The photograph titled "You Are Here" by Anne Valverde exhibits a minimalistic seascape where the vastness of the sea meets the expansive sky. The crisp horizon line divides the image into two broad swaths of muted color, imparting a sense of calm and infinity. The foreground is a textured white that looks almost like a continuation of the sea's surface, adding depth and grounding the photograph in a tangible reality.
Against this serene backdrop, the phrase "You Are Here" is superimposed in a style reminiscent of neon signage. The contrast of the modern, human-made font with the natural setting plays on the idea of place and presence. It serves both as a marker of physical location and a philosophical statement about being present in the moment, offering a dual commentary on geography and consciousness.
The artwork’s essence lies in its call for contemplation. In a world often dominated by haste and distraction, Valverde’s work is a gentle prompt to acknowledge and savor the present. The text acts as an anchor, pulling the viewer back from wherever their mind might wander, back to the 'here' that is not just a point in space, but a moment in time.
The composition and the inclusion of the text work together to evoke a reflection on solitude and connectivity. In the absence of any human figures or traces of civilization other than the text, the image suggests isolation, yet the words imply a connection to the viewer. It is this paradox that enriches the photograph, encouraging a deeper engagement with the layers of meaning behind the simplicity of the captured scene.
Since 2015, Valverde has been working on a neon light installation project in several countries, which she materialises through photography. The DREAM ART PROJECT
Her portfolio “City Icons” in 2008 brought her work to public attention. A series about Iconic Monuments from Major cities like Paris, New York, Hong Kong, London, Dubaï… Writing with Neon brings together two passions for Anne Valverde: light and words thus incorporating her main medium of expression: Photography.
Valverde brings artificial light to areas where electricity is absent, creating a dissonance in the landscape and an unexpected and dreamlike light, creating a new message, independent from preexisting signs and words.
Valverde’s first message is "dream", as she invites the viewer to go past reality and reflect on open spaces for escape in a complex and tormented world.
Some themes are recurring: an amused gaze on social media omnipresence, hyper-connectivity or even office language shortcuts. This contemplation of the natural landscape suddenly opens up to a perspective on social evolution. By inserting neon lights in her photographs, she initiates a return...
