"From the outside, The Longhorn Saloon looks like a bar where the most ancient of vices are catered for daily. It has the whiff of a place where cowboys are tough, women are tougher and there is little rule of law. It is the Wild West at its cartoonish best. The Coen Brothers should check it out.
The Longhorn is clearly a Texas bar and we would say that it’s in West Texas, but more than that, we are sworn to secrecy. It’s too good a place to get crowded and besides, the cattle clearly need some room to roam.
Projects like these tend to be fun for everyone involved and when we do film at dusk, there is never a doubt that after the wrap, some local cast or crew will invite us home for a Texan Barbecue. They score very high in hospitality in Texas and we love our nights out near the Mexican Border...

The new series “Punctured Ink” incorporates works from Nyari’s ongoing, portrait project titled “Ink Stories”.
“Ink Stories”, which was introduced at Nyari’s very first solo gallery exhibit, consists of large-scale nude photographs that explore the concept of self-identity and female empowerment. The series joins six women together, each who have faced adversity, to demonstrate the creation of a strengthened self-image through tattoos. By highlighting the intricate woven threads of ink on each woman’s skin, Nyari proposes the idea that self-empowerment and reconciliation with one’s traumas can be linked to the act of greeting one’s “own skin” or inventing their own story.
Nyari has now elevated these intimate photographs in her new Punctured Ink series through the process of puncturing botanical-like references into the surface of each image (thus making each one of a kind). Her inspiration to physically puncture the previously pristine photographic prints stemmed from a childhood memory that occurred while she was living in Finland: “I remembered my parents had this big pad of paper next to the home phone in Finland and I would use my mother’s sewing needles to poke patterns into the paper”.
This nostalgic memory in combination with the longing to apply her physical, painterly abilities resulted in the choice to transform these photographs via puncturing the paper. Unlike painting or drawing on the surface of each print, the raised, brail like holes created leave a permanent result, just as a tattoo does on one’s skin. While the surface of an artwork, like skin, is typically preserved and or avoided, Nyari follows in the subject’s footsteps by purposely destroying the pristine surface in order to create a new narrative. The act taps into a long history of tribal scarification which signified a right of passage, permitting the individual to transcend their past traumas and transforming their evolved selves. This notion grounds all of her works.
In addition, Nyari’s choice to puncture nature-based patterns into each portrait also has its own significance. She stated that when “talking about scarification and getting over trauma, to me, nature is one of the most healing and beautiful elements.”
As Nyari is emphasizing through her photographs, when you add a personal story onto the skin, it is a whole new layer that often becomes biographical. It translates a story to the audience of one’s past, future and wishes. While this concept existed in her previous photographic series, now, through puncturing the surface of each, Nyari is adding another layer of permanence onto her works’ meaning, therefore becoming, as she calls it “ink cubed”.

“I have photographed Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda with varying success over the last ten years - I think our hit rate is around 20% - meaning only one out of every five treks up Volcanoes National Park has yielded anything. I think that’s about right - it’s not easy at 10,000 feet in the rainforest, and the best of my work now hangs in the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Fund in Kinigi, Rwanda. I am glad they don’t display my average pictures, of which there are many.
I recently had the chance to work on a fundraiser with another great American conservationist - Ramona Bass - a legendary figure in Fort Worth - who has offered a sanctuary for displaced Western Lowland Gorillas for many years. The male adult Lowland gorillas have less hair than mountain gorillas and, as a result, look more human. The most famous of these under Ramona’s care is a 33-year-old silverback called Elmo, who can be photographed from a distance at certain times of the day.

What makes the Cresta Club in St Moritz unique is not the racetrack, or the setting, but its members. I knew from the moment that I undertook this project, that a single photograph would fail if I didn’t convey, not just a sense of place, or the sport itself, but a sense of “Club”.
The Cresta Club, officially known as the St Moritz Tobogganing Club, has been in existence since 1887 and remains one of St Moritz’s most exclusive institutions - and there are quite a few. It has a very British stamp to it and there is a sense of being at an old boys reunion at Harrow, but it welcomes all nations and all characters. For what could be a rather stuffy golf club culture, it is defined by its lack of stuffiness. It is a Club where people have fun and refuse to grow up and surely that should always be applauded.

