Minimalist Black Oil Painting, Collage, Mixed Media on Canvas Kevin Larmon
Located in Surfside, FL
Kevin Larmon, (American, b. 1955), 1985-1986, oil on canvas; hand signed, titled, and dated on the reverse Provenance: bear a Curt Marcos Gallery label verso This is one of a pair we are offering for sale Kevin Larmon (1955-) is an American artist and was assistant monitor of painting at Syracuse University. Kevin Larmon was born in Syracuse, New York in 1955. He grew up on a small horse farm. Larmon's mother was a school secretary while his father was a construction worker. He graduated from Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and moved to New York City as an undergraduate senior, where he finished his schooling at the New York Studio School. In the late 1970s, Larmon played guitar for Mudmen, a three piece band in the East Village of New York City with Craig Gillis playing bass, Mike Caffes playing drums, and percussionist Jill Burkhart. Mudmen played in venues such as CBGB, Danceteria, A7 (bar), Pyramid Club, Mudd Club, and The Limelight. Larmon started making still life paintings in 1979. He has also worked with atmospheric drawings and paintings since 1989, many of which are made on canvas or wood. In 2009, he began to paint his cell paintings. Larmon's paintings are built up through layers of collage and paint. Most famously, Larmon's work includes collages of gay male pornography that have been painted over with images that exist somewhere in between abstraction and form. These images are often anatomical. Conceptually, Larmon's work deals with issues such as the male body image and fascist culture. Similarly, Larmon's drawings on wood deal with ambiguously anatomical and abstracted forms. His work has been associated with the post-conceptualism and neo-conceptual art movements, which were prominent aspects of exhibitions at Gallery Nature Morte and with Tricia Collins and Richard Milazzo shaping the nature of painting after the rise of conceptual art. Larmon was also associated with Feature Inc., a gallery that was first established in Chicago in 1984. In August 1988, the gallery's director, known as Hudson, moved Feature Inc. to New York City. Larmon's first exhibition with Feature Inc. occurred in 1987 in Chicago, Illinois. Over the years, Hudson and Larmon would work together on many exhibitions. As a young artist, Larmon spent his Thursdays working to sustain Gallery Nature Morte together with the gallery owners, Alan Becher and Peter Nagy, when the gallery existed in New York City. Larmon was heavily influenced by his contemporaries at Gallery Nature Morte such as Robin Weglinski, Joel Otterson, and Steven Parrino. Other influential artists include Oliver Wasow, Robert Gober, Nancy Shaver, Carter Hodgkin, and Steven Wolfe. Larmon also drew inspiration from Rembrandt, Giorgio Morandi, Jackson Pollock, and Agnes Martin. During his time as a professor at Syracuse University, Larmon made an impact on many emerging artists including Deborah Roberts and Paul Weiner. Larmon participated in Aperto 86 at the 1986 Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy, where his paintings were exhibited at the Corderie at the Arsenal. From 1983–2013, Larmon was invited to exhibit in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, New York; Feature Inc, New York, New York; Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona; the University Art Museum at the University of California, Berkeley; the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut; Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Visual Arts Museum, New York, New York; the Morris Museum, Morristown, New Jersey; Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art, now the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Cleveland, Ohio; Aspen Art Museum, Aspen, Colorado; Jersey City Museum, Jersey City, New Jersey; and the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 2013, Larmon was included in a group show at the Leslie Sacks Gallery in Los Angeles, California alongside artists Christo, Jim Dine, Pablo Picasso, Chuck Close, Howard Hodgkin, Jasper Johns, Marino Marini, Henri Matisse, Karel Nel, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, and Sebastião Salgado. No frame needed for this work at the top is attached to plank of wood and ready to be hang, it will be rolled up for shipping. Terence La Noue was born in Hammond, Indiana in 1941. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1964. After going to Berlin as a Fulbright Meister Student at Hochscule fur Bildende Kunste in 1964-65 he went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cornell University. In addition to the Fulbright Foundation fellowship, La Noue has twice received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. He has had extensive teaching experience at Trinity College 1967-72, the City University of New York 1972-85 and at New York University in 1987. He lives between Arizona, Paris, France and Vermont. Terence La Noue, who has created powerful, compelling paintings for the last four decades, is considered one of the outstanding talents of 20th century American abstract art. Layering canvas, fabric, gauze, acrylic paint and cast elements forming a lively melding of many different materials, symbols and colors to create tapestry-like paintings, he conjures up colorfully rich abstractions that reveal a sense of myth, magic and mystery. His extensive world travels serve as inspiration for works that are abstract mixtures of Western and non-Western traditions and histories. India, South America, Morocco, Mexico and Nepal have been favorite destinations. Terence La Noue’s unique approach to painting and printmaking has achieved worldwide recognition. Beginning in Berlin in 1965 he has had over a hundred and thirty acclaimed solo exhibitions in London, Paris, Tehran, Stockholm, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Cologne, New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Palm Beach, Dallas, Atlanta, Tucson and Scottsdale. His work is represented in the permanent collections of major museums including: The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of Art, The Corcoran Gallery, The Guggenheim Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York, The Tate Modern in London in Japan, Singapore, France and Australia including the Center for Contemporary Art, Kitakyushu, Japan, the Power Institute of Fine Arts, Sydney, Australia, The Musee d'Art et Archeologie, Paris, France. Terence la Noue worked extensively at Tyler Graphics from 1987 to 1993 and is represented in the National Gallery’s Kenneth Tyler Collection by a large body of work made in 1987 and 1991. La Noue’s work is characterized by an intensive layering process, which was well accommodated by the Tyler workshop. The artist found that through collaboration with Ken Tyler...

