Untitled, Wash on paper by, ( set of two) Padma Bhushan Artist"In Stock
Located in Kolkata, West Bengal
K.G. Subramanyan - Untitled - 15 x 11 inches (unframed size) Charcoal & Wash on paper (Framed & Delivered) Style : K G Subramanyan was one of the leading artists who was part of India’s post-Independence search for identity through art. A writer, scholar, teacher and art historian, K G Subramanyan was prolific in his art, spanning the spectrum of mediums from painting to pottery, weaving, and glass painting. He believed in the value of Indian traditions and incorporated folklore, myth and local techniques and stories into his work. Critic Geeta Kapur has stated that Subramanyan was deeply influenced by popular, modern, classical and indigenous traditions. No matter what the medium, be it handmade paper or acrylic sheet, his artistic practice has integrated fluid traditions so as to create a new lingua franca. The strokes that shape the faces and the little blobs, the vertical and horizontal drama all become like a choreographed symbolism that has a sense of play in line and length. Nothing is in excess, nothing is obnoxious but each stroke forms the finesse of versatile ventures. About the Artist and his work : K.G. Subramanyan (1924-2016) was born in Kerala. Education : He completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the Presidency College in Chennai. In 1948, he graduated from Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan, where he studied under the tutelage of Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij. In 1955, he received a British Council Research Fellowship to the Slade School of Art at the University of London. He was an inspiration to generations of students as a member of the Baroda M S Fine Arts Faculty. His focus there in later years was on terracotta and pottery. Solo Shows : 2014 – The Government Museum & Arts Gallery, Chandigarh. 2014 – Red Earth Gallery, Vadodara. 2018 – Art Musings, Mumbai, KG Subramanyan...

Autumn Cotilion - Japanese Style Gyotaku Painting on Marbled Mulberry Paper
Located in Chicago, IL
In Japan they are known as Nishikigoi, or living jewels. These brilliantly colored varieties of the Amur carp have been selectively bred by family owned fisheries for generations. When I began this series of Gyotaku (Japanese fish printing) I studied the many varieties of Koi, each with their own unique colors and patterns. My particular favorites are the Tanchos which can be identified by the distinct red spot on their heads. To create these pieces I print common carp I catch myself with sumi ink using traditional techniques used by Japanese fisherman dating back the mid 1800's. I then tint the images using watercolor. In each piece I hope to translate a sense of movement to give the viewer a sense of calm one might experience watching the living versions lazily meandering around a serene pond. —Jeff Conroy Several koi swim in a circle while autumn leaves fall on the surface of the water in this Gyo-tako method of painting by artist Jeff Conroy. After inking and taking impressions of the koi, the artist then uses watercolors to enhance their beauty. By using marbled mulberry paper to print on, he has created the illusion of water with the swirls of the mulberry paper. The paper itself has a soft hue and slightly wavy texture adding the overall feel of the artwork. This artwork is unframed. Contact gallery for framing options. It is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice which dates back to the mid-1800s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. Chanel Quilted Black Caviar Ray - Sumi Ink on Mulberry Paper, Gyotaku Original
Located in Chicago, IL
Designers have an wide reach through out the world but have yet to reach the depths of the ocean. Artist Jeff Conroy has created this Gyotaku print of large ray entitled simply "Channel Quilted Black Caviar Ray" to fill that void. To achieve this remarkable painting, the artist applies sumi ink to a sting ray he caught himself on Florida's Gulf Coast, then "prints" it onto Marbled Mulberry paper - a soft, handmade paper. He then embellishes the details with watercolor to give extraordinary dimension and interest to its overall aesthetic. The artwork is framed as shown. Located in Chicago, IL
Designers have an wide reach through out the world but have yet to reach the depths of the ocean. Unforgettable
Located in New York, NY
The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow. He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle. Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...
