Johm Stryker was born in Rockford, Illinois, September 1, 1883. He is most remembered for his body of photographs he took of the "Olympic of Western sport"*- the Rodeo. During his lifetime he crossed America, working rodeos as an announcer, a producer, promoter and sometimes a rider. He invented the chute that the animals come out of and he developed new ways of photographing action during an event.
Dramatic shots were taken from the ground, propping his camera on the toe of his right boot right next to a bucking bronco.
Some historians believe that John Stryker was directly responsible for the growth and sophistication of the sport.
His negatives are in the collection of the University of Texas at Permian Basin, Odessa. His photographs have been exhibited during his lifetime at the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming, and the Amon Carter Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. During a career that spanned five decades, he provoked, entertained and informed the American people. His photographs ranged from a hometown baseball game to the drama of war, from struggling rural farmers to US Presidents. Rothstein was born in Manhattan, New York City, and he grew up in the Bronx. He was a graduate of Columbia University, where he was a founder of the University Camera Club and photography editor of the Columbian. Following his graduation from Columbia during the Great Depression, Rothstein was invited to Washington DC by one of his professors at Columbia, Roy Stryker. Rothstein had been Stryker's student at Columbia University in the early 1930s.
Stryker hired Rothstein to set up the darkroom for Stryker's Photo Unit of the Historical Section of the Resettlement Administration (RA).

300 Lancaster II aeroplanes were made, fitted with Bristol Hercules radial engines, as there was a worry that there would be a shortage of Merlin engines, reserved for the Spitfire and Hurricane.
Lily Mars was named after the 1943 American musical starring Judy Garland and was based at RAF Waterbeach, in Cambridgeshire. A podcast gives details of the final flight on 13 June 1944 which was to be the final raid of the crew’s tour. The bombing raid was of 303 Lancasters against the Nordstern synthetic oil plant at Gelsenkichen in the Ruhr, deep inside Germany and the aircraft took off at 23.12 hrs. On the home run LL678 was intercepted and shot down by a night fighter capitained by Oberleutnant Schmidt in a Bf 110 at 01.24 hrs at Zuidloo, a small hamlet, where five of the eight crew are buried; the other three crew members baled out and escaped.
