A group portrait of the Southwell family with a Negro Page and Macaw
Located in Taunton, GB
A group portrait of the Southwell family on the terrace with a negro page and Macaw. Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1731 Canvas size 25 x 30 ¼ inches 63.5 x 77 cms Frame exterior 32 x 37 ¼ inches 81 x 94.5 cms This evocative family portrait offers a glimpse into the life of 18th Century English nobility. The Southwells are a noble family whose roots go back to the early 17th Century. In 1776 Edward Southwell III was granted the Barony of de Clifford (a title in abeyance at the time), and the line extends to today, with the 28th Baron de Clifford sitting in the House of Lords. Charles Phillips (1708-1747) was a leading portraitist of his time, having painted many noble and royal portraits. Two of his paintings are part of the Royal Collection Trust. In this portrait, signed and dated 1731, we see Edward Southwell Sr (1671-1730) and his family on the grounds of their Estate, Kings Weston House near Bristol. On the far left is Mrs. Helena Le Grand (Edward’s sister). Next to her is Mrs. Southwell (Edward’s second wife, the first having died in 1709). On the right is Edward Southwell Jr (1705-1755), Edward’s son by his first marriage and next to him a “Negro Page” (in the euphemistic words of an old label on the painting; more on him below.) Phillips has arranged the figures in an arc, anchoring the composition. The arc stretches from Mrs. Le Grand’s red dress on the left, through the colourful parrot, onward to the heads of Mr. and Mrs. Southwell, down again to the younger Southwell and finishing on the right with the enslaved boy. As Edward Sr. died in 1730, this must be a posthumous portrait, making it especially poignant. (Presumably Phillips used another portrait to capture his likeness.) One can imagine the late Edward’s family looking affectionately at the portrait, remembering the time spent with him on the grounds of Kings Weston House. Southwell stands between wife and son, eyes directed toward one, hand pointed toward the other, symbolically balancing the needs of both. Devoted husband and father? Perhaps. Slave-owner as well. English noble families of the 18th Century often had financial and practical connections with the slave trade. The Southwells themselves were granted a tract of land by the Crown in 1766, which Edward Southwell III (1738-1777) – the son of the younger Southwell in the portrait – developed with partners into a plantation worked by slave labour. This portrait shows us that slave ownership was not always a matter for distant colonies. This young boy, likely deprived of his freedom from birth (born to enslaved parents), was made to serve the Southwell family in their home. We see him here sitting half cross-legged, wearing a house servant’s uniform and a faint smile. He gaze is turned upward; at first we think is looking at his Master, then we realise he must be in fact enjoying the sight of the parrot eating from the hand of his Master’s sister. Phillips has placed him on the ground, beneath the rest of the family in pose as in station. Yet here he is in this portrait just the same, as if he were a member of the family. Was the family fond of him? Was he a playmate of the younger Southwell? Or was he simply there in the Garden that day to serve them their refreshments? The answers to these questions must remain unanswered, known only to the sitters frozen in time by Phillips’ paintbrush. Three centuries later we are fortunate to have this portrait as a snapshot of 18th Century England, both its nobility and its baseness. Charles Philips, the son of a portraitist, likely acquired his artistic skills from his father. He specialised primarily in painting small portraits and conversation pieces. George Vertue observed that in painting small figure portraits and conversation scenes, Philips gained significant recognition and patronage among fashionable circles, including members of the Royal Family. In 1732, he produced conversation works for the Duchess of Portland and the Duke of Somerset. During the 1730s, his conversation pieces became increasingly complex, featuring more numerous subjects engaged in a greater variety of activities. Following the precedent set by contemporaries such as Philippe Mercier and William Hogarth, both prominent painters of small-scale conversation pieces, Philips transitioned into the more lucrative field of portrait painting later in the decade. His career peaked in 1737 when he painted full-length portraits of the Prince and Princess of Wales. The Prince of Wales was renowned for his patronage of the arts, particularly towards immigrant artists including Jacopo Amigoni and Philippe Mercier, who were principal influences on Philips. Two of Philips' paintings in the Royal Collection depict fashionable London clubs not recorded elsewhere. The first, from 1732, shows Frederick...

