Realist Animal Paintings

REALIST STYLE

Realist art attempts to portray its subject matter without artifice. Similar to naturalism, authentic realist paintings and prints see an integration of true-to-life colors, meticulous detail and linear perspectives for accurate portrayals of the world.

Work that involves illusionistic techniques of realism dates back to the classical world, such as the deceptive trompe l’oeil used since ancient Greece. Art like this became especially popular in the 17th century when Dutch artists like Evert Collier painted objects that appeared real enough to touch. Realism as an artistic movement, however, usually refers to 19th-century French realist artists such as Honoré Daumier exploring social and political issues in biting lithographic prints, while the likes of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet painting people — particularly the working class — with all their imperfections, navigating everyday urban life. This was a response to the dominant academic art tradition that favored grand paintings of myth and history.

By the turn of the 20th century, European artists, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were experimenting with nearly photographic realism in their work, as seen in the attention to every botanical attribute of the flowers surrounding the drowned Ophelia painted by English artist John Everett Millais.

Although abstraction was the guiding style of 20th-century art, the realism trend in American modern art endured in Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and other artists’ depictions of the complexities of the human experience. In the late 1960s, Photorealism emerged with artists like Chuck Close and Richard Estes giving their paintings the precision of a frame of film.

Contemporary artists such as Jordan Casteel, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Aliza Nisenbaum are now using the unvarnished realist approach for honest representations of people and their worlds. Alongside traditional mediums, technology such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations are helping artists create new sensations of realism in art.

Shawn Faust, "Motorin", Black and White Equine Horse Race Charcoal on Canvas
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
This equine drawing, "Motorin'" is a 30x40" charcoal black and white painting on canvas by artist Shawn Faust depicting a horse and jockey in full leap. Complimentary to Faust's traditional oil works, these charcoal on canvas sketches boast a clean and contemporary feeling exhibiting the muscle tone and mass of these majestic creatures. Fixed with varnish, these charcoal works are permanent and best framed or unframed. About the artist: Shawn’s love and fascination for drawing came as an unexpected gift from his grandfather at the age of 5. Young Faust was a tag-a-long during his grandfather’s impromptu plein air art lesson with his older brother in the back yard of his Aunt’s house. A retired director for the American Red Cross, Shawn’s grandfather, who had only recently picked up the brush himself, began a charcoal sketch that would forever change how Faust would see the world. From that brief lesson, Faust recalls vividly, “The techniques I witnessed from my grandfather that day, were pure magic!” With his newfound gift of magic, Shawn quickly began practicing his art of 3D illusion for anyone who wanted to see it. During his childhood, you would be hard pressed not to find Shawn doodling on a piece of paper at some point during the day. Among his favorite things to draw as a youngster were his comic book heroes. Instead of reading the comics, he spent all his time studying the line work and muscle forms of the comic book characters. And so, began his interest in portraying the human form. Upon entering college at the University Of Delaware, Shawn enrolled as an accounting major yet emerged with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1990. At the U of D he is forever grateful for the privilege of studying under distinguished artists Stephen Tanis, Charles Rowe, Robert Straight and Rosemary Lane. Shortly after graduating, Shawn embarked on a career in Illustration. By 1993 he had quickly become one of Delaware’s prominent architectural illustrators working for more than 75% of the homebuilders in Delaware. Between illustration jobs, Shawn pursued his interest in portrait painting. In 1992 Faust was commissioned to paint the official portrait of outgoing Delaware Governor, Michael Castle. Continuing his quest to learn more about portrait painting, Faust studied with Daniel Greene in 1995. He credits Daniel Greene for giving him the greatest key to unlocking a whole new way of seeing and interpreting color. By 1995, Shawn’s portrait commissions and easel paintings were supporting him as much as his illustration jobs, so he decided to focus entirely on his fine art career. This included opening a gallery and custom frame shop with his wife and brother. During the twelve years of owning and operating the gallery, Shawn continued his intense portrait research by focusing his studies on the eyes of his favorite subject, the horse. His head studies of horses caught the attention of Mr. Richard Golden, a prominent horse owner in Chesapeake City, MD and president of Northview Stallion Station. Northview is best know for standing Northern Dancer...

