Calculus - Color Viscosity Etching
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988 ) Title: Calculus Date: 1971 Medium: Etching and soft-ground etching Image Size: 23.5 x 19 inches Sheet size: 30 x 22 inches – BFK Rives paper Signature: signed, dated lower right Publisher: La Tortue Gallery, Santa Monica, CA Printer: Hector Saunier Catalogue Raisonne: B&M 353 Edition: 100 plus 5 artist’s proofs. This one: 57/100 This exceptional color viscosity etching is an excellent example of Stanley William Hayter’s iconic printmaking. He is the founder of Atelier 17, and as such, one of the most influential printmakers of the 20th century. Viscosity printing is a multi-color printmaking technique that incorporates principles of relief printing and intaglio printing. It was pioneered by Stanley William Hayter. This is an absolutely beautiful print; it is an exceptional composition with rich, saturated colors. The print is titled “Calculus”. It was published in 1971, and is B&M 353 in the catalog raisonne. The print has full margins and is in very good condition, never framed. There is a bit of slight rippling on the upper and lower edges, barely visible. Please see photographs. Stanley William Hayter CBE (27 December 1901 – 4 May 1988) was an English painter and printmaker associated in the 1930s with surrealism and from 1940 onward with abstract expressionism. Regarded as one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th century, in 1927 Hayter founded the legendary Atelier 17 studio in Paris. Since his death in 1988, it has been known as Atelier Contrepoint. Among the artists who frequented the atelier were Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Nemesio Antúnez...

"Bramble, " Limited Edition Giclee Print, 30" x 30"
Located in Westport, CT
This abstract limited edition print by Elwood Howell features a cool, unique palette. Shapes that resemble thick foliage form a loose horizon line, with deep blue, violet, green, and specks of pink forming the bottom area of the piece. Above is a muted color that transitions out toward the edges to form the aesthetic of a glowing blue sky. An edition of 100, the limited edition giclee it is printed on canvas, and framed in a warm silver floater frame ready to hang. Limited Edition prints are printed with pigment ink on a Premium Fine Art Matte Canvas and designed to meet museum longevity requirements and ensure consistency. The artist's signature and edition number will be added to the giclee electronically when created. Each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity containing all information and retail price. Also, this framed giclee ships for free. Other floater frame options are available in silver, black, gold, and walnut. For additional sizes and alternate frame options or rolled, please contact us. Artist Statement and CV: Of his work, artist Elwood Howell says, "The greater body of my work is primary landscapes and seascapes of an imaginary nature created in the studio. Most works have a generally high horizon as a focal point to lure ones eye into the simple composition. The large area below the horizon down to the base of the canvas gives the viewer's eye freedom to roam the surface. This space gives the painting life much as soil nourishes the very roots of a tree. The imagery at the horizon gives a focal point and the expanse above serves as atmosphere to set the mood. This has been a format I have used for over forty years and it still intrigues me. In the process of correlating the colors, values and markings, with the fore mentioned ink, paint, charcoal, pencil and even by sanding, a visual conversation begins between the painting and the painter. Thus, by adjusting again and again, from hints given by previously applied paint, sometimes even an abrupt and complete change over the earlier endeavors is commanded. The discourse will probably continue forward, just as communications sometimes do with people, for new thoughts can hoover about and over time a need is created for further deliberation. Thus some "completed" works have required changes years later. Sometimes discussions, of whatever nature, never seem to be finished. When painting is viewed down the road, by another person, maybe they, too, will encounter a visual voice, which probably will be of a totally different nature than has been envisioned. However, and hopefully, at that time some connection will take root and a soul will be nourished.” Awards • Honorable Mention, Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY (2003) • Best Abstract, Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY (1982) • David G. Future III: modernist urban architectural monoprint collage in gray blue black
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"Future III" is a Bauhaus-inspired monotype and collage (work on paper) reminiscent of the aesthetic of Le Corbusier. It is part of Bouton’s "Habitat and Urban Matter" series, which is inspired by the straight lines of modernist architecture and hard-edged geometrical forms of the urban environment. Bouton, a French printmaker from Paris who has also lived in London, Myanmar, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Turkey, creates work that responds to her experiences during her travels and the cultures she encountered. Since settling in the Philadelphia area, she has been inspired by the urbanism of the city, whether a sleek, new apartment block, an abandoned warehouse, or a half-demolished home. Her latest works are interpretations of these buildings, with both broad street views and focused details from single structures –- the pattern of the skyline, a patchwork of broken windows, an industrial color palette. She is drawn to the history of the spaces and lives lived within these buildings, as well as their intrinsic beauty of the structures, whether that beauty emerges from design or degradation, or some combination of the two. Signed and dated. Bouton is a French artist living and working in the Philadelphia area whose boundary-pushing printmaking and paper works exhibit influence from living and working in international cities across the globe. Bouton earned her BFA in Painting and Printmaking and her MFA in Arts and Textile Design from the prestigious ESSAA Duperré in Paris, France. Since leaving Paris 15 years ago, Bouton has lived and exhibited her work internationally in Paris (France), London (UK), Philadelphia (USA), Rangoon (Burma/Myanmar), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Dakar (Senegal) and Istanbul (Turkey). She has presented solo exhibitions at the Biennale de l’Art Africain...

Here We Are In Croydon by Howard Hodgkin, Lithography with Hand Colouring, 1979
Located in Kingsclere, GB
Here We Are In Croydon by Howard Hodgkin, 1979 Additional information: Medium: lithograph with hand-colouring on Moulin d'Auvergne handmade paper, the full sheet printed to the edges 56 x 76 cm 22 1/8 x 29 7/8 in signed, dated and numbered 30/100 in blue crayon Hodgkin was born in London and grew up in Hammersmith Terrace. During World War II he was evacuated to Long Island, New York, for three years. In the Museum of Modern Art, New York, he saw works by School of Paris artists such as Henri Matisse, Édouard Vuillard, and Pierre Bonnard, which he could not easily have seen then in London or Paris. Back in England in 1943, Hodgkin ran away from Eton College and Bryanston School, convinced that education would impede his progress as an artist, though he encountered inspiring teachers at both schools. He then attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (1949–50) and Bath Academy of Art, Corsham (1950–54). Hodgkin never belonged to a school or group. While many of his contemporaries were drawn to Pop or the School of London, he remained independent, initially marking his outsider status with a series of portraits of contemporary artists and their families. His first solo exhibition was at Arthur Tooth and Sons in London in 1962. Two years later he first visited India, following his interest in Indian miniatures, which began during his time at Eton. Collecting Indian art would remain a lifelong passion, which he initially supported by dealing in picture frames. In 1984 Hodgkin represented Britain at the Biennale di Venezia. His exhibition Forty Paintings reopened the Whitechapel Gallery, London, in 1985, and he won the Turner Prize the same year. In 1995–96 Hodgkin had an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which travelled to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf; and Hayward Gallery, London. His first full retrospective opened at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, in 2006 and traveled to Tate Britain, London, and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid. In the autumn of 2016 Hodgkin visited India for what was to be the last time, completing six new paintings before his return to London. These works were shown at England’s Hepworth Wakefield in 2017, in Painting India, a show that focused on the artist’s long-standing relationship with the Indian subcontinent. Starting in the 1950s, Hodgkin maintained a parallel printmaking practice, translating his visual language into works on paper. Exploring the interactions of color and space on a grander scale, he produced theatrical set designs for Ballet Rambert, the Royal Ballet, and the Mark Morris Dance Group. His black stone and white marble mural...