What makes the Cresta Club in St Moritz unique is not the racetrack, or the setting, but its members. I knew from the moment that I undertook this project, that a single photograph would fail if I didn’t convey, not just a sense of place, or the sport itself, but a sense of “Club”.
The Cresta Club, officially known as the St Moritz Tobogganing Club, has been in existence since 1887 and remains one of St Moritz’s most exclusive institutions - and there are quite a few. It has a very British stamp to it and there is a sense of being at an old boys reunion at Harrow, but it welcomes all nations and all characters. For what could be a rather stuffy golf club culture, it is defined by its lack of stuffiness. It is a Club where people have fun and refuse to grow up and surely that should always be applauded.

In the mountains of America, my experience is that the really cold conditions tend to be on cloudless days first thing in the morning, particularly at sunrise when the temperature briefly dips. Operating when it is frigid is a real examination, not just of one’s hunger to get the shot but one’s fluency with the camera. Hand warmers are such a wonderful invention.
This morning, up on the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railroad, was one such occasion. The storm had cleared and was replaced
by a cloudless sky and frigid temperatures. At sunrise we were down to around -15°F or -26°C and these conditions offered so much potential for the filmmaker as everything froze - from human beards and human breath to horse breath.
I am always nervous of boring people and anything in a picture that defies gravity tends to work for me as it adds energy and dynamism. The props I had that morning gave every chance to fully embrace this modus operandi - especially if my camera was pointed directly either side of the rising sun.
My cowboy - who is a dead ringer for Rip from the Yellowstone Series - is a charming Texan called Cole Nallion rather than Cole Hauser who plays Rip Wheeler. Cole worked as a cowboy extra and handler in another Taylor Sheridan series - 1883 - and it is easy to see why he and Sam Elliott got along.
This one split second image caught my notice straight away as there is an anonymity to his face. We don’t need to see his eyes, because this is not a story about him per se, it is a story about the loosely governed wild west, where cowboys like him often made a living from doing shady things. He is playing to a genre before he is playing himself.

"I just can’t bring myself to drift from my default position of wanting wild west saloon images to be long of menace. I see no reason to introduce a mood of levity and laughter as these were bad ass days in loosely governed frontier towns marooned in the middle of nowhere. With alcohol and women came danger, perhaps it was always so. Of course, I am being postmodern and playful with the composed close ups; almost to the point of being cartoonish. But why dumb things down when we are simply telling stories.

Many years ago, the exceptional work of British photographer Tim Flach, drew my attention to the hot springs of Myvatn in the north of Iceland. This remote area is geologically angry and in deep winter it is fairly inhospitable, but in the summer, it becomes something of a tourist resort for the local Icelandics and all too crowded for how we operate. We would always choose inhospitable over crowded.
I have filmed here in the winter in the past, but struggled to do justice to the uniquely raw ecosystem. As always there is an element of knowing how to get it right by initially getting it hopelessly wrong. In particular, this is not a safe place without engaging locals, because the ground underneath, much like Yellowstone in Wyoming, is not to be taken for granted. To be brave and work close to the geysers needs permits and guides.
But in 2022, we finally had our rewards. The weather plays such a big role in the field; no more so than up here at 66 degrees north where the Norse Gods granted my wish for strong winds and good light. It was the wind that amplified the trail of steam and allowed me to work a comfortable distance from the source without losing the effect. It was then up to me to work the strong late afternoon light to the best of my advantage.
The end result is a strong image and certainly authentic. Its stripped back and visceral mood lives and breathes the wildest of Icelandic sagas. There are horse...

"I have had the idea of this image in my mind for a couple of years. Looking through stills of John Ford’s iconic film, Stagecoach, there was one image from the filming in 1939 that popped up on my screen time and time again - the stagecoach moving right to left with the unmistakable monoliths of Monument Valley in the background. There is no indication as to whether John Wayne was inside the stagecoach, but that mattered little, this was the perfect visual in what many have described as the perfect western.
The location of the old still from Stagecoach is on private land right on the Arizona/Utah border not far from the Monument Valley visitor centre and my production team secured permission to film there.
It struck me, given the direction of travel was westerly, if we used a wagon as opposed to a stagecoach, we could use the first rays of light to dramatic effect as they diffract through the foreground content. The trick would then be to find a dip in the terrain which would allow for the monolith to pop out above the wagon and horses...
