This precisely detailed photo-realist painting was made by Joseph E. Richards in 2001. The artist painted this piece when he was 71 years old during a long career of painting trains, cargo ships, and industrial machinery. Richards served in the US Navy during WWII and went on to study at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia before showing with Ivan Karp of O.K. Harris Gallery in NYC. The artist moved upstate to Hillsdale, NY for the later years of his life.
This painting captures one of Richards' most beloved subjects, industrial cranes. With a photo-realist approach to the subject, Richards was able to capture detailed changes in light and shadow, shape and form. The red and yellow crane, painted with extreme detail and focus, vividly contrasts against a bright blue sky. Areas of brown rust, attesting to the machine's power and longevity, are captured with immaculate precision.
Since the painting has a very smooth surface, one could easily mistake this painting with a photograph. It is not until you examine the painting up close, do you realize the artist's calculated brushwork.
The painting is framed with natural wood stripping. The work is lightweight and easy to hang with pre-installed wire. The artist's signature is located on the back of the canvas.
About the artist:
Joseph Richards’ precisely painted canvases of giant cranes, cargo booms, propellers and train engines are fueled with a fascination like that of a six-year old boy. Working directly from photographs, Richards unites light and color together as one element, evident in the reflective surfaces of steel. The otherwise mundane signs of corrosive wear are magnified; rust stains glow on the canvas and yellow painted pulleys radiate like beacons against a bright, blue sky. Richards finds beauty in their dramatic color, resilient texture, definitive form and functionality. Richards paints sections of these objects in grand scale, with canvases up to 6 feet long and eye-popping color, calling attention to their massive proportions and exceptional strength.
Richards had solo exhibits in New York City, Scottsdale AZ, and Washington DC, and his work is found in private and corporate collections here and abroad, e.g., the Tucson Museum of Fine Arts, Mobil Oil, Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia, and E. Jean Belloni in Geneva, Switzerland.

Born in 1921 in Des Moines, Iowa, Joseph Richards left for Chicago after high school to pursue a career in art. After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 – 1945, he went on to study at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He eventually settled with his wife, Betty, in New York City. In 1969, longtime dealer Ivan Karp opened The OK Harris Gallery on West Broadway in Manhattan’s SoHo. Yuri Martinez Ramos was born in Havana, Cuba on November 24, 1964.
He studied at the Elemental School of Plastic Arts from 1975 – 1979 and the National School of the Arts from 1979 – 1983.
Martinez’ figurative paintings have been compared to Botero because of his satirical social commentary. His style, however, is uniquely his own with typically vibrant Latin colors and use of expressive magical realism. His paintings tell his story and the story of the Cuban dilemma.
Martinez was granted permission by the US Justice Department after much effort with Cuban authorities to come to the US with his family and pursue his career outside Cuba. He now lives and works in Texas.

Frederick Harold Cress was a British painter who migrated to Australia and won the Archibald Prize in 1988 with a portrait of John Bread.
Cress was born in Poona, British Raj, but went to England with his parents in 1948, when he was ten. He was educated at the Birmingham College of Art in England, and migrated to Australia in 1962 as a "ten pound Pom", meaning that he only had to pay ten pound for his fare to Australia. Cress met the painter Anne Judell and married her in 1967; they divorced in 1991. He started his career painting figuratively, but became well known for his abstract work in the late 60s and 70s. TECHNIQUE PHOTO-PAINTING
The technique used was defined as PHOTO-PAINTING by the art critic Silvia Pegoraro of Ravenna Italy and was an Artist's invention in 1994. In fact, since 1964 Dario Cusani had been working with photography and painting which had never been united.
The Artist:
"In 1994 I returned to Naples, the city where I was born and had been missing for 10 years after moving to Rome in 1984. I returned to see the MIRACLE achieved by the G7 with the Presidents of the most powerful countries led by Bill Clinton, US President. It was a wonderful visit to my city reborn in its ancient splendor! I took over 5,000 photos of the squares and monuments of Naples with my Nikon. I returned to Rome and had all the photos printed and put them on various tables and assembled all the various pieces. I immediately realized that parts were missing which I completed with paint. A spontaneous gesture with which I had unconsciously achieved a great innovation: I had combined the REALITY of photography with the DREAM represented by painting. Silvia, my muse who knew me well, when I showed her the first work IMPERATING MALE (R:0176) that I had done she said to me: "Dario you have united the TWO WORLDS of your life: that of your childhood with the sensitivity of the dreamer with the concrete one that they gave you taught your parents with education, training (degree in Economic Sciences) and work started at 15 years old in your family's copper industry. These formative years had distanced myself from those of childhood when I studied the piano and dreamed of becoming an orchestra conductor. I also drew and painted with my imagination in search of the affections I was missing as my parents were busy in the factory rebuilding Italy destroyed by the recently ended war. I then refined PHOTO-PAINTING which developed into DIGITAL PROCESSING having replaced the BRUSH with the MOUSE to fill the gaps left by the photography and complete the REALITY which with painting became another FANTASTIC reality"

This work is part of the SOCIAL "research" which addresses issues that concern people and the "polis" which in Latin means city but also "political model".
I LOVE MANHATTAN
In 1999 I was invited to have an exhibition at the Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimò in New York scheduled for September 2000. So I went to the BIG APPLE for the first time at the age of 50 and was amazed by the great vital energy I felt. Until then I had traveled abroad little because I was busy with studies, sports and already at 19 years old in my family's copper industry and after a few years also with my children who I had looked after a lot since they came into the world.
In NY I took many photos, but this work was born from another image: the map of the phantasmagoric subway!!! It was simple for me, since I was a child I looked at the clouds where I saw many shapes of people, animals etc. I saw at first sight the prow of a Jumbo, the famous giant of the skies, and sketched some sketches.
Upon returning to Rome I was in love with NY and it was easy to see in that map another image that is closely linked to love. The male penis...
