ABOUT THIS PIECE: "I wanted to photograph the pools to show the beauty of the architecture, while minimizing the modern elements. I love the geometry of the tiles, the lines on the bottom of the pool and the typography of the signs. Since my first Poolside exhibition in 2018, I have travelled to London, Paris, Manchester and Glasgow to add to my collection. Focusing on composition, carefully using blocks of colour to show interesting shape and proportion. The eye is drawn to the architecture, then the symmetry and reflections, and finally to the models, which feels more intimate.‘ Although my first collections were heavily inspired by my love of Wes Anderson's work, I’ve also been looking to other cinematic imagery from directors like Terrence Malick and Stanley Kubrick, while still keeping my signature style.’ We are so lucky to still have these beautiful old pools and maybe the photographs will remind people how lovely they are." - Soo Burnell

American photographer Victoria Cohen exclusively photographed the hotel’s original interior before it’s closure for a redesign and complete renovation. Cohen’s photographic journey through this mesmerizing and extraordinary place, that possessed not only the contents of an era gone by but a palpable feeling of being transported to a time and place of this Bohemian Mecca. The result of which produced these evocative and ambitious collection of fine art tableaus. For three weeks everyday Cohen was not only photographing the rooms and halls, but experiencing a feeling of overwhelmed emotion walking the in the spaces that had been inhabited by legendary figures of the arts and culture such as Patti Smith, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jimi Hendrix, Leonard Cohen, Dylan Thomas, Andy Warhol and so many more that called these rooms home throughout its storied history. Uniquely, Cohen, with the personal insight and exceptional vision to see the extraordinary, was able to transcend the concept of an interior space as an environment filled with inanimate objects, and redefine the subject matter into individual portraits that evoke a feeling of intimacy. This prominent body of work casts the historic landmark through the lens of the twenty-first century, exhibiting it as it has never been seen before, and will never be seen again. “For the first time... I had been refused when offering chloroform... later I asked her why... shyly she turned from thw window that burst the first light of dawn and said: ‘It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t meant to, was it, doctor?’" A chance phrase by a woman in a hovel in Whitechapel in 1911, that childbirth wasn’t meant to be painful, led the young Dr Grantly Dick-Read to explore that in the absence of fear, the body's natural endorphins can replace the stress hormones that cause pain in childbirth. He went on to write the most influential book on childbirth of the last century, 'Childbirth Without Fear' in 1942, with the passage describing the encounter becoming famously enshrined in birth philosophy. “The window was broken, rain pouring in, the bed had no proper covering… the room was lit by one candle stuck in the top of a beer bottle on the mantelshelf, my patient covered in sacks… a neighbour had brought in a jug of water and a basin”. Dick-Read’s cinematic account for the first time is here visualised, re-enacted at Dennis Severs’ House, a ‘living museum’ of Victorian London.