Copy of "Portrait of Beatrice dʼEste" by Leonardo da Vinci created 15th Century
Located in New York, NY
A masterful copy by an unknown artist, after the portrait of "Beatrice d'Este" by Leonardo Da Vinci also known as ‘Portrait of a Lady’ or ‘La Dama con la reticella di perle (The Lady With a Pearl Hairnet)’. The original work originally created in the 15th Century is currently on display in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana Museum of Milan. Beatrice d'Este was the Duchess of Bari/Milan and was believed to be one of the most attractive princesses of the Renaissance. Her impeccable style won her many admirers throughout Italy and France, and she became a trendsetter of the highest order. This copy of the original painting, is an oil on canvas done in the 18th Century, and in this exquisite portrait, the artist has masterfully depicted the fine details with draped hair, pearls, royal dress, ornate headgear and sumptuous jewelry in front of a dark background. Once again, capturing the imagination with another enigmatic smile. It comes housed in an elegant period giltwood frame with ebonized trims and ready to be displayed with hanging wire on verso. Art measures 28 x 18 inches Frame measures 34.5 x 24.5 inches There is much debate and controversy over who actually painted the "Beatrice d'Este" was it Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519), or Giovanni Ambrogio de Predis (1455–1508). So we may never know who executed the original portrait which hangs in the museum, but that need not deter from an appreciation of its singularity. Following the portraiture convention established by painters of the Quattrocentro, the artist has chosen to portray his sitter in profile. In doing so, he magnificently captures the essence of his sitter, a girl on the threshold of womanhood. Bedecked in the adornments—silk, velvet, pearls and embroidery (brocade) crafted of spun gold threads—afforded her by birthright and marriage, Beatrice looks forward in noble serenity. And at the same time her profile with its upturned nose and slight smile betrays an innocence that must have been the basis of the oft-repeated epithet: la più zentil donna in Italia” (“the sweetest lady in Italy”). It is believed the lady is Beatrice d'Este (1475-1497), duchess of Bari and later of Milan, the wife of Ludovico Sforza (known as "il Moro"). One of the most beautiful princesses of the Italian Renaissance, she was known for her good taste in fashion. Beatrice was a member of the Este-Sforza family, which joined by marriage two of the oldest reigning and already powerful houses in Italy. The house of Este, which held court in Ferrara, traced its lineage to the 11th century Dukes of Saxony and Bavaria. Beatriceʼs father, Ercole I ruled the Ferrara commune for 34 years, catapulting the city-state (and the Estes with it) to an unmatched level of economic prosperity and cultural prominence. The family was renowned for its love of letters and patronage of the arts. The first time Leonardo da Vinci’s name resounded in the Ambrosiana, it was through the pen of its founder, Cardinal Federico Borromeo, who attributed this little panel to the great Master, describing it as “A portrait of a Duchess of Milan, by the hand of Leonardo”. Following the Cardinal’s statement, the portrait was for long assumed to depict Beatrice d’Este, the wife of Ludovico il Moro. However, scholars have recently been more cautious and vague in their statements, with regard to both the artist (anonymous Lombard or Emilian...

