This artwork titled "Near Tubac, Arizona" c.1960 is an oil painting on canvas by noted southwestern artist Sid Cedargreen, 1904-2011. It is signed at the lower left corner by the artist. The canvas size is 22 x 30 inches, framed size is 28.5 x 36.5 inches. Framed in original wooden beige and gold frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Sid Cedargreen was a mid-century painter whose art beautifully depicted the desert Southwest. In 1958, Mr. Cedargreen was part of an art collective that transformed Tubac into an art colony. While in Tubac, he founded the Tubac Center for the Arts and the Santa Cruz Art Association. During this time, he was the winner of the distinguished Master Mead award for depicting the Southwest. His paintings are beautiful landscapes featuring areas in Arizona and all around the American Southwest. He continued to live in Arizona and paint its beauty for several years. In 2011, Sid Cedargreen passed away at the age of 89. After he passed away, Mr. Cedargreen's family found a plethora of paintings that Cedargeen had been storing in his house. In his career as an artist, Mr. Cedargreen had many one-man shows, in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Tucson, Nogales, and Tubac, and in Santa Barbara, and Palm Desert, California; in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Ogunquit, Maine and in Taos, Deming, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. This mural study is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Industry and Commerce, 1936, tempera on panel, 16 ½ x 39 ½ inches, signed verso “John Ballator, Portland Ore.” provenance includes: J.C. Penney Company, represented by Russell Tether Fine Arts Assoc.; presented in a newer wood frame About the Painting Industry and Commerce is a prime example of WPA Era muralism. Like a Mediaeval alter, this mural study is filled with icons, but the images of saints and martyrs are replaced with symbols of America's gospel of prosperity through capitalism. Industry and Commerce has a strong narrative quality with vignettes filling the entire surface. Extraction, logistics, design, power generation, and manufacturing for printing, chemicals, automobiles and metal products are all represented. To eliminate any doubt about the mural's themes, Ballator letters a description into the bottom of the study. Ballator also presents an idealized version of industrial cooperation, as his workers, lab-coated technicians and tie-wearing managers work harmoniously toward a common goal in the tidy and neatly designed environments. Although far from the reality of most industrial spaces, Ballator's study reflects the idealized and morale boosting tone that many mural projects adopted during the Great Depression. About the Artist John R Ballator achieved success as a muralist, lithographer, and teacher during the Great Depression. Born in Oregon, he studied at the Portland Museum Art School, the University of Oregon and at Yale University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Art. In 1936, Ballator was commissioned to paint a mural panel for the new Department of Justice Building in Washington DC, an important project that spanned five years with several dozen artists contributing a total of sixty-eight designs. Ballator completed murals for the St. Johns Post Office and Franklin High School, both in Portland, Oregon. He also contributed to the 1938 murals at Nathan Hale School in New Haven, Connecticut. During the late 1930s, Ballator taught art for several years at Washburn College in Topeka, Kanas, where he completed a mural for the Menninger Arts & Craft Shop before accepting a professorship at Hollins College...

About the artist. Self-taught painter of figurative painting. At eleven years old, it was the Great War and his Certificate of Studies in his pocket, he first worked in the fields of the village farms, then until he was 17, he was employed at the Coeuvres distillery where he is responsible for the proper functioning of the machines. In 1925 he did his military service at the barracks of St Vincent de Laon (Aisne) in the 101st heavy artillery regiment as a pointer brigadier, and he was already drawing on notebooks. At the end of his service, having chosen to go to Paris to take drawing and painting lessons, he became a cashier at the Grand Magasins du Louvre. He begins to discover Paris, its districts, its buildings, shops, churches. During the week he sets up his easel on the sidewalks of Montmartre, Notre Dame, where the Latin Quarter and on Sundays, he sells these paintings on Boulevard Raspail. He took part in the Battle of France in September 1939at june 1940. He testifies in a notebook of the events and emotions he has gone through. After the Second World War, he set up his home and studio in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, but he remained very attached to his native village where he went very regularly. Married, he takes his family almost every summer to the Côte d'Azur where he paints with great pleasure the warm colors and the intense light of the Esterel or the Var coast. He participates in many Parisian salons and exhibitions in Paris and province. Awarded at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1961, as well as at the Salon Violet in Paris. From 1967, Mrs. Rosenthal of the Galerie Haussmann (Paris), regularly exhibited her works on "Old Paris" which particularly appealed to British and American tourists.
