"The flowers hide the face so that you don’t make assumptions about the model, you focus on the beauty of existence," states artist David Shepherd. "You appreciate that they are a person without any impressions of their character. When I compose a painting I think back to my childhood memories. It ties in with what I was saying above. When you’re a child it’s much easier to make friends and enjoy people. That innocence allows for such pure emotion. I always try and get back to that feeling when I’m composing my work."
About the Artist
Canadian artist David Shepherd fuses techniques from both old and modern masters to create contemporary interpretations of the human form. While offering strong nods to pop art and cubism, the work remains grounded by David’s training in 19th Century academic realism. Combining discrete techniques within a single tableau is initially jarring to the viewer, creating an unexpected visual complexity in the work and demonstrating the artist’s breadth of skills. “I think in the future we will be much more interested in works of art that show a mastery of multiple styles,” says David. Each artwork effectually suggests the surreal nature of human existence within a convoluted modern society.

It is particularly interesting to find Maurice Millière working in a genre very different from that for which he is best known: depictions of young Parisian women. This unique portrait shows Millière in a more original and intriguing light. It captures a painter in his studio, creating a scene with various details: canvases on the floor to the right, a stretcher frame on trestles and even shoes that must have been quite striking at the time. The painter appears to be taking a break to smoke and pose for Millière.
There is a real sense of complicity between the two artists. At the same time, however, everything in this painting is carefully chosen and composed, such as the admirable red background against which the model stands out.
Combining elements of both a portrait and a studio scene, the painter's intention was to create a unique piece that pays homage to the bond between the two artists.
Maurice Georges Louis Millière was born in Le Havre in 187. He came from a working-class family in Le Havre; his father was a salesman for a merchant.
Millière began by studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre. He moved to Paris in 1889 and enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs, also attending certain workshops at the École des Beaux-Arts.
His first notable graphic works were posters and sheet music for companies such as Le Boulch and Le Divan Japonais (1899).
From 1917 onwards, he published large numbers of depictions of scantily clad women: first in Fantasio (1917), then in Bagatelles, La Vie parisienne, Le Frou-frou, Le Sourire, Le Gai-Paris, etc.
At the end of 1920, he joined the République de Montmartre, a charitable association.
Contemporary with those of Louis Icart, his “little women” were to enjoy great success outside France: during the 1920s, American periodicals reprinted his creations, as well as those of Suzanne Meunier and Georges Léonnec...

-ARTIST STATEMENT-
I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis
personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my
narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I
use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered
reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art
historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an
Everyman who is at odds with society and his self.
Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its
overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their
tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow
seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid.
This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world
through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light.

Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey...

Richard Butler (Post-war and Contemporary artist) studied painting at the Epsom School of Art and Design (now University for the Creative Arts). In school he was exposed to radical developments taking hold in the artworld including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, David Hockney and Francis Bacon and the emerging British pop art of Richard Hamilton and Peter Blake. He later turning to silkscreen printmaking. But like many famous rockers, from Keith Richards and Roger Waters to Tupac Shakur and Lady Gaga, Butler began making music in art school, and art was a passion that never went away. Shortly after graduating from the art school, in 1977, Richard Butler became a founder and singer/songwriter for the British post-punk / new wave rock and roll band "The Psychedelic Furs". Quickly gaining commercial success, his musical career kept him away from painting throughout the 80s and the 90s. In early 2000s, Richard Butler returned to painting and started exhibiting his art in the U.S. and Europe. He prefers to call himself a painter who sings, rather than a singer who paints. He was influenced by Anselm Kiefer and Francesco Clemente and became friends with Julian Schnabel. With his daughter, Maggie Mozart Butler, as his muse, he produces expressionistic portraits of pensive female subjects, who serve as ciphers for himself. As he describes, “In a way I think all of my paintings are self-portraits in that, though the face I am painting may not be my own, the feeling I get back from the painting is certainly an important element of my own psyche.” His work is a sort of dark moody expressionism with nods towards Lucien Freud.
