum. Frank was made a Life Member in 1973 and died in 1982.
Frank Duffiled was a member of the artist group, known as "The Bristol Savages":
Founded in 1894 by Ernest Ehlers, he invited his fellow Bristol based artists to spend a friendly evening in his studio to work and talk. At first, meetings were held in their private studios, then as their numbers grew, in rented premises. By 1904 this led to the official founding of the Bristol Savages and the holding ever since, of similar weekly meetings between October and May each year. In 1905 the first exhibition of paintings was held at the premises of George Nichols & Co., an auctioneer in Broad Street, Bristol. During the next 14 years exhibitions were held annually in Bristol and their first permanent home was Brandon Cottage which was made available to them through the good offices of fellow member James Fuller Eberle. About the artist.
Donald Jeffries Bear, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art's founding director from 1940 to 1952, was born on this day, February 5, 1905, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He previously served as the Director of the Denver Art Museum (1935-1940), regional advisor for the Federal Art Project (1935-38), and as principal of the World's Fair in New York (1938-39). While director of the SBMA, Bear served as president of the Western Association of Art Directors from 1943 to 1946. He was also an art critic and, last but not least, an artist.
Bear was well travelled, spoke numerous foreign languages, and as a Renaissance man, he was a singular match for another local polymath, Wright S. Ludington. In addition to his duties as director, Bear was also the curator and was responsible for producing over 600 exhibitions during his tenure. The exhibitions were as remarkable for their quality as well as their quantity, including SBMA's inaugural exhibition, Painting Today and Yesterday in the United States (June 5―September 1, 1941), which featured pieces from George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, Robert Harnett, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Georgia O'Keefe, and numerous others. Perhaps most remarkably, the SBMA displayed two of the most influential paintings of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica (1937) and Marcel Duchamp’s revolutionary Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912) as part of the “Free France” exhibition in 1942. William McGregor Paxton (June 22, 1869 – 1941) was an American painter and instructor who embraced the Boston School paradigm and was a co-founder of The Guild of Boston Artists. He taught briefly while a student at Cowles Art School, where he met his wife Elizabeth Okie Paxton, and at the Museum of Fine Arts School in Boston. Paxton is known for his portraits, including those of two presidents—Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge—and interior scenes with women, including his wife. His works are in many museums in the United States.

About the artist:
Charlotte Huntley might have been a renowned graffiti artist – her earliest work consisted of drawing on walls. But fate intervened and she learned to control these urges with a formal education at Scripps College, Chouinard School of Art, and the Los Angeles County Art Institute. These early tendencies reemerged not just in painting, but in other artistic ways as well, to the benefit of community theaters in the San Francisco Bay Area and Chicago. She spent years as a professional puppeteer and set designer, and developing her own unique watercolor painting style. Charlotte’s use of pointillism. Charlotte adapts the Pointillism of Seurat and other post-Impressionists and makes it her own in watercolor. The technique relies on the perceptive ability of the eye and mind of the viewer to mix the color spots into a fuller range of tones. Charlotte truly makes the most of this style of painting. Over her illustrious career, Huntley has been awarded a signature membership in 29 watercolor societies, including the American Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association, Transparent Watercolor Soc. of America, Northwest Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West. Overall, Charlotte has received 45 Awards in National Exhibitions since 2000 – an impressive achievement