Antique 19th Century Norwegian Artists Oil Painting Pastoral Windmill Shepherd
Located in Stockholm, SE
Attributed to Morten Müller (1828-1911) and Olaf Christopher Dahl (1842-1895), signed lower right, this extraordinary antique oil painting captures the timeless beauty of 19th century Norwegian pastoral landscape. This exceptional collaborative masterpiece, painted circa 1870-1880 during the golden age of Norwegian landscape art, depicts an enchanting countryside scene where a young shepherd boy guides his cattle to a tranquil watering hole. The composition unfolds like a gentle poem of rural life, with lush vegetation embracing rolling hills while an ancient windmill stands majestically on the distant hillside, creating striking focal point and masterful perspective. Rich oil painting technique reveals the artists' shared vision of Norway's serene countryside, where peaceful pastoral tranquility below contrasts dramatically with gathering storm clouds above. This romantic Norwegian landscape tradition showcases nuanced brushwork and atmospheric effects that exemplify the peak of Scandinavian art movement. Both renowned Norwegian artists are prominently featured in National Museum Oslo permanent collection, confirming their significant contribution to Nordic artistic heritage. This rare antique oil painting represents sublime testament to 19th century collaborative artistry, where two masters united their talents to create lasting vision of Norway's natural beauty. Size app.: 46 x 69 cm (roughly 18.1 x 27.2 in), with frame 60 x 84 cm cm (roughly 23.6 x 33.1 in). Good condition with wear, tiny losses to paint in minor areas and craquelure. So it needs minor care and conservation. Please study good resolution images for overall cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 4.4 kg is going to measure some 6 kg volume weight packed for shipment. Morten Müller began his art studies with Adolph Tidemand and Hans Gude in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 1847 to 1848. From 1850 he was again a student at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, with Johann Wilhelm Schirmer as a teacher. From 1850 to 1851, Müller painted with the Swedish landscape painter Marcus...

Red-Tailed Hawk on the Hunt, Original Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Emil Morhardt paints a swooping hawk he observed circling the sky and then landing on a tall nearby tree. The bird inspects the many gopher holes nearby. Emil captures it just as it launches a successful attack—painting the plumage with fine detailed brushwork and intense colors against a pure white background. The piece embodies the essence of this powerful raptor.

About the Artist
Emil Morhardt is an acrylic painter from Santa Barbara, California who expresses his passion for birds through realistic acrylic paintings. He paints at home in a studio room that has large windows and a north-facing view of the mountains. He observes the animals from this window, watching roadrunners, foxes, bobcats, deer, and coyote run by. Surrounded by this wildlife, Emil paints bird portraits reminiscent of those by artist John James Audubon. He bases his paintings off hundreds of photographs he takes of birds in the wild and at wildlife recovery centers. Emil captures the freedom and inquisitiveness that birds display...

"Tierra" Acrylic and Oil Painting
Located in Denver, CO
Kierstin Young's (US based) "Tierra" is an acrylic and oil painting depicting a Comet Moth and it's yellow and red designs Artist Statement/Bio: (b. The Year of the Rabbit) Kierstin's life began by almost never beginning at all. A car accident occurred while Kierstin’s mother was pregnant with her. The doctors advised against continuing the pregnancy for fear that Kierstin would be born without limbs or even blind. Her parents decided against it, and Kierstin was born a healthy child. This story was relayed to her as a child as a reminder of how serendipitous her life was. Kierstin was always filled with an overflowing energy and creativity. This led her on many diverse paths in life. Her many areas of focus included psychology, poetry, photography, mountaineering, religious studies, music, playing ice hockey, spelunking and pretending to be an astronaut. She grew up between two places; the first was a house built on Native American burial grounds in rural New Jersey. The second was a summer home in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of New York. For the first sixteen years of her life, she was home taught by an assortment of sane and insane people. Her junior year she began the strange new adventure of going to school. She was most likely the only 16 year old in the world to be that ecstatic about riding a school bus, because it was for the first time in her life. It was there in public school, that her art teachers really encouraged her to pursue her love of art. Hopes were high for going to art school, but Kierstin found herself forbidden from even applying by her parents. She applied anyway. Upon getting rejected from prestigious art schools such as RISD and Parsons, Kierstin decided to attend duCret school of Art. Being rejected turned out to be a serendipitous turn of events for Kierstin once again. It was there at duCret that she met Timothy Jahn and began studying in his Academy duCret and subsequently Jahn Studios. This lead her to continue her education at the Ani Art Academy under the direction of Anthony Waichulis.

"Faun and Fawn" Aaron Bohrod, Realist Still Life, Deer and Putti
Located in New York, NY
Aaron Bohrod Faun and Fawn, 1984 Signed lower right Oil on gesso board 16 x 12 inches Aaron Bohrod's work has not been limited to one style or medium. Initially recognized as a regionalist painter of American scenes, particularly of his native Chicago, Bohrod later devoted himself to detailed still-life paintings rendered in the trompe l'oeil style. He also worked for several years in ceramics and wrote a book on pottery. Born in 1907, Bohrod began his studies at Chicago's Crane Junior College in 1925, and two years later enrolled in the Art Institute of Chicago. But it was at the Art Students League in New York City, from 1930 to 1932, that he studied under the man believed to be his most significant early influence, John Sloan. Sloan's romantic realism is reflected in the many depictions of Chicago life, which comprised most of Bohrod's early work. Under Sloan's tutelage, Bohrod came to subscribe to the belief that painters should find the subjects of their art in the immediate world around them. These paintings emphasized architecture unique to north Chicago and featured Chicagoans engaged in such everyday activities as working, playing or going to the theatre. The romantic aspect was conveyed by the use of misty colors, and the realism by attention to detail. In 1936, Bohrod won the Guggenheim Fellowship award in creative painting...