18th century antique portrait Edmund Hoyle Circle of James Latham, Edmund Hoyle
Located in York, GB
18th century Bust portrait of a gentleman in a blue coat with gold buttons (Said to be Edmund Hoyle, inventor of Whist) oil on canvas circle of James Latham. Housed in a gilt frame the size overall is 71 x 84 cm (28 x 33 inches approx) whilst the painting is 56 x 69 cm ( 22 x 27 inches approx) unsigned The overall condition is very good having had some restoration. The painting has been relined, cleaned and re varnished. There has been some strengthening/overpainting. There is a Rectangular patch repair along lower edge, centre, reverse approximately 5 x 7cm with associated retouching to front, all essentially done sympathetically. some fine stable craquelure throughout. Some minor self coloured losses to frame. None of the above detracting from a very attractive portrait. Edmond Hoyle Edmond Hoyle English card game authority, "the Father of whist" Born 1672 England Died 29 August 1769 (aged 96–97) London, England Edmond Hoyle (1672 – 29 August 1769)[1] was a writer best known for his works on the rules and play of card games. The phrase "according to Hoyle" came into the language as a reflection of his generally perceived authority on the subject James Latham James Latham was born in Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland and possibly related to the family of Lathams of Meldrum and Ballysheehan. After some practice of his art, Latham studied for an academic year in Antwerp (1724–25) where he became a Master of the Guild of St Luke. He returned to Dublin by 1725, and may have visited England in the 1740s, as the influence of Joseph Highmore, as well as Charles Jervas and William Hogarth, is evident in his work of this period. Anthony Pasquin memorably dubbed Latham "Ireland's Van Dyck". Latham died in Dublin on 26 January 1747. Several of James Latham's portraits are in the National Gallery of Ireland collection in Dublin; one is of the famous MP Charles Tottenham (1694–1758) of New Ross, Co. Wexford, "Tottenham in his Boots" (Cat. No.411) and a second is a portrait of Bishop...

Young Man with Two Dogs in a Landscape - British Edwardian art oil painting
Located in Hagley, England
This superb British Edwardian figurative landscape oil painting is by noted animal artist Edwin Noble. Painted in 1904 it is a large and detailed painting of a young man, kneeling in a grassy thicket with his two dogs, a lurcher and terrier. He is restraining the dogs whilst his ferret goes down a rabbit hole in the hedgerow. Two dead rabbits are already lying on the grass beside them. Beyond is a county landscape of fields and trees. The young man in his stripped shirt and waistcoat and the two white dogs really stand out in the mass of greenery around them as do the white wild flowers at their feet. The detail and brushwork are superb. This is an excellent example of Edwin Noble's work as an animal painter in the Edwardian period and also depicts country pursuits. Signed and dated Edwin Noble 04 lower right. Provenance. From the collection of Derek Parker and Peter Wynne Morris, Interior designers, antique dealers and collectors over sixty years. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 50 inches by 40 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a complementary frame, 54 inches by 44 inches and in good condition. John Edwin Noble (1876-1961). Maurice Milliere (1871-1946) An artist in his studio, oil on canvas signed
Located in Paris, FR
Maurice Milliere (1871-1946) An artist in his studio, signed lower right oil on canvas 46 x 27 cm framed : 52 x 33 cm It is particularly interesting to find Maurice Millière working in a genre very different from that for which he is best known: depictions of young Parisian women. This unique portrait shows Millière in a more original and intriguing light. It captures a painter in his studio, creating a scene with various details: canvases on the floor to the right, a stretcher frame on trestles and even shoes that must have been quite striking at the time. The painter appears to be taking a break to smoke and pose for Millière. There is a real sense of complicity between the two artists. At the same time, however, everything in this painting is carefully chosen and composed, such as the admirable red background against which the model stands out. Combining elements of both a portrait and a studio scene, the painter's intention was to create a unique piece that pays homage to the bond between the two artists. Maurice Georges Louis Millière was born in Le Havre in 187. He came from a working-class family in Le Havre; his father was a salesman for a merchant. Millière began by studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre. He moved to Paris in 1889 and enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs, also attending certain workshops at the École des Beaux-Arts. His first notable graphic works were posters and sheet music for companies such as Le Boulch and Le Divan Japonais (1899). From 1917 onwards, he published large numbers of depictions of scantily clad women: first in Fantasio (1917), then in Bagatelles, La Vie parisienne, Le Frou-frou, Le Sourire, Le Gai-Paris, etc. At the end of 1920, he joined the République de Montmartre, a charitable association. Contemporary with those of Louis Icart, his “little women” were to enjoy great success outside France: during the 1920s, American periodicals reprinted his creations, as well as those of Suzanne Meunier and Georges Léonnec...