Enchanting - Leather and Stone Abstract Sculpture, Burri and Fontana inspired
Located in New York, NY
Angelo Canevari’s Mirabile ( Enchanting ) is a 39.5 x 39.5 inch leather and stone abstract sculpture. This piece is part of a limited number of works where Canevari engaged in a different medium than bronze. The title "Mirabile” comes from a 17th century quote describing the work of the famous Baroque Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It refers to Bernini's astonishing fusion of architecture, sculpture and painting. In this work Canevari skillfully plays with different shades of leather and a river pebble to blur the distinction between painting, sculpture or architectural piece. The piece projects a magnetic presence. It reminds the immensity and peacefulness of the golden sand mounds in the Sahara desert when looked upon from an aerial view. Angelo Canevari is an Italian sculptor who comes from a long lineage of artists active in Rome since the 17th century. He has been commissioned several works by the Vatican including the Bronze Doors of the Cathedral of Belluno and the Vatican Coins.

Andersen (Printer) Philip Barber (Printer) Hang Nguyen (Printer) Stephanie Nowack (Printer) Michael Reid (Printer) Daniel Rounds (Printer) Vermillion Editions Limited (Publisher) Sam Gilliam Biography: Sam Gilliam was one of the great innovators in postwar American painting. He emerged from the Washington, D.C. scene in the mid 1960s with works that elaborated upon and disrupted the ethos of Color School painting. A series of formal breakthroughs would soon result in his canonical Drape paintings, which expanded upon the tenets of Abstract Expressionism in entirely new ways. Suspending stretcherless lengths of painted canvas from the walls or ceilings of exhibition spaces, Gilliam transformed his medium and the contexts in which it was viewed. As an artist in the nation’s capital at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, this was not merely an aesthetic proposition; it was a way of defining art’s role in a society undergoing dramatic change. Gilliam pursued a pioneering course in which experimentation was the only constant. Inspired by the improvisatory ethos of jazz, his lyrical abstractions took on an increasing variety of forms, moods, and materials. In addition to a traveling retrospective organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. in 2005, Sam Gilliam was the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1971); The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (1982); Whitney Museum of American Art, Philip Morris Branch, New York (1993); J.B. Speed Memorial Museum, Louisville, Kentucky (1996); Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. (2011); and Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland (2018), among many other institutions. A semi-permanent installation of Gilliam’s paintings opened at Dia:Beacon in August 2019. His work is included in over fifty public collections, including those of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Art Institute of Chicago. Chevron Collage, Signed, de-accessioned from the Honolulu Museum of Art, Framed
Located in New York, NY
KENNETH NOLAND Untitled, for Trustees of the Honolulu Museum of Art, 1984 Mixed Media collage with silver and colored foil on board. Signed on verso (back) with personal inscription. "for Twig and Laila" (Trustees of the Honolulu Museum of Art), Deaccessioned from the Honolulu Museum of Art Collection Inscription done in black marker and reads: "A Little Exercise For Twig and Laila With Thanks For A Wonderful 3 Days At ' Cedar House' On The 'Big Island'... 1 Sept 1984 Honolulu Hawaii." Frame included Measurements Framed: 12.5" x 12.5" x .3" Artwork: 8.75" x 8.75" This reflective Chevron collage was de-accessioned by the Honolulu Museum of Art. In 2018, it was exhibited in the show "On Black Mountain: The Bauhaus Legacy in America", April 5, 2019-April 27, 2019 at the Sager Braudis Gallery in Columbia, Missouri, and is reproduced in the exhibition catalogue. Unique signed and dedicated mixed media collage with silver and colored foil on board by the important Color Field painter Kenneth Noland. It's quite a dazzling work, combining color field, geometric abstraction with Op Art, as the work changes appearance and color with the reflected and refracted light. - sometimes appearing light; sometimes darker. See the photos -- there's a light one and a darker one - and they both depict the same work. What's so impressive is that this work literally changes color depending on how the light reflects against it. The artist wrote a personal and heartfelt inscription on the verso to "Twig and Laila". (Twig (sic), which the artist deliberately misspells, is Thurston Twigg Smith, former publisher of The Honolulu Advertiser, who was married to New York philanthropist Laila Twigg Smith. Laila had lived in Hawaii since 1970, where she and her husband had put together a substantial collection of contemporary art. Unfortunately, the two divorced in 1996 and soon after she returned to New York. Two years later, in 1998, Laila died of liver failure at the young age of only 53. Laila was a major philanthropist and art collector who moved from Manhattan to Hawaii. She was a board member of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York and a major donor the Honolulu Museum in Hawaii. Laila donated the present Ken Noland...

untitled (Woman in Wedding Dress), collage by Rodolfo Morales
Located in Palm Springs, CA
This enchanting mixed-media collage by Rodolfo Morales—one of the defining figures of the Oaxacan School—embodies the artist’s celebrated blend of magical realism, folk tradition, and dreamlike symbolism. Morales frequently returned to the motif of La Novia (The Bride), a solitary and iconic presence that evokes themes of ritual, memory, and spiritual passage within village life. In this intimate yet visually rich composition, the central figure is constructed from layered painted papers and dimensional materials. Morales incorporates actual lace for the veil and dress, giving the bride a tactile, almost reliquary presence. Surrounding her is a vibrant mosaic of cut paper bells, floral forms, and geometric patterns in jewel tones of magenta, cobalt, and emerald. The figure’s stylized face—rendered in the artist’s distinctive palette of pinks and reds—adds to the surreal, suspended quality that characterizes Morales’ finest works. The collage is set within its original punched-tin (hojalata) frame. These frames were often conceptual extensions of the artwork itself, produced in collaboration with Oaxacan art...
