A fine & large antique maritime oil painting of the war ship HMS Britannia, by Robert Strickland Thomas (1787-1853), the painting circa 1835.
The painting depicts HMS Britannia broadside with several other war ships of the British fleet, most likely returning from the Mediterranean.
In the foreground are several small boats with sailors variously occupied attending to them. A yacht with a crowded deck is visible on the left. In the center foreground there is a barrel or possibly a buoy in the water, a device commonly employed in some of Thomas's paintings.
To the verso is an old auction label from the 1920s and another partial label, there are also some annotations on the stretcher with details of photographic images of the painting.
There is also an old label of ownership "Mrs. Strange 6 Elvaston Place", this address was a large Georgian house in the prestigious London borough of South Kensington.

This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.

Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...

Ships Heading to Sea - Dutch 17th century Old Master marine art oil painting

This fantastic Dutch Old Master marine oil painting is by noted Dutch marine artist Abraham Storck. Painted circa 1670 the composition is a number of ships heading out to sea, their sails billowing and banners and flags blowing in the wind. The sea is also choppy and clouds race over head. It is an ambitious, busy nautical scene and Storck has perfectly captured the energy and movement of the ships and smaller vessels. This is an excellent example of a 17th century Dutch Old Master oil painting.
Provenance: Part of a private collection of Flemish & European paintings.

Condition. Oil on canvas, 25 inches by 24 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate 23 carat gilt carved Lely period frame with name plate, 32 inches by 31 inches and in excellent condition.
Abraham Storck (1644-1708) was a Dutch painter, who enjoyed a reputation for his marine paintings, topographical views and Italianate harbour scenes. Storck was also an outstanding draughtsman. Storck was baptized in the Noorderkerk, a Protestant church in the Jordaan. His father was the painter Jan Jansz Sturck (or Johannes Storck) (1603-1673), from Wesel; his mother was Teuntje (Apolonia) Jacobs. The couple married in 1628. Storck had two brothers, who were also painters using the name Sturckenburch until c. 1688 after which they started calling themselves Storck or Sturck. It is likely they were all trained with their father in the family workshop and joined the local Guild of Saint Luke, otherwise it was impossible to sell any painting. Circa 1666 Storck established his workshop producing naval, harbor scenes as well as landscape paintings and city scapes. In 1670 he traveled with his brother Jacob and worked in Germany. In 1694, at age 49, he married the widow Neeltje Pieters van Meyservelt. At the end of his life he lived on Kattenburg near the harbour. Storck's marine and river scenes were influenced by the two Willem van de Veldes (the elder and the younger), Ludolf Bakhuizen...