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Description: This evocative watercolor by Jack Grunwell captures the Chapel of the Three Kings of Cologne, a hidden architectural gem nestled along the famous Christmas Steps in Bristol. This historic 16th-century chapel, built over an archway at the foot of Foster’s Almshouses, is renowned for its elegant Gothic window and unique placement over a medieval passageway. Grunwell’s composition brings Bristol’s rich history to life, portraying the winding pathway leading towards the chapel with figures in period attire, evoking a scene from centuries past. The muted color palette and subtle contrast between light and shadow highlight the chapel’s delicate tracery and surrounding historic buildings, adding depth and realism to the scene. The Christmas Steps, dating back to the 1600s, remains one of Bristol’s most atmospheric streets, lined with historic buildings and steeped in medieval charm. The painting beautifully conveys the timeless nature of this landmark, making it an ideal piece for collectors of historic British architecture and lovers of Bristol’s heritage. Madonna Scarsella Paint Oil on canvas Old master 16/17th Century Raffaello Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Ippolito Scarsella, known as Lo Scarsellino (Ferrara, around 1550 - 1620) workshop Altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child, St. James the Greater and the donor in armour Technique: oil on panel Measurements: 93 x 72 cm./with frame 109 x 86 cm. Provenance: Prato, Farsetti, auction of 28.10.2016, lot 261 (link) A majestic Madonna in Glory occupies the upper register of the canvas, seated on a blanket of iridescent clouds surrounded by angels, flanked by a cherub who scatters flowers contained in a cornucopia towards the infant Christ as a sign of abundance, naked and supported with both hands from the mother. In the lower part of the composition stands the figure of San Giacomo Maggiore, one of the twelve apostles, standing on the right side of the altarpiece, represented dressed in a humble tunic; one arm holds the open Gospel book, while the other holds a cross pilgrimage staff. A particular aspect of the table is the presence in the central part, to indicate its importance, of the figure of the donor, kneeling on a cushion, with his hands joined in prayer and his face observing the Virgin in an attitude of devotion, while on the opposite lectern is placed a prayer book; depicted with the features of a young leader in armor, with a sword and a rich iridescent red cloak, elements which, combined with his authoritarian composure, enhance his ennoblement. Unlike the medieval altarpieces, the knight is here included in the space of the painting and has proportionate dimensions to those of the other characters, returning to all intents and purposes in the sacred scene, with a pose that cannot but evoke the detail of the 'Montefeltro altarpiece' made by Piero della Francesca for Federico da Montefeltro, kneeling in front of the sacred group in the guise of a leader. On the right, the view recedes into depth highlighting the background of an urban landscape set on a hill behind which a mountain range stands out, with the peculiarity of the arched aqueduct that runs along the entire landscape. Presumably among these expanses were the donor's own possessions and his hometown. It is a quality table, imbued with the late Mannerist style still resistant in the second half of the 16th century, characterized by a 'sweet and affable religiosity, rendered through a manner of studied simplicity and grace', which highlights the unmistakable stylistic and chromatic connotations of the produced...

Annunciation Bonini Paint Oil in canvas Old master 17th Century Leonardo Italy
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Girolamo Bonini, called Anconitano (Ancona, circa 1600 - Bologna 1680) Annunciation (or Madonna of the Beautiful Angel) Oil on canvas (115 x 91 cm. - Framed 134 x 108 cm.) Work accompanied by the expertise of Prof. Emilio Negro The work, undoubtedly commissioned as an object of private devotion, shows the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary, a Gospel episode here set on the two figures portrayed in the foreground, the Archangel Gabriel with outstretched wings, a portrait of supernatural beauty, and the Virgin; We see her here absorbed in reading a prayer book with her eyes turned humbly downwards as a sign of devotion, while a small cherub hands her white lilies, a symbol of purity and chastity.   In the upper part of the composition is the austere image of God the Father, with the dove radiating with light, emblem of the Holy Spirit, surrounded by a flock of angels fluttering in the clouds charged with intense glow and play of light, in full Baroque style. It should also be noted that the image of the Saviour's mother in a delicately pious attitude, with her yellow veil, her broad blue mantle and her usual modest red dress from which the edges of her white blouse protrude, is to be interpreted as a kind of tender allegory of sacred love. The painting in question is an interesting replica with variants of the composition commissioned from Francesco Albani for the Fioravanti chapel in the ancient church...
