Jill Furmanovsky body of work exudes at its heart her love of music and unique ability to capture its vibrancy and spirit throughout her career. Her intimate and candid shots of Oasis reflect her close relationship with the band during their zenith.
Rockarchive founder, Jill Furmanovsky, was born and brought up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Her parents moved to London in 1965 when she was eleven. As a teenager, she became a Beatles fan and often stood outside Abbey Road Studio hoping to catch sight of them. Her first rock shot was of Paul McCartney and two school friends taken on a Kodak Instamatic outside of his home in St. John’s Wood.
Jill studied textile and then graphic design at the Central School of Art and Design in London. In January 1972, whilst on a two-week block course in photography, she had a lucky break when she was offered a job as in-house photographer for premier rock venue, The Rainbow Theatre. From then on, she took live shots and features for the music press of the day of the 1970’s and 80’s, including NME, Melody Maker, Sounds, Smash Hits and The Face. In the 1990s Jill became the main photographer for Oasis.

ABOUT THIS PIECE: "I wanted to photograph the pools to show the beauty of the architecture, while minimizing the modern elements. I love the geometry of the tiles, the lines on the bottom of the pool and the typography of the signs. Since my first Poolside exhibition in 2018, I have travelled to London, Paris, Manchester and Glasgow to add to my collection. Focusing on composition, carefully using blocks of colour to show interesting shape and proportion. The eye is drawn to the architecture, then the symmetry and reflections, and finally to the models, which feels more intimate.‘ Although my first collections were heavily inspired by my love of Wes Anderson's work, I’ve also been looking to other cinematic imagery from directors like Terrence Malick and Stanley Kubrick, while still keeping my signature style.’ We are so lucky to still have these beautiful old pools and maybe the photographs will remind people how lovely they are." - Soo Burnell

"The Whitechapel Woman" is part of international artist, Natalie Lennard's series Birth Undisturbed.
“For the first time... I had been refused when offering chloroform... later I asked her why... shyly she turned from thw window that burst the first light of dawn and said: ‘It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t meant to, was it, doctor?’" A chance phrase by a woman in a hovel in Whitechapel in 1911, that childbirth wasn’t meant to be painful, led the young Dr Grantly Dick-Read to explore that in the absence of fear, the body's natural endorphins can replace the stress hormones that cause pain in childbirth. He went on to write the most influential book on childbirth of the last century, 'Childbirth Without Fear' in 1942, with the passage describing the encounter becoming famously enshrined in birth philosophy. “The window was broken, rain pouring in, the bed had no proper covering… the room was lit by one candle stuck in the top of a beer bottle on the mantelshelf, my patient covered in sacks… a neighbour had brought in a jug of water and a basin”. Dick-Read’s cinematic account for the first time is here visualised, re-enacted at Dennis Severs’ House, a ‘living museum’ of Victorian London. ABOUT THIS PIECE: "I wanted to photograph the pools to show the beauty of the architecture, while minimizing the modern elements. I love the geometry of the tiles, the lines on the bottom of the pool and the typography of the signs. Since my first Poolside exhibition in 2018, I have travelled to London, Paris, Manchester and Glasgow to add to my collection. Focusing on composition, carefully using blocks of colour to show interesting shape and proportion. The eye is drawn to the architecture, then the symmetry and reflections, and finally to the models, which feels more intimate.‘ Although my first collections were heavily inspired by my love of Wes Anderson's work, I’ve also been looking to other cinematic imagery from directors like Terrence Malick and Stanley Kubrick, while still keeping my signature style.’ We are so lucky to still have these beautiful old pools and maybe the photographs will remind people how lovely they are." - Soo Burnell
ABOUT THIS ARTIST: Growing up surrounded by Edinburgh's historic beauty, it would be hard for any photographer not be inspired by its incredible buildings. However, it was the Victorian swimming pools of her childhood that really spoke to photographer Soo Burnell, and allowed her to apply her personal style and aesthetic to shoot these iconic buildings. Taking inspiration across many art forms, from architects, artists and filmmakers, Soo’s stylised shots are reminiscent of frames from a Wes Anderson film...
