"Ab-scrap" - Abstract Geometric Composition in Acrylic on Wood Panel Dynamic abstract composition by Sam Dantone (American, b. 1971). This piece was created as a part of the "Ab-scrap" series, where Dantone uses excess paint from his sign painting business to create new compositions. Whenever there is a little extra paint on a brush, Dantone would add it to a panel, slowly creating a new composition out of the leftovers from his other work. Using symmetry as a basis, Drakopoulos derives structure by combining elements from the natural world and science. Modifying these elements digitally, Drakopoulos distills into a pattern or shape, and then layers them with a different structure and repeats the process of layering paint in resin. She tries to find the most subtle and interesting way to connect the different layers that will reveal an underlying structure or system. Slowly as the work evolves, these inner-connections and details begin to form and define the energy and invisible forces that govern the movement of matter, from the microcosmic level of molecules and light particles, to the macrocosmic of planets and galaxies. Drakopoulos views the cosmos as a primordial, all encompassing field within which the illusion of matter is created and dissolved. In this field, particles come together to create complex structures and matter evolves into its maximum state of order. This moment is temporary, a state of transition. The form will subsequently dissolve and the process will begin again. The central images that appear in her work describe this moment of emergence. They are not a representation of actual cosmic phenomena but rather an invented image of an inner mindscape. When attention is directed to the infinite vast field, which contains all of existence in potential, the holographic matrix of the universe is revealed, of which our consciousness is an interwoven part. "Maybe" is an abstract artwork by Stan Olthuis composed of acrylic paint on polystyrene mounted in a painted wood frame. Maybe measures 26" high by 30" wide by 2.5" deep. Typical of the artist, this minimal geometric abstraction resonates with a rich charge. It's a sculpture and a painting. The circles, the discs, almost touch but not quite. B&W photo is of Ms. Freire with renowned sculptor Etienne Martin at the Ecole Nationals des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Elizabeth Freire is a Brazilian-born, contemporary American artist. At the age of eighteen, she left Rio de Janeiro and moved to Paris to study sculpture at l’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, receiving her Diploma there in 1979 under the direction of Claude Viseux, Etienne Martin, and Cesar. During that time she worked as an apprentice at the Fonderie de France where she learned bronze technique and she also attended etching courses at l’Ecole de Montparnasse. In 1976, she won a commission to make three life-size figures representing the printing company, “Les Imprimeries de Boulogne,” at the International Printing Fair in Paris. She spent 1977 in Aix-en-Provence where she carved the local stone of Rogne. Returning to Paris, the painter Lutka Pink introduced her to Otero, Frans Krajcberg and Hajdu from whom she received valuable lessons. In 1978, she traveled to Brazil where she was invited to participate in the exhibit ‘A Century of Sculpture in Brazil’. She also met with the sculptor Sergio Camargo and the architect Oscar Niemeyer. She then traveled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa. In 1983, the sculptor Cardenaz advised her to go to Carrara in Italy to develop her carving skills.
